Well, just heard that the foreign delegates are very satisfied with the services provided, and believe that the games would be a success.

So, I think that the whole issue is being over hyped by the media which they do more than often..I also think that there is nothing to worry about, and these games are going to be a success.

Media ka hulla gulla over massive corruption and shoddy work done at CWG village -> Aam janta outraged -> GoI swings into action -> CWG villages transformed overnight -> Foreign delegates happy

And it is not as if suddenly media woke up, I get Hindustan Times newspaper at home and I remember reading news stories months and months ago on how the work was progressing at snail's pace. Agar media hulla nahi karti to achanak se yeh sab nahi hota.

Ya I also agree that all went wrong at the beginning and that is surely our government's fault but now I think the delegates are happy and they are satisfied with everything so now we could atleast stop blaming them instead we could support them. Cause blaming is not the only way, I hated the way media is still insulting India that in a bad way. Take the matter of five star hotels helping. So what we are taking help of top five star hotels, this is not a big deal, they are also Indians so they could help in CWG, this should not be represented in such a insulting way in media. But what will happen by blaming media, they will always remain the same, adding spice to all the matters. So atlast I would say that CWG should get over as soon as possible as it has created a mess for the country, a big shame for us, but atleast we could stop blaming anyone and let it go peacefully. 😊

So Kalmadi (IOA) + Sheila Dixit (Delhi Govt) + Gill (Sports Ministry) + Jaipal Reddy + Others do not finish work in time & there is MASSIVE & blatant corruption in the deals. That is not insulting for India but media exposes it and it is shame for India.

WAH bhai WAH!

If they had finished the work in time and without any shady work and deals that would have made every Indian proud. Have you looked at the prices of various items procured for CWG, 10-15 times at the market price. PRIME MINISTER of INDIA had to finally intervene to make things happen, is that something to be proud? Where else would a PM intervene because the games rooms were not cleaned.

I know about it, lol. It's true that the media has played an important role here, but it's also true that they ARE over hyping some stuff.

But now, after everything is done, they are STILL looking at the negative aspects. Now, even the foreign delegates have said that they are pretty satisfied (The media itself reported this), and now they are again condemning the games. When foreign delegates are satisfied, and believe that the games would be a success, then we should at least a tiny bit of belief on the government also, right?

Media did NOT insult India. It was good they got it out..Media being a powerful force at least helped the situations. Govt. woke up and took notice..Media pressure got to them. True, some pictures were posted which lead us to losing some pride, etc..N some things also happened which contributed to it, but then, if the media wouldn't have done all those, how do you think the situation would have been?

What I hate is, when foreigners are showing faith, our media should also show some. They're INDIAN after all. I don't justify what they're doing now, but what they did before was absolutely right.

CWG has brought out the image of the real India..Majority of the Indians live in that kind of a mess 365 days...That's how it is. And out-of-order lifts, defective ACs, snakes, etc are so common. Come across them everywhere..

Nothing wrong in calling out GOI for its inefficiencies and botches. Thats what we need, someone to call out mistakes when people make them, so that we can fix them too.

Latest Washington Post article on the CWG

On eve of Commonwealth Games, India's persistent red tape is in spotlight

Washington Post Foreign Service
Thursday, September 30, 2010; 12:28 PM

NEW DELHI - It didn't take long for the first athletes arriving in New Delhi last week for the upcoming Commonwealth Games to catch a glimpse of modern India's two faces.

Their gateway to the country was the capital's gleaming new international airport terminal, built by a privately led consortium and opened in June four months ahead of schedule.

But the official wristbands that the visitors were handed at the airport turned out to be an emblem of India's famous red tape and government inefficiency. When the teams reached the athletes' village, the police guarding the facility refused to recognize the IDs, saying that the Games Organizing Committee had not sent the required authorization order.

The jet-lagged athletes stood about under a tree for hours with their luggage, calling their embassies for help, and the problem was not finally resolved for four more days.

To observers, the incident illustrated more than just the well-documented sloppiness that has marked India's preparations for the Games. It also underscored the gap that has emerged between a government rooted in a slower-moving, socialist era and a private entrepreneurial class that is busy building global IT companies, the world's largest oil refineries and spectacular structures such as that $2.8 billion airport terminal.

"It is about two aspects of the India story," said Rajeev Chandrasekhar, an entrepreneur and member of Parliament. "India's private sector has been exposed to competition and therefore has developed capability. Accountability is firmly built into the entrepreneurial mind-set. But the government structure is a relic of the colonial past and continues to plod along."

While the airport terminal opened early despite delays caused by village protests and litigation over land acquisition, the government has struggled for seven years to prepare for the Games. It had hoped the event would showcase India's rising might. Instead, on the eve of the opening ceremony Sunday, setbacks such as unhygienic accommodations and collapsing structures have triggered accusations of corruption and ineptitude.

For a bureaucracy known for delays, dithering and lack of accountability, the standards the Chinese government set for the Beijing Olympics did not help, either. It has become apparent that New Delhi's hydra-headed management style was ill-equipped from the start to stitch together an event on this scale, particularly in the full glare of global publicity.

A full week after the Canadian hockey team landed in India, customs officials had still not released its sticks and uniforms. An official who was battling Tuesday to resolve several crises in the village said that the bureaucracy's left hand did not know what its right hand was doing. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters.

At least 21 government departments oversaw the construction projects for the Games. Many of the agencies were either unaware of their assigned responsibilities or disputed them, and they maintained different sets of timelines for the same project. Almost all the construction deadlines were revised three to four times.

"It is the problem of too many cooks. There is no single person who is in charge, who is accountable and whose neck is on the line," said Tarun Das, former head of the Confederation of Indian Industry. "Every project was delayed, and quality was compromised."

The athletes' village on the Yamuna riverbed was beset by problems from the beginning. It was slowed by environmental lawsuits, on-site protests and the global economic slowdown. It took 17 months to get all the bureaucratic clearances. Workers are still carrying out last-minute fixes at the village.

"We can brag as much as we like about the new India. But when it comes to delivering on an international commitment, we are no China. We are still corrupt, slothful old India," the Hindustan Times' editorial director, Vir Sanghvi, wrote Sunday.

A World Bank report about the ease of doing business in different countries ranks India 133rd and China 89th. Enforcing a contract in India takes an average 1,420 days, compared with 406 days in China. Closing down a bankrupt business takes seven years in India, whereas it takes 20 months in China.

"If you want to build a world-class transport infrastructure in a city in India, you are challenged by an already over-crowded place, with narrow roads and no maps for the underground water, electricity and sewerage lines," said Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao, chairman of the GMR Group, which builds power plants, highways and airports across India and led the consortium that built New Delhi's new terminal.

For the Delhi project, Rao said, his company worked with 58 government agencies.

"Our nation is in the process of transition from a command-and-control economic system to a more efficient market-driven structure," he said. "It will take some time till this transition is complete."

There is, however, at least one government structure that works: the Delhi Metro. A fully owned state company, it laid 77 miles of track in less than five years to meet the Commonwealth Games deadline. It helps that the Delhi Metro has as its chief executive an award-winning, tough-as-nails railway engineer named E. Sreedharan, who does not tolerate bureaucratic or political interference and treats targets as sacrosanct.

Bitter truth is that the CWG has already become an international embarrassment to India. Media was calling that out long time back. We can only hope it does not go 50 feet below rock bottom from here.

For us Indians it is hurtful and upsetting to see things turn out this way. But I think we also have to accept we bit more than we could chew. India was not ready for this. India is a progressive country and has progressed in leaps and bounds in the past two decades. I'm sure it will progress much more. At the same time though - we have not been rid of our bureaucracy and red tape. When it comes to public infrastructure - especially to rural areas we don't do to well. While I would love to see India host a spectacular sporting event like this, now was not the time. We were simply under prepared bureaucratically, had this been a privately managed event we may have had our entrepreuners do better.

Lets look at the bright side. Lessons learned, stepping stones to success found. We can now hold the government to its glaring mistakes and push for them to fix the real problems like red tape, corruption, inefficiency etc.

It was wrong to bid for the CWG, because, many Indians still live below the poverty line, and the same amount of money could have been used for their welfare..
We have so many problems to sort, but we're just looking for showing off stuff we don't have, lol.

I am not against India hosting CWG or Olympics or whatever..It's just that this wasn't the right time. And even if it was, it wasn't handled properly.

I don't think it was wrong to bid for CWG. The initial budget for the games was only a few thousand crores which ultimately shot up by 20-30 times. We all now know why it shot up (read corruption).

If only competent people were at the helms of affairs (in place of likes of Kalmadi who has failed miserably). Bhanot looks more like a halwai than a sports administrator. We needed someone like Lalit Modi who (leaving aside his -ves) is young, experienced, energetic and pushy. IOA could have sought help from BCCI. It has years of experience in organising big events including world cups.

But all said and done, being a dilliwala myself (infact I daily pass by the CWG village near Akshardham Temple on my way to office) meri shubhkamnaye CWG ke saath hai. May it gets completed successfully in grand style to everyone's satisfaction. 👍🏼
