My dear Shailaja,

Most of your readers, and you yourself, might be surprised at what I am going to say, but the fact is that I do not see your Chandragupt as being at all cruel here. Ill-judged yes, and he makes a major error in his assessment of the situation as he will not take the trouble to ascertain the facts of the case. But cruel? No.

Let us just tabulate the points about his state of mind.

- He is shocked when he finds Chanakya's letter, and immediately concludes that the softening on Nandini's part (in the snankaksh) was due to pity, which he naturally resents deeply.

- He is then dismayed and distraught when Nandini goes into something like an epileptic fit when he approaches her. And this after having voluntarily bathed him the day before, and hugged him unreservedly to boot. He is fully justified in thinking that she had led him on deliberately in order to then spurn him and humiliate him.

He knows already that he has fallen in love with her, and this love is for him now like a poisoned chalice.

- His is not just a male ego, it is now an imperial one, and I did not think Nandini would be able to placate him with a clever sloka or pleas for time. I was proved right.

-Now what does he do? The most predictable thing in the world: he is now katti with Nandini and does not want to give her the time of the day, not matter what blandishments she tries out, as with her attempts at a conversation during the first part of the journey.

-He is even more infuriated when he concludes that Nandini has sneaked into the contingent accompanying him to Rajnagari, with the explicit aim of wheedling him out of his anger. This only hardens his resolve to show the scheming female who, as he sees it, is trying to play fast and loose with him, exactly where she gets off.

Everything he does during the journey flows directly from the above. That Nandini was really ill is something he does not know, so he can hardly be blamed for ignoring it. Yes, he might have investigated the situation, by responding to her two calls to him from her palki, but when one is katti with someone whom you now see as your greatest emotional weakness, you do not give in so easily and forgive that person.

In this context, the passage in your last chapter where Chandragupt plays with the wick of the lamp and singes his finger was superb.

A mistake becomes a serious one, or not, depending on its consequences. Right now, Chandragupt's deliberate neglect of Nandini has had very bad consequences because she was already unwell. If she had not fallen ill, it would hardly have mattered anything like as much as it does now.

Now of course, once the fact of her being seriously ill comes out, he melts like a blob of wax in a flame and careens off to look after her. He will find (a) Arjun there ahead of him, and having made all the arrangements and (b) Nandini possibly still delirious and unable to respond to anything Chandragupt might now blurt out in an agony of self-condemnation.

Both will be salutary developments. He needed that sharp kick in the seat of his dhoti. But he cannot be crucified as a cruel man approaching monster status!

However, no matter how angry he is with Nandini, he is very wrong on one count, and deserves a very hard rap on the knuckles for that. For him to ignore her in private was one thing. For him to fail to introduce her to his hosts was quite another, and totally unacceptable in a king visiting another.

It was not just his insulting one of his queens, it was also an unthinking piece of stupidity. After all, Nandini's status was bound to come out very soon, and what then would the royal family of Rajnagari have thought about Maharaja Chandragupt, who failed to observe the most basic norms of proper behaviour vis a vis his wedded wife, and treated her, in public, like a non-person? Nothing very flattering, you can be sure! By his foolish and petulant behaviour, Chandragupt lets himself and his family down badly in front of another royal family whose alliance they were seeking.

As for your Nandini, she is admirable throughout. I loved the way in which, even at the height of her sense of desolation and of being abandoned by Chandragupt, she stills clings to that blue angavastram of his, and feels comforted when she wraps herself up in it.

Coming to your tantalising title, humein to yahan koyi chhaon nahin dikh raha hai, sirf dhoop hi dhoop hai!

Shyamala Aunty

Dear Readers,

I have updated the next chapter. Many readers felt that Chandra was cruel and insensitive in the previous chapter. If that is so, I must warn that he is maha-cruel here, though in a thoughtless way. My friend Avantika was expecting a Valentine's Day Treat. But I must warn before hand that there is nothing even remotely romantic anywhere. It is extremely painful. I too felt the same while writing. But poised as the story is at the present moment, such moments cannot be logically included. What Chandra needs at this point is a jolt out of his cold shouldering, indifference, and complacence. And that is what he gets. So, I am off for the present. I will not be able to send the PMs now. Maybe, I will do that later on when I am free.

Shailaja.

Chapter Twenty-Eight: Dhoop aur Chaon

Dear Aunty,

Thank you! I knew that this was the stand you were going to take. I wasn't surprised. This was my reasoning also when I visualized this chapter and Chandragupt's reactions. The maha-cruel was just by the way! In a way I was simply echoing what many of my readers were feeling about Chandra's behavior. My opinion about him too falls in the category of thoughtless or ill judged.

I wouldn't at all have taken this line in depicting Chandragupt if I was not absolutely convinced about it. For that matter, Nandini never once accuses him of anything. That ought to tell that she does not hold him responsible for everything. She recognizes her part too in this issue being blown to monstrous proportions. However she is going to stop short of calling out to him the third time, fourth time, or endlessly in the hope that he would listen. Her self-respect does not permit that.

I guess the only reason why many readers find Chandra a bit cruel is because they love and empathize with Nandini. They see where she is coming from. Chandragupt being a bit of a complex character, they are unable to put themselves in his shoes and see how much he has been bruised by this entire experience. He has deeply fallen in love with someone, and she either plays hot or cold, pities him, or goes into involuntary shudders the minute he comes near her, or does all of these things. What is he supposed to make out of it?

You were perfectly right Aunty! His is a bruised male imperial ego; it cannot be placated so easily. It is his emotional defense mechanism and his way of dealing with the situation. The other point about any action being considered bad based on the consequences is also very valid. Here Nandini's illness makes this entire thing look bad. In different circumstances, it would not have been considered so bad or cruel.

His behavior in not introducing Nandini is the one which really has to be condemned. It was washing dirty linen in public which is absolutely not done. So I am also on the same page with you regarding Chandragupt. I love my protagonists grey, flawed and imperfect as they are. I enjoyed reading every bit of this review. I was glad that you too were thinking and judging on similar lines. It seemed as though I was listening to my own perceptions in your beautiful and evocative words as I was reading this post. Here it is all Dhoop but in the next chapter the Chaon will come(Arjun).

Hello Shailu.. Back after a long period.. and it did take some time for me to complete the pending chapters..

The story is progressing beautifully.. MUs creating rifts between the couple, who inspite of being in love with each other, is unaware of how to accept the feelings and take their relation to the next level..

Yaa Chandra wasn't too kind with nandni in the previous chapter but his broken heart and disappointment is justified coz he is a male.. and guys are often nadaan😆 The women lot is more sensible and matured, mostly, I believe so.. He was in the illusion that nandni has no feelings in her heart for him, so he decided to keep himself away from the girl..

Although chapter 28 is not a VDay wala special romantic chapter but it was too good.. Nandini calling for Chandra while feeling sick was wonderfully written and could be vividly imagined..
I was guessing that she would fall seriously ill and only then Chandra ke dimaag ki batti jalegi😆
Chandra had to come running to her..
this chapter had no such sweet Chandni scene but you have very cleverly set the grounds for some interesting CN realization sequence, making the readers wanting for more and eagerly waiting for you to update the next part..

So when are we getting the next chapter?? No no I dont demand you to hurry up.. please take your time and write down.. Its going to be damn interesting and good, I am sure..
Ayega re ayega.. chandra ke dil mein paschatap ayega😆 that why was he not beside her when she us so much in need of him..

Loved the update a lot.. and all your previous chapters too..
The snan scene from one of the previous chapters was good.. and the convo between purohit and chankya where the purohit was trying to read and match Chandni's horoscopes was another very interesting part for me.. I know these kinds of predictions were very much in practice among the saints and purohits in those days whereas in recent times people dont have much faith in all these but I will be honest with you.. I really have interest in astrology and wanted to study the subject too but my parents never let me waste my time behind them..😆😆 anyways in your story everything was so good and dreamy..
Thanks and congrats on having so many readers of the very popular FF of the CN forum "Written By Destiny And Etched In Blood"..

Glad you liked all the pending chapters. There are very few writers who are writing creative pieces on our CN forum regularly. So the readers are not much spoilt for choice like IPKKND forum, or JA forum. Except Stuti, Avantika and me all the rest stopped writing or updating regularly. I must say Stuti writes very beautifully. She is one talented kid. After reading her, one would never be able to guess her age. And I never knew my FF was famous and popular. But if you say so, I must accept it.

The story has taken an interesting turn, and next chapter is going to be very interesting I guess. Chandra has to realize that the path that he has taken to pacify him and his ego, will only bury him deeper in the pit, and I feel that realization period has started.

Yes, Chandra's realization begins in the next chapter. Loved reading this comment!

One more day, Avantika! I am writing it presently. Though I wouldn't like to raise the expectations, I hope the Chaon will be worth the wait! I was liking whatever I wrote. So it means you guys are also going to like it in all probability.

So this FF does have a lot of silent readers. Anyways happy to know that though I would be happier still if a few of them broke that silence. It is encouraging to know your work is being read and appreciated. Kudos to all the creative writers of IPKKND and JA forums who kept the stories alive even after the actual shows ended.
