CHAPTER 17
When Adarsh returned home, he went to check on his mother. After the talk with Swadheenta, he realized that he was taking the matter too lightly. His mother was a proud woman. The way Mr. Ramakrishnan accused her would have definitely hurt her ego. He entered her study and found her calling someone over the phone. May be the other person did not answer. She redialled the number.
"Whom are you trying to call ? Is it someone important?"
Adarsh enquired
"Ah...yes..I was trying to call Vijay, but..."
Saying this she once again dialled his number
Adarsh looked at her incredulously. The man insulted her and she is trying to call him. What was wrong with her? If it was anyone else, she would have already shown him his place.
"But why are you getting so impatient? He must be busy in some other work."
Adarsh said, acting as if he didn't know anything.
"No, he is disconnecting the call. Actually we had a minor misunderstanding, and due to that he is angry with me. I was also in a bad mood last evening, so did not make any attempt to clear it then. But it's no use clutching onto your ego."
Suhasini said helplessly
"What kind of misunderstanding?"
Adarsh asked
Suhasini explained everything to him. Hearing this he said angrily,
"This misunderstanding is totally due to his fault. The man is too egoistic to appreciate your genuine gesture of help. I don't understand why you need to explain your position. If you continue to bend before him like that, he is soon going to walk all over you"
Adarsh said with genuine concern. He could not let anyone hurt her.
"Yes, I know. But I don't want to repeat the mistakes I did with your Dad. You know how much I hated explaining myself. Both of us had huge egos. No one was ready to bend, and that spelled doom for our marriage. Communication is the key to any relationship. You are right with your concern, but I cannot let a silly misunderstanding take root. That would be too much immature of me."
Suhasini explained gently
"But he is not even ready to pick up your call. Misunderstandings can be cleared only when the other person is ready to give you the benefit of doubt."
Adarsh said restlessly
"I know. I guess I should drop him a message."
Saying this, she started typing.
Adarsh looked at his mother and wondered if she was seriously in love with her Viju. She had started changing. She was doing things he would have never expected her to do. Was he doing the right thing by trying to break them up? He decided to talk to Abhay about this.
"I think you are reading too much into this. She cannot be that serious. Just two days back I saw her in a restaurant with Dad. They were chatting like old friends"
Abhay tried to brush off his fears.
"That's because they are old friends. They often meet over coffee. That does not mean she is not in love with Mr. Ramakrishnan."
Adarsh said skeptically
"Ok, for a moment let us assume they are actually in love, but this love has no future. They cannot get together as long as Swadheenta's grandmother is alive."
Abhay pointed out
"But Mom is going to be heartbroken"
Adarsh said worriedly
"Chill Bhai, our Mom is very strong. She will pull herself together in no time."
Abhay assured him.
Just then Simmi entered looking very tensed. Abhay asked her,
"What is the matter dear? it looks as if someone has rinsed all the colour off your face."
"There is a very bad news, my mother has spotted Adarsh bhaiya and Swadheenta together in the mall. Now she is hell bent on finding more about them. She just now called me up to ask if I knew about it"
Simmi said in one breath.
"So, what did you say?"
Abhay asked
"I told her that I had a vague idea about it, and she scolded me for not informing her. The worst thing is she has already put a detective to work"
Simmi said hesitantly
"Your mother is just impossible. I really don't understand what she gets by interfering in others' lives."
Abhay said indignantly
"If she comes to know about Swadheenta's identity, she is going to have a field day gossiping about it. It would be a golden opportunity for her to put Mom down"
Adarsh remarked tensely
"Sorry Adarsh Bhaiya, but my mother never tries to put your mother down. It is your Mom who has a problem with my family because we are not so educated and cultured. Mummy had warned me not to disclose this information to you but I was concerned for you and Swadheenta."
Simmi was annoyed
"I am sorry Simmi, please don't take my words to heart. I am just too tensed at the moment to think clearly"
Adarsh tried to control the situation
"So what are you going to do now? Will you stop meeting Swadheenta?"
Simmi asked doubtfully
"No way, I am not going to do any such thing. Just do me a favour. Please try and find out the contact information of her detective agency. Rest you leave it to me."
Adarsh said.
"I think I know what you are up to. Nevertheless, I will help you. I want the two of you to be together. I know for the first time in my life I am going to do something against my mother, but it will be for a good cause."
Simmi declared
"Wow Simmi, you are getting smarter by the day. I am impressed"
Abhay said smiling
"What do you mean? That I was not smart earlier?"
Simmi said with fake anger. She was about to throw a pillow at him when she heard her mother in law calling her. She put down the pillow and went out.
"Are you going to do what I am thinking? I mean are you going to pay the detective to not divulge any information to Simmi's Mom?"
Abhay asked
"I guess even Simmi thinks so, but I am afraid the detective might double cross us even after getting the money. Therefore I have a different plan this time."
Adarsh paused and smiled looking at his brother.
"Why are you looking at me like that?"
Abhay asked , a bit puzzled
"You know having a police officer as your little brother can be of immense help at such times. Do you now get my point?"
Adarsh said mischievously
"Huff...not again !"
Abhay said apprehensively
"Abhay, it's my order"
Adarsh said sternly
"OK, as you wish."
Abhay gave up
Adarsh patted his back and said happily,
"That's like a good boy"
