CHAPTER 15

"Hello Bhai , I got the file"
Abhay told Adarsh over the phone. He was in Suhasini's office, executing the first steps of their plan.

"Good, bring it home . Make sure that no one sees you"
Adarsh said in a hushed voice

"Don't worry Bhai, dealing with thieves has taught me their modus operandi. Just did not know I would have to use it against my own mother"
Abhay replied

"Now Mom will go bonkers over this missing file. She might have grown to like her but she hates incompetence. She will surely terminate Swadheenta from the job if it causes her to lose the case. And Mr. Ramakrishnan will not take it very well. Swadheenta is his pampered daughter"
Adarsh said , proud of his plan

"But Bhai, if Mom ever comes to know that we were behind this, she will throw us out of this house"
Abhay remarked

"Don't forget , it was you who started this plan. Now you can't back off"
Adarsh reminded him

"Arre Bhai, I was just expressing my fear. But you don't worry, I am even more firm than Salman Khan in keeping my commitment"
Abhay assured his brother

Next day , Suhasini returned from office looking very worried. She directly went to her study and started scanning through her shelf of files. Simmi went up to her and asked ,
"What happened Mom ? You look very disturbed. Are you looking for something ?"

"Yes, An important file. I had asked Swadheenta to prepare the papers and keep it on my desk, but I did not find it there. So I thought maybe I brought it here by mistake"
Suhasini said , going through the contents of her study table

"Did you call and ask Swadheenta ?"
Simmi cautiously questioned

"Yes, she is saying that she had prepared it and kept it on my table. Now I do not want to trouble her any further. Her father is not well"
Saying this she went out of her room and proceeded towards Adarsh's room

"Where are you going Mom ?"
Simmi got tensed as the file was with Adarsh

"I should check it everywhere in the house. I have already searched twice in the office. It was not there. It cannot just vanish into thin air. Maybe I have kept it somewhere absentmindedly"
Suhasini said entering Adarsh's room

Adarsh was surprised to see his Mom

"Adarsh , have you seen any blue file marked with "State vs Puran Singh" , that I might have forgotten in your room ?"
Suhasini asked him

Adarsh had not expected this. What was he going to do now ? The file was under his mattress. He tried to see with the corner of his eye if it was peeping out.
"Nn..no Mom. There was no such file."
He fumbled

"Yes Mom, you are never so irresponsible that you will misplace such an important file. I think Swadheenta herself has forgotten to bring it to your office."
Simmi tried to divert her attention towards Swadheenta

"Yes, she can do that. Don't you remember how she mixed up two files of similar name?"
Adarsh reminded his Mom

"Mom, was it a very important file ? Will you lose the case if you don't find it?"
Simmi asked

"I don't know. Will try to get another date"
Suhasini said

"But I think you should definitely take her to task. I mean your assistant"
Adarsh deliberately brainwashed her

"Hmm..you are right. I have to talk to her. This was such an important case. An innocent man can get convicted because of her carelessness"
Saying this she left the room

Adarsh breathed a sigh of relief. He had a narrow escape today. He thanked Simmi for helping him and then picked up his phone to call Swadheenta

"Hello Swadheenta, is your Appa nearby ?"
Adarsh asked

"Yes, and why are you calling me now ? Didn't I say we will talk when I return to Delhi?"
Swadheenta said getting irritated

"I promise I won't call after this but Mom is going to call you anytime . What you have to do is put the phone on speaker. Don't ask anymore questions , just do what I say. Please do this one thing for me"
Adarsh said and disconnected the call

Swadheenta could not understand Adarsh's intentions. However she decided to go ahead with his instructions. Soon Suhasini called. She put the phone on loudspeaker

"How much more irresponsible can you be Swadheenta. An innocent person can go behind bars due to this act of yours. Have you ever thought about his family , his children"
Suhasini blasted her assistant

"No Mam, believe me. I kept it on your table only. Maybe Dubeyji..."
Swadheenta tried to explain

Suhasini - "Don't put the blame on others. I hate this habit"

Swadheenta, miserable now - "I am sorry Mam, I did not mean to blame anyone. But I have not been careless this time. I remember very well that I put it on your table"

Suhasini, raising her voice even more - "Then what happened to it ? It grew wings on its own and flew out of the window ?"

"Enough Mrs Sinha, I know you are her boss but I would not tolerate anyone talking to my daughter in that tone"

Mr. Ramakrishnan was listening to the conversation quietly till now, but he could not tolerate his beloved daughter getting humiliated for no fault of hers.

Suhasini could not believe her ears. She had not realized that the phone was on loudspeaker.
"Viju?"
The word involuntarily escaped her mouth. Then she quickly disconnected the call.

It took some time for Swadheenta to fully understand what just happened. Then it became clear to her. This was all Adarsh's doing . So, this was the plan he was talking about. He wanted to create misunderstandings between their parents so that they break their relationship, and their path is cleared. No, this was wrong. She will have to talk to him

CHAPTER 15

"Appa, are you alright ?"
Swadheenta asked with concern

"Oh yes, I am fine"
Mr. Ramakrishnan was brought back from his thoughts by Swadheenta's question

"Appa, did I hear it correct? Did she call you Viju? No one calls you by that name except Grandma."
Swadheenta wanted to get things clear

"Swadheenta, I had meant to tell you this since a long time but could not muster up enough courage. The truth is Suhasini and I are seeing each other. It started even before you became her assistant. No no, we don't have any plans of getting married. We just enjoy each other's company and that's it. So you don't have to worry about your Amma"
Ramakrishnan said apologetically

"You don't have to give any explanations Appa. I am glad you found someone. I am just worried if Grandma comes to know then she will get mad"
Swadheenta cautioned

"Please don't tell her"
Ramakrishnan begged

Swadheenta nodded, then she went out to make a call

"Do you want to give my Appa another heart attack? What kind of a plan is this? You knew he would lose his temper."
Swadheenta blasted Adarsh

"I am so sorry Swadheenta. I should have thought about it. I promise I would not repeat it. But tell me, did they fight?"
Adarsh could not help asking

"No, your Mom was sensible enough to disconnect the call once Appa got overprotective of his daughter and started shouting at her. Listen Adarsh, if anything happens to my Appa because of your ploys, we are done"
Swadheenta cut the call without waiting for an answer.

Adarsh hung his head in disappointment and went out of the room to get some fresh air and clear his mind. That was when he noticed his mother walking in the lawn and talking to someone. He strained his ears to hear the conversation.
"No no..you don't have to apologise, it was my fault. I should learn to keep my sarcastic tongue in check...No,your daughter is a wonderful girl. Such minor mistakes do happen when you are under a lot of pressure...I should have thought about your health. I riled you up for no reason...Believe me Viju, I did not mind it one bit."

Oh no, they seem to have patched up already! Infact they didn't even make any issue out of it. And look at his ladylove, she is threatening to cut all contacts. Adarsh felt like hitting his head on the wall.

"Bhaiya, when are we going to return the file to Mom? She is getting ready for the court."
Simmi asked him

"Our plan has completely backfired, Simmi. Now go and give it to Mom. Make any excuse, just be careful so that you are not caught"
Adarsh said sadly while handing the file to her.

Simmi tiptoed into Suhasini's study. Fortunately for her, she was not there. She put it on the table and turned to leave when she saw Suhasini standing at the door and looking at her suspisciously.
"What are you doing here? This is not an area of the house you generally like to visit."
Suhasini asked sternly

"Mom, I was coming to look for you. The file that you were looking for, I found it. It was in my room"
Simmi was trying to concoct a believable story in her mind.

"And what was it doing in your room?"
Suhasini frowned

"I think Abhay brought it by mistake. Somedays back he needed a file from your office related to some old case that has been reopened. I think this one got mixed with that."
Simmi was praying fervently that Suhasini would believe her.

"Hmm...now give it to me. I am getting late for the trial."
Suhasini took the file and left. Simmi could not make out from her face whether she believed her or not, but she was relieved on not being questioned further.

Suhasini was on her way to the court. She checked the file once more. No, nothing had been changed. Then what was the reason Simmi was lying to her? She might he a bit spoilt but she could never have any nefarious intentions. Abhay was supposed to take the file about ten days ago. Swadheenta had not even prepared this one at that time. The boys never took any file without her permission. She wondered what was the matter. All the three kids had been behaving rather strangely for the past few days. She did not want to interfere in their lives. However, she hoped they would tell her if they were in any sort of problem.

For the next two weeks, mission break-up was put on hold. Adarsh did not want too anger Swadheenta any further. Finally she was back in Delhi and Adarsh could not wait to meet her.

"Swadheenta, please try and understand. Life without you seems to have lost all meaning. I cannot give you up so easily. Moreover our parents are not having a very serious relationship. If we break them up now, no one is going to get hurt."
Adarsh was desperately trying to convince Swadheenta into agreeing to his plan. They have finally met after a long gap of two weeks. Sitting in the same restaurant where they had their first date.

Swadheenta was missing Adarsh as much as he did. Seeing him infront of her eyes had started making her reconsider her resolve. This was such a tricky situation for them. She loved her Appa a lot, but she loved Adarsh as much. She could not see either of them unhappy. May be a smooth break-up would not hurt Appa a lot. In any case, if Grandma comes to know about them, she will never accept their relationship. Adarsh was still waiting anxiously for her answer. She looked at him, held his hand and gave a slight nod.
