CHAPTER 13
Adarsh thought he must be dreaming. Just three days back she confessed in tears her love for him , and now she is telling that they can't see each other any more ? What kind of a joke was that !
"Swadheenta, please take a deep breath and try to relax. I think the anxiety about your Appa's health and the exertion from the journey has really had bad effect on your mind. That is why you are speaking such nonsense."
"I am completely in my senses Adarsh. It is you who needs to relax and listen properly to what I am going to say. This was not an easy decision for me, but I don't see any other way out"
Adarsh could sense her voice choking.
"But how can you alone make such an important decision about our future. Shouldn't we discuss the matter between ourselves first? Tell me the problem first. I am sure there must be another solution."
Adarsh was still trying to make sense of it all. He loved her too much to lose her so easily. He was ready to do anything, even move mountains for her.
But nothing had prepared him for what she said next. He felt everything around him moving round and round. The injury at the back of his head had started throbbing agonisinly. Was he about to pass out? The phone fell from his hands and a dark curtain came down infront of his eyes.
"Adarsh...are you listening to me?...Adarsh..."
Swadheenta was panicking on the other side on not getting any response
A loud thud broke Suhasini's chain of thoughts. The sound seemed to have come from Adarsh's room across the corridor. She quickly got up and hurried towards his room. A loud shriek escaped from her mouth on seeing Adarsh lying on the floor, unconscious. She went near him after calling out to Abhay. Abhay was soon there. Swadheenta had called him when she did not get any response from Adarsh.
Suhasini and Abhay tried to resuscitate him by sprinkling water on his face. Fortunately , they were successful. Adarsh was slowly blabbering something.
"No, this cannot be true. Why me? Mom, you can't do this to me"
Suhasini could not understand what Adarsh was blaming her for. Just then she noticed his phone lying.
"I think he was on a call before passing out. I wonder who it was?"
Saying this she was about to pick up the phone but Abhay quickly took it
"Mom , before going into such investigations ,I think we should call the doctor"
Abhay tried to divert her attention from the call. He knew that Adarsh and Swadheenta were hiding their affair from her.
"Yes, you are right. How stupid of me. Give me the phone , I will call doctor Singh. Don't know if he will be ready to come at this time of the night"
Suhasini extended her hand to take the Adarsh's phone
"I will talk to the doctor. You just sit here with Bhai"
Abhay was desperately trying to keep the phone away from his mother. He dialled the doctor's number and went out into the balcony.
When he came back after making the call he realised what a big mistake he had done by asking Suhasini to be with Adarsh. His brother was still in a delirium and continued blabbering,
"Please don't do this. Please don't leave me. Swa...'
Abhay ran and droppped the entire jug of water on his brother's face.
Adarsh jerked back to his senses and on seeing his mother sitting by his side jumped out of the bed as if he had seen a ghost.
Suhasini looked at him completely puzzled and asked
"Are you OK now ? Why are you looking at me like that ?"
"I think it is just the injury Mom.That is why he is so incoherent. The doctor told it happens sometimes. There is nothing to worry. He has advised some medicines. I will go and get them now itself"
Abhay tried to handle the situation. He was also not aware what happened between him and Swadheenta. She just informed him that Adarsh was not answering and he left for his room soon after without enquiring about anything else.
"No Abhay , you don't have to go anywhere at the moment. I am fine now. You can get the medicines tomorrow morning. For the time being just stay here with me...Mom , you are already tired. I think you should go and rest. Abhay is there with me."
Adarsh was now completely in his senses. But he was unable to think properly in his mother's presence. He also needed to talk to Abhay about something very important.
"Well OK, if you say so. Abhay , please take care of your brother. And let me know if you need anything."
Saying this Suhasini left the room. She could sense that there was something that Adarsh would rather discuss with his brother. She thought it better to leave them alone.
Simmi tried to reach out to Abhay in her sleep and was surprised not to find him there. She sat up in the bed and put on the light. She checked her phone, there was no message. Abhay usually left a message when he had to leave for some urgent work at night. Where could he be? She checked the bathroom. No, not there also. Simmi was really worried now . She could feel the palpitations inside her. Was her husband secretly seeing someone? Oh no, that can't be true. Should she tell her mother about it? What will she say? With all these thoughts running in her head, she left the room and came in the hall. That's when she noticed the lights coming from Adarsh's room. She let out a sigh of relief. Abhay must have gone to check on his brother. She went up the stairs and went towards his room. She could hear them talking agitatedly about something. On listening carefully , she could not believe her ears. She opened the door and shouted'
" You can't go ahead with this Adarsh Bhaiya, this is ince..."
Abhay quickly ran and closed her mouth with his hand before she could complete the sentence. He dragged her inside the room and said ,
"Are you out of your mind? What will Mom say if she hears it?"
"But I am saying what is truth"
Simmi retorted
"Stop fighting you two , and solve my problem first. I cannot live without Swadheenta."
Adarsh scolded them.
" But you can't live with her either unless you ..."
Simmi stopped and looked at Abhay.
"For heaven's sake Simmi complete the sentence"
Adarsh was getting restless
Simmi turned to Adarsh and said,
"Unless you break them up"
"What ?"
Both the brothers said in unison
"If you have another solution to it then tell me"
Simmi asked
The brothers were quiet. It was true they could not see another way out of this peculiar situation that Adarsh had got into.
Adarsh was especially miserable. He felt as if moving mountains for his lady love would have been an easier task. He knew Swadheenta was equally miserable. She too had not seen this coming. When she had tried to inform Suhasini about her father's health she found that there was no network in her phone. She therefore dialled her boss's number from her father's phone and was surprised to find that the number was already saved in it. She got curious and checked the chat history. That was when she realized that her father was dating her boss. Not just her boss but her boyfriend's mother too. Oh, and her father's name was Vijaykumar Ramakrishnan , with some more suffixes that Adarsh could not remember.
"When Mom got to know about our affair, she interrogated even about her extended family, and when it came to herself she did not even say his full name. That is so unfair."
Abhay complained
"Now there is no use crying over spilt milk. Let us discuss the more important matter at hand. So tell me Adarsh Bhaiya , are you up for it ?"
Simmi asked Adarsh.
"What?"
Adarsh was thinking something else.
"Breaking up your Mom and her Dad. Else be prepared to lose your girl forever"
Simmi declared
"I agree with her Bhai. You have to do this. Don't worry , we are always there with you"
Saying this, Abhay gave his brother a shoulder squeeze.
Adarsh looked at him and nodded.
P.S. - I don't know how you are going to take it but this was always the original plot of the story. This was the "dilemma" the title suggested. I will continue only if I get positive responses.
