Chapter 19-Friends Then and Now

It's true what they say, laughter is infectious. But you know what? I think love is too. But not in the full on laughter kind of way, but in the steady quiet lifetime of dedication kind of way. That's how it is with Nandini and Chandrasekhar.For them love didn't arrive slowly .It was the clap of thunder kind! But once you've felt love like that, you can never imagine a life without it. It can't stay as a thunder clap . It holds true for them as well.

Both Nandini and Chandra loved each other deeply. Their affection for one another radiated from them, touching the lives of everyone they knew. Both were so happy and relaxed in each other's company. In spite of everyday monotonous life,love was growing deep between them.

It was a busy Wednesday morning .The sun glowed insistently. Chandrasekhar was getting ready for the office. He asks "Nandini, bring my briefcase? I have an important meeting today. "
Nandini answers " yes I am coming

Nandini hands over the briefcase to him and says "Thanks "

Chandrasekhar quiet puzzled by her abrupt talks and asks "for what you are thanking me ? for eating your breakfast?" . He made a mischievous smile. Nandini stares at him and says "for paying Sridhar's school fees.

Chandra casually answers "He is a brilliant boy,so I have decided to help him and more than that he is your brother too".Nandini eyes was full of gratitude.Bindu came running towards Chandrasekhar.

Chandra plants a mild kiss in the cheeks of Bindu and pats Nandini's shoulder .He climbs into the car and it raced away in full speed. Both mother and son watches his car till it vanishes from their eyesight.

After a couple of hours ,Bindu was playing in the hall and Nandini was very busy in the kitchen when the phone rang. The servant picked up the phone and in no time she handed the phone to Nandini saying that Chandrasekhar wants to speak to her. She beamed with happiness upon learning Chandra wants to speak to her

Nandini "Hello... "

Chandra requested "Nandini do me one favor ...Go to Swasti's house and collect a book related to company amalgamation procedure . I need the book before noon for reference" .Nandini acquiesced to his words.

Nandini takes Bindu along with her, gets into a car. When the car was waiting for the traffic signal, she notices Helen going inside a building. She saw the name of the building and it was Income tax office.Something is fishy,why would Helen should go to the income tax office alone. Where is Mr Shaheer , the auditor of Matrix. "

Nandini decides to find out what is happening in the company and she calls Ashwath.

Ashwath"Maiyaa.. kya bat hei?"

Nandini questions hastily" Ashwath,kya shaheer sir entrusted Helen to submit tax files?"

Ashwath" Why would he ? we have already filed the income tax last week itself. I was with him all the time."

Nandini "Where is Helen ?"

Ashwath "Nandini,these days she is not coming to Matrix at all. I heard that she will be leaving for Greece by next month."

Nandini "Oh I see..Thanks you Ashwath ! Sorry to disturb you..."

Ashwath "Welcome Yara"

Nandini was in deep thought. "Something is wrong somewhere "she pondered.

The car stops before a independent house in south Delhi. The house was very small in size and simple in appearance. The courtyard was surrounded by many flowering plants and creepers. It adds a pleasant aura to the atmosphere.There were many birds happily chirping among themselves. Nandini softly knocks the door and smiles as Swasti opened the door.

"Nandini,welcome.She hugged Nandini and patted Bindu. Nandini made her comfortably seated in the sofa and Bindu started to explore the house. After some initial talks,Swasti began to speak .

Swasti Would you like to have a filter coffee Nandini?

Nandini happily agreed "Of course Swasti."

Within a short span of time,Swasti came with a two cups of hot coffee and hands one of the cups to Nandini .She takes a sip "It tastes so good. Swasti. It looks as though I am drinking my mother's preparation."

Swasti casually remarked "My mother used to get coffee beans whenever she visits Chennai. You Know Nandini,half of the inhabitants of Mylapore are related to us in some way or other."

Nandini in between sips "You are so lucky to have a big circle of relatives Swasti."

Swasti acknowledged her words"That's so true. "

Swasti continues after some seconds "Nandini,I spoke to your mother in law yesterday in temple. It is very heartening to see Morni ma happy and relieved after so many days .She heaps praises on you . I am so happy for you"(pauses to take another sip) "How is Chandra treating you Nandini?"

Nandini chortled" He still treats me like an employee.Nandini do this ,do that and why it is like this. He always gives me orders. Dear Swasti ,I have a doubt, does your friend knows how to smile? ".

Swasti laughed for some time before answering her question. "Nandini he was known as a fun-loving, easy-going person in our college." Seeing signs of disbelief in Nandini's facial expression ,Swasti continues "What you don't believe my words? Wait I will show you the photo album." Swasti got up from the sofa and took a photo album from a table drawer .

Swasti opened the photo album and showed the photographs taken during college days.With a child like curiousity,Nandini began to see the photographs.

Nandini could not believe her eyes at all when she spotted Chandra and Malay together in all photographs .They was so happy and seems to enjoy each other's company.. She knew Chandra and Malayesh were always at loggerheads and cannot tolerate each other's presence even for a second these days.It was something new to her to find Malay and Chandra were besties in college days.

There were many photos in the album. One of the photographs depicted Chandra keeping hand over Malay and Praghosh was standing in one side making a funny face . Another photo clearly shows their visit to Cauvery river for a swim while girls were shouting at them. It also had their excursion photos . Some of them were attributed to their college tournaments and symposiums. Chandra was looking so handsome in the formal outfit in that symposium. Chandra was seen alone with a girl in one photo.Graduation day photo was also there in that album.In all these photos the friends were brimming with joy and laughter.Swasti was explaining her the photos.

Swasti recalled " Myself,Chandrasekhar,Malayesh,Vaishnavi, Arjun, Praghosh,Kripa were best friends in IIM TIRCHY."

Nandini " Is it? I never knew that he got graduated in Tirchy? Wait did you say Malayesh and Chandra were close friends"

Nandini wanted to reconfirm her statement

Swasti answered "Yes Nandini. We all were very good friends. In fact our batch mates used to call us Fantastic 7 of IIM. We always used to hang out together .Be it college,library,symposium,seminar,cultural event or cinema ,you can always find us together."

she continues"Do you know Chandra and Arjun were state level boxing champions. Praghosh used to sing very well .Malay was a chess player. We girls used to play for volleyball tournaments. I bet nobody could have enjoyed college days like us. We had a great time together and lot of fun. "She pauses to take a sip"After college,we all joined Matrix together. Everything was perfect until Praghosh started to love Vaishnavi who in turn started to develop feelings for Chandrasekhar. Chandra too reciprocated her love".

Nandini cross questioned "Swasti ,Who is this Vaishnavi?"

Swasti amused to hear "Chandra did not say anything about Vaishnavi to you?"

Nandini answered "No... I know that he loved Dhara very much,but I have not heard about VaishnaviSwasti shows her that photograph in which Chadnra and Vaishnavi were standing together."

Swasti "Nandini, Chandra was somewhat forcibly married to Dhara by Vishnu sir. Later he started to love her as any husband would do after marriage.Till now I don't know what made Chandra to marry Dhara . Vishnu is a shrewd businessman and could have convinced Chandrasekhar."

Nandini "Swasti,Where is Vaishnavi now?"

Swasti "Vaishnavi is no more .She hanged herself in her flat after Chandra's marriage with Dhara.She pauses " Malay accused Vishnu sir's hand behind Vaishnavi's suicide. Praghosh too claimed that he saw Vishnu threatening Vaishnavi. In this issue,Malay started to sideline with Praghosh while Chandra took side of Vishnu .There were many word wars between the friends. I tried to stop and unite them again,but it was too late."

Nandini in confusion"Why would Vishnu do it?"

Swati quietly answers "It is because Dhara loved Chandra very much.!

Nandini did not reply. She continued to look at Vaishnavi's face in the photo album ,it was very serene and calm.

Swasti asked her pointing to the photograph"Now do you know why he loves you?"

Nandini answered in soft voice "My face resembles Vaishnavi's.

Swasti continued " That's right!Many times Chandra himself told me that you are looking exactly like Vaishnavi.

There was silence in the room.Bindu was now started to tear book cover and magazines patiently while looking at his mother. Nandini broke the silence" Did they find the reason of her suicide?"

Swasti looks into the photo and touches Vaishnavi's face "No they have closed the file saying some odd reasons.Thanks to Mrs Vishnugupt's political influence.Praghosh alleged some foul play by Vishnugupt.He even said that he has many evidences against Vishnu.Praghosh was about to file a case in court seeking CBI enquiry when he was killed in a road accident under mysterious circumstances . Everybody opines that Vishnu's hand is behind this accident, but again Chandra did not believe. Malay and Chandra friendship started to deteriorate."

Nandini asks "How come Malayesh is unharmed, if his allegations are true?"

Swasti replies "His father Parvartesh Rajan is a very big business tycoon. No one can even touch Malayesh . "

Nandini in state of disbelief Swasti,"It is a wonder how Chandra believes Vishnu blindly when his own best friends suspect him?"

Swasti "See,Vishnugupt is not proven guilty and Chandra respects him a lot!Nandini,more than that Vishnu is a skilled actor. He knows all in and out about people and manipulates them accordingly. "

Nandini "Has he forgotten Vaishnavi ?"

Swasti "He still mourns for her deep in his heart.Life has terribly failed him twice in the matters of love and relations. Chandra has no energy left even to cry if the life fails him again for the third time. His biggest weakness now is you and Dev.Promise me That you will stand by his side in all the circumstances."

Nandini promises "Swasti,don't worry I will always take care of him .Though I cannot give him what he has lost in the flow of time,I can still make and keep him happy so that he will not brood over the past.That would be a promise from my side to his best friend."

Swasti embraced Nandini and "I knew ...I was right"

By that time ,Bindu started to cry and became cranky. He got bored and wants to go out .He started to throw tantrums, Nandini hurried up Swasti. She gave the book which Chandra asked for. Nandini bid farewell to Swasti after collecting the book from her.
