Wow Kaana that's quite a lot to take in one swallow 👏 Nevertheless well thought out arguments. The CVs might be laying the foundation now for Ashok's eventual bent towards Buddhism.

I don't know what to think. Your points are very well taken---if this was simply a debate about Varna system.

However, the CVs have the job of depicting a 14 year old Ashok who has very little formal training, but also has immense natural ability and wisdom. His performance should be impressive, but not what it might have been if he had been under Chanakya and other Acharyas' training from early childhood. The story also demands that Ashok, while performing impressively, narrowly lose this particular competition!

All in all, I think CVs were in a no-win situation and made a decent compromise.

Dear Kaana, thanks for the PM. Sorry I could not hop into the forum any sooner as I was totally busy during the weekend. The post is great. Will write my few cents alter in the day as I am in office and can't afford more time away from work (Monday). 😉

Interesting post Kaana. How and why a person is born into a particular caste or family or why he leads a particular life is more complicated then that, don't you think 😉

First of all, great post Kaana. This has the potential to turn into the most interesting discussion in the forum.
Before I begin, I'll point out that what Ashok said, "One's cast should shape up based on the vocation chosen by him", is similar to your contention about our Varna identities in our next births depending on the tendencies we display in THIS birth. Ashok argued against the rigidity of the caste system. Think about it, if one cannot strive to choose his own path without being tied down by impediments in the form of social conventions, then how is he/she supposed to express themselves enough to merit a birth into a 'suitable' caste in their next birth?

Btw, the example you gave of Karna would invoke a 'Nature vs. Nurture' debate, which I won't go into on here. However, a true Kshatriya with fighter instincts would never give away his kavach and kundala to Kunti.

Ashok could've given one example which would've decimated the basis of the caste system in ONE go: The Nanda Dynasty was Shudra by birth. Had Caste been synonymous with internalised instinct and preference, the Nandas would not have risen to prominence. 😆
