SLB's Heeramandi was not a documentarysmiley36.

There is a thing called fictional world-building in films/web-series.

He took some aspects of real world and created his own interpretation in an extravagant manner.

Even kids these days know that his films have nothing to do with reality.smiley36

Oh, I won't expect documentary accuracy and I support that Bhansali has a quite unique vision and creates magic smiley27

When I write about the story then I strictly mean the story h e wants to tell - as fictional as he wants it to tell. To me, it's always the story told in the movie that counts and I want to be able to relate to and be captured by.

Still, privately, I'm interested in historical reports, just for my own information...and if a movie incites me to do so, then it's even a bonus. smiley1

That's some interesting info but Heeramandi is largely fictional as far I’m aware.

Sure, it touches on real events like British colonization and the courtesan world, but it's all shaped up by SLB's directorial vision. The meticulous attention to aesthetics in his movies has its own audience.

It’s another story that I wish he had channeled some of that energy into the storyline itself. It starts off as a compelling internal drama within Heeramandi, but instead all of that fizzles out and ends as something else altogether.

Heera Mandi is not a fictional place, it’s a real location since the times of Mughals if I ain’t wrong, housing hundreds of courtesans at that time, who used to entertain the kings and royals by dancing and performing for them. During that time, it was known as the “Shahi mohalla”.In the modern history period, the area was known as the red light area of the Lahore district, and the name changed to “Heera Mandi or the diamond market”, now all of that has disappeared and the place is filled with small shops and markets of course in present day. Bhansali fused all of these historical periods together I think and showed such overly glamorised, grandeur sets in his locations, and a dramatised story, but that has always been his modus operandi. smiley36

Bhansali really tricked us all. I watched Heeramandi expecting historical accuracy, but instead, I got 8 hours of a fantasy world of tawaifs full of heavy curtains and grand mujras. Definitely not watching his movies again. Thank you for opening our eyes to the real Heeramandi, sharban.

Oh absolutely, that's SLB for you! Personally, I had no clue about Heeramandi or its historical significance until this show came along. So, I only have him to thank for both the real and the make-believe world he created. smiley36

When has he ever done that?

That's what I meant...a feature movie is a writer's/director's treatement of some historical fact (for whatever reasons, btw.)...yet with so many information possibilities at hand one can educate oneself if there is interest.

I won't watch the series as the information I got here and through other sources are far more interesting (in my feeling). And I'm not curious enough about this Bhansali series. As I'm not a 'serial-watcher' I prefer more indepth one like Jubelee, for example.
