CHAPTER 21 PILLAR OF STRENGTH

Chandra and Nandini were seated in the hospital . The chief midwife explains them that results will be out in some time.She explains them clearly about Down's syndrome and how does it affect a child's learning process.She further says in case if the child is indeed affected by Down's syndrome,they can always abort the child. Chandra listened patiently but when he heard the word about abortion,his anger knew no bounds.

"What rubbish your are talking madam?

"Sir,please be calm. No parents will like to have a mentally affected child. Will you?

Nandini looked at his eyes and she was gesturing him to accept.
Chandra,we will abort the child. We don't want a burden like this. Wont Dev life be affected and wont he curse us for this ?

"I don't know about Dev,Morni or even you Nandini.What you all think about this child is irrelevant to me. I am there for this child. I will be the pillar of strength. God has chosen me as a dad to this child because he knows only I can love and accept him.I don't care what others do . Turning to midwife " We don't want to abort the child

"No Madam... I have lost lots of persons in my life and this child should not join the list.Please try to understand.At that time a peon came and informed them that their gynecologist wanted to meet them as the reports have been arrived.

Doctor Vatsala Sheratur is a leading and well experienced gynecologist in the country.She welcomed them with a smile and asked them to take their seats

"Nandini's reports has come "she hands over the report and asks him to read the report.His firm hands were slightly shaking although his demeanor were calm and determined.He opened the report and read the inference part after skipping the technical finding.

He sees the doctor "Doc...Are you sure...I can't believe it Oh my God.

"you are right,the baby is healthy and fine.I had my doubt because her hcg values were quiet low for 4 weeks. But now even that is coherent with the dates.Congratulations to both of you

"Thank you doctor

They both came outside and went inside a cafe to have some coffee.

"Nandini,I don't know why our life is full of surprise and shocks.

"Is it? I don't think so Chandra.

" Oh my God.Have you forgotten our first meet Nandini.I think 2 years ago we met in Tiruchy.

"Yes. It was very chaotic

Nandini recalls that day,when she and her friends were going to take some casual bath in Cauvery. At that time,Chandra was present to study the land which Matirx may buy .He took the binoculars to survey the surrounding and was busily speaking to Radhika who was there at that time to evaluate the land. Nandini's friend Sowmya notices him and immediately came out from the waters. Alerted her other companions .This made them to quickly wrap the dry cloths.Sowmya ,her friends along with Nandini went to confront Chandrasekhar.

"Hey you?Why are you ogling at the girls. Sowmya demanded an answer for his behavior.Chandra did not notice these girls actually bathing. He was puzzled .

"What rubbish you are talking Ma'am?Chandra in a polite voice tried to explain.

"Rubbish is looking at girls through binoculars. Even one of my friends saw you"Sowmya frowned at him and turning to "Nandini,you too saw him right ? "

Nandini looked at him. But did not reply she immediately lowered her gaze and her friends notices her .Nandini in low voiceSowmya,looks like he is a big shot. Namaku yen vambu(Why should we get into fight ) lets go "

Nandini turning to Chandra "Sorry " in a very low soft voice.

They left the place and Chandra was seeing them going . The scent of Nandini was still lingering in his nostrils which she left when she crossed him. He was seen loosing his mind.

"Oh.."He felt embarrassed.

His phone rings and it was Vishnu. Chandra explains the land details to him. He gave instructions to Chandra through phone.

"Radhika,this land is just perfect for base station. Whose land is this?".

"Mr Padmanabhan of Srirangam Sir".

"We will meet him today itself .Arrange the meeting.Chandra gave instructions to Radhika."

On the way back home ,Nandini's friends were teasing him as though she was besotted at his charm.

"Sowmya,What song did you sing in the Swamy temple today?".

"Annalum Nokkinal,avalum nokinal" *please refer notes"

One of her friends jokingly "Nandini,looks like your hero is a north Indian . Your family wont accept him.

"Nandini's appa will accept "teased her another friends.

" Stop it girls. For me first is career".Nandini tried to put them their talks to rest.

"Is it ? so what get married and go to office. Looks like your Ram will buy you a new company .Just signal him through your eyes"Sowmya teased .

" Sowmya, did he say to you?".

"Well,I can deduce ."Sowmya answered to Nandini's accusation.

" First go and complete your Maths calculus notes." Nandini gave a shot.

Nandini went to her house after chiding her friends.

It was soon noon,when she heard a knock in the door.Nandini goes to open the door and a person asks "Mr Padmanabhan's house?"

"Yes ".Nandini looking suspiciously at the person as she has never seen him before.

The person goes to the car which was standing before her house gate and politely opens the door . Nandini leans forward to see the person and was shocked "Oh God..Binocular guy."

Chandra did not see her. Nandini ran inside the house and sent her father to tackle him.

Her father welcomed him cordially and Chandra too was very much humble.

Padmanabhan called " Nandini,get three cups of coffee."

As soon Chandra heard the word Nandini,his face got brightened up. He was anxiously waiting for her to come ,but got disappointed to see Sridhar to come with tray of coffee. Radhika noticed this and made a slight cough. Ashwath also made a small smile.

After 10 minutes Chandra could not convince her father to sell the land.

" Sir,I can understand your sentiments. I will not force you. Still,my visit is not futile as I had a cup of aromatic and hot coffee. Your daughter hands got a magic."

Padmanabhan got very happy to hear this.He was innocent and he could not understand the hidden agenda of Chandra .Chandrasekhar purposely spoke this anticipating that Nandini's father will call her out.He was right.

"Nandini.come here".

Nandini comes out and she saw Chandra once and immediately lowered her eyes as he left a smile.

" Nandini,what happened to you today? Sir says you made a good coffee".Padmanabhan asked surprisingly as his daughter always talkative daughter became so silent.

"Thank you sir". Nandini went inside the room.

Chandra saw this and smiled. He bade a farewell to Padmanabhan.

Next day was a half day for Nandini.She was returning in the bus to her house. The bus was almost empty except for few hawkers who were sleeping by keeping their baskets under the seat. She found a corner seat empty and sat near the window.

" Hi " a strong masculine voice from behind.

Nandini turns instinctively and finds Chandrasekhar seated behind her.have you forgotten me?so early?

" Pardon".

" How come I remember your name,but you forgot?"

"Pardon"

Conductor sees this unusual combination and Nandini got scared . "Anna ,next stop."

Conductor blows the whistle,without replying to his words ,she got down from the bus and boarded into a auto "Anna, Thillai nagar "
Nandini goes to her closest friend Sowmya's place. Sowmya was preparing for notes for her class next day in the college.She is an assistant professor in department of Mathematics.

" Di... What to do now?" Nandini laments after saying all the happenings.

Sowmya blew a whistle "Wow,re what a courtship?"

"bucch"

" Hey Nandini, looks like he is crazy for you ,and you alone".

" I know,thats why I hate him?Nandini replies.

"Why " Sowmya now closed her maths book and looks for an answer from Nandini.

"He never knows me,but follows me like a hutch dog".

Sowmya gave a loud laugh "Don't say Nandini, 1 sec enough for love ".She examines Nandini's face What did he see in this face to fall in love with you?"

"How do I know Sowmya?"

She hears a horn outside the house and Sowmya looks out.

"Hey Nandini,that romeo is here . oh my God! he is definitely mad. He has come here too" Sowmya alerted Nandini.

Nandini looks puzzled.

"Wait ! Nandini I will come with you.I have some scores to settle with him".Sowmya daringly dashes the front gate and confronts Chandra

"Mr..." Sowmya tried to control her anger as he was scanning her face.
"Chandrasekhar ,CEO of Matrix my dear young fragile lady."

"Dont call me dear...Why you are following us?"

"Did I Sowmi? "Chandra in a husky voice.

"What... Who gave you rights to call me by my pet name?"
Chandra makes an innocent face.

"My dear ladies,Can we go to a cafe and sort out everything?"

" Why should we come with you? Do we know each other before? "Sowmya in a top of her voice

" Well,how many minutes do you want?"Chandra in a calm tone.

"For what ?"Sowmya asked

"To know me?"Chandra replied.

" I don't want to know you" Sowmya retorted.

"The offer is not for you Sowmi.It is for your friend Nandini."Chnadra points his hand to Nandini.

"She rejects your dumb offer ."Sowmya says by looking very seriously at Nandini's face

"Wont your friend speak? " Chandra asked again.

"No she wont speak ."Sowmya assertively.

"Strange... very strange. "Chandra looks at his watch.

"Time is up my dear sweeties. Tomorrow I will be waiting for you in that cafe around 12 pm. If Nandini comes ,I will be happy,else we will be parting as good friends."

The cafe which Chandra was referring was situated a quiet street of Tiruchy. Only college goers will visit the place. Nandini at first did not want to see him,but later she went there.

Nandini went to the cafe at the specified time by Chandrasekhar.

She glanced the tables and found he did not come .Nandini was about to return.

"Hi sweetie".

Nandini's heart was beating very fast as she heard his dominating voice.

"I know you would come Nandini he helps her seated in a chair."

"How do you know?"

"I am a business man,a pucca .I know who will buy who will not?"

A waiter came and before Nandini would open her mouth Chandra "two cup of cappuccino with extra cream

Looking at her face ." Nandini ,I know you like this.Not only this I know all about you,what you like,not like.Most specifically you like that actor .Am I right?"

Nandini hurriedly " Yes... no.. I came here to say,that we cannot even be a friends".

"Why Nandini?".

" I cannot say the reason...May be "

"Because I am a widower and have a infant,age difference is huge,cultural differences Chandra completes her sentence

"Yes, more than that I don't want a second hand ".Nandini gave a sharp word and was about to get up.

" Wait and sit down "came a dominating words from Chandra.Nandini sat as though she was chained by his voice.

" Listen ,Nandini. I know you are not telling me the truth .I have seen you getting so friendly with my son when he was lost in the temple.It is you,who found him and took a very good care of him,until I came searching for him. Do you remember?"

"I play with even my neighbor's child. Should I marry him?I cannot understand your logic sir "Nandini in low voice .

"Dont call me sir.Call me sekhar ,that's how my friends call me."Chandra says firmly.

" See ... anyway even going by that logic it was hardly 15 minutes I spent with your son. You think I can be a good mother .Sir,admit you see lots of tamil cinemas ".Nandini replied

" Even 1 minute is enough for me to judge anyone Nandini."

"Whatever.I cannot marry ".Nandini was determined.

" Why Nandini?

" It is none of your business Sir."

" I need the damn answer Nandini."

"I am not obliged to give you an answer. "

"Then why did you smile every time when you see me?

"Oh,is it a sin to smile.Just say me one word sir,Am I only one to smile to you.Sir,I need time to know you. "

"Oh,my God.Till now you did not understand,that I can achieve anything under the sun Nandini.

"You can buy all under the sun sir ".Nandini pauses " thats why I am scared. "

" All except unconditional love Nandini. I have seen many girls in my life. They are after my power,money.But I find only your face which is printed in my mind when I think of love,affection,warmth. It is beyond sex and passion."

For a couple of minutes there was silence between them. Nandini broke the silence.

" Sir... I have to leave now.It is getting late."

" Don't hide ...I know you love me... Say me a acceptable real reason?"

Chandra made his fist land on the table.It made a loud thud inviting the attention of the hotel staffs.

Chandra regained his senses and "Nandini,please say me the real reason?"

Nandini took a deep breath

"Because,I don't know who are my biological parents. I don't know to whom I was born?My father found me abandoned in the Sita temple of Sitamarhi. I don't know whether my mother was a good women or a wh...leave it.It does not going to change. Now satisfied. You may say it is all does not matter.But to society it a matter of talk.Please don't waste your time Sir Nandini eyes were filled with tears."

She continues

"Though,I have no issues with my foster parents. Infact,they took a good care of me ,I don't know whether my own parents could have given me that much care.Still.it pains deep in my heart to know I am an unwanted child to my parents".

"Nandini,love is not a commodity.It happens means it happens. I may be a businessman ,but I am a human too. You are not accountable for your parents' decision.I will support you through thick and thin by being a pillar of strength.Now say deal or no deal? Chandra looks deep into her eyes.

" Don't you feel it is necessary to talk to my foster father?".

" He will accept. He is a gentleman.Common say me your answer Nandini?".

" Deal ".Nandini smiles coyly.

" If that the case,we have to enact a lot of drama Nandini

"Why?"Nandini in a confused state of mind.

"My ex Fatherinlaw is a devil .He will create obstacles. So we have to act as though we don't know each other. He can be easily fooled as he has a greed of land. Shukla will entice him somehow . You come to Delhi on the pretext of working in Matrix,there it will be easier for us to trace your lost family.We will have to dilly dolly till tribal festival in Manali. We can get married somehow on that day.

"You are a perfect businessman. After marriage, will you spend night with me or directly we go to adopt children?" Nandini jokingly.

"A nice try Nandini. We can always plan children.That is your choice.Chandra taking a sip of coffee.

"Thanks for giving me an option. Nandini retorted him back for which he just smiled.

"Will your mother accept? "Nandini asked

"I know my mother. Infact we know all the story which you told us.Thanks to money power and my mother only gave this idea to propose you.She likes you very much. Crazy isn't it Chandra smirked

"Romba suttam". Nandini exclaimed.

This ff is over. I mean with this chapter Phase 1 of the ff is end.

Blossom is my first complete ff . Somehow I meandered to the end of part 1. I myself could find my writing and thinking drastically improved from first to last chapter.

Phase 2 or sequel is very much on the cards,But where and when and how is only known God.In the sequel we will deal with how Nandini finds her lost family,her mother,father,how she keeps Helen at Bay . new characters will be introduced .

Nandini will be giving birth to children etc. I thought of dragging all those chapters in this phase 1 itself. But dont know how long readers will be interested to know this or I have my own apprehension whether I will get some time to complete it.more than that inactivity of this forum is pushing me hard to at least hold the remaining readers to make them read the ff.

Lets take a break.Let us pray for safe delivery for Nandini and recovery of Vishnugupt. We will wait for Nandini and Chandrasekhar to enjoy their moments fullest without any hurdles. Wont we wait?
