Correct...but that was because of the sheer enormity of the Chinese market allowed because of the good impression Aamir left to the respective Chinese ministery and Chinese audience with 3 Idiots.

All the international records Wikipedia lists for Dangal are still valuable but solely because of 9000 screens and the success in China (where most Hindi movies never will land...just mentioned from my side for a fair comparison).

If one deducts the more than 1200 cr gross made in the Chinese market, the international gross collection comes to a more competitive number vis-a-vis other internationally successful Indian movies.

Huh? Aamir opened the Chinese market for Bollywood films. And he has spent a lot of effort promoting and creating interest in a local audience there, film by film. Till it all came together and exploded with Dangal. Saying the film is only successful because it was given a wide release in China is wild. Many films regularly open on a large number of screens in China and regularly bomb.

And for what it's worth, the Chinese market didn't give a wide release to Dangal. It was doing so well in its initial release that they kept adding it to screens because the per-theater average was insane. That's how the Chinese market works. The screen count is extremely dynamic. Mission impossible lost most of its screens before its first weekend was over this year.

3 Idiots is also probably one of the most popular Bollywood films for non-Indians. It was massive in most East Asian markets. Films going beyond NRI audiences would always be more impressive as far as tge international market is concerned.

I wonder why China’s box office is ignored . It’s not that only Dangal was successful, some other movies like Bajrangi and Hindi medium have worked there too .

I agree with you, MH, except:

"Saying the film is only successful because it was given a wide release in China is wild."

I didn't wrote it, so don't twist my words, please. I made a statement I had read and didn't , in no way, demean Aamir's work to get a foot into the Chinese market.

I'm also - in no way - jealous of his succes (To me, it doesn't matter if Dangal remains this recordbreaking movie for as long as humans exist and watch movies in theatres and care for boxoffices.)

To me, it's only a matter of fairness when comparing movies relative to the international market. The countries of the East-Asian markets (e.g. Japan, China, Hongkong, Korea) are still not 'regular' international markets for Indian movies, imo.

Twist? You all can't explicitly imply things and then try to get out of it by saying you never wrote it.

Indian films routinely do well in China and Japan. They are regular markets.

Your thread title says SRK is the only Indian actor touching international benchmarks, which is just not true, when Aamir and Rajamouli have both had more successful outings. And both of those are more impressive to me, because they crossed over to Non-NRI audiences. Or are international benchmarks only applicable in countries SRK does well in?

No clue why except Aamir, the whole industry treats it as an afterthought . Even at the much smaller 25% producer cut, a lot of these movies have made more money in China than they make in India.

Aamirs Secret Superstar was a big hit there also. But it failed in India

But it doesn't get ignored...it only should left aside when people give in to their comparison-enthusiasm...

International success should just tell something about the markets that one can distribute a movie. China does only accept a restrict number of Indian movies, so do Japan and Korea, if my informations are right.

So, no problem to compare the all-India net market, but less easy for the gross international market.

The international market with almost no desi/arabic population is another market than the one with high part of desi/arabic population.

So, one can compare - e.g. - the acceptance/success in the European , Australian and North American market, but should not, imo, compare the global market incl. China (China isn't 'global' and a collection more than the half of the rest of the world is telling about an extraordinary acceptance of Dangal in China, but Dangal hadn't it in the 'usual' markets.)

Did Aamir got distributed more of his movies in China? Yes (Dangal, Secret Superstar, a shortened TOH)... PK, LSC only released in Honkong, 3 Idiots only in Korea.

Edit: Btw... My Name is Khan was the premier Indian movie that got shown in China after 30 years of nothing...

Surpeise, surprise! My thread title has a question mark, dear MH, which means that this statement is open to be questioned... and yes, you had changed the meaning of my writing when refering to it - into what you thought it would mean... (but didn't do so)

And another no for your assertion that the Chinese and Japanese market are "regular" markets for Indian movies...you can verify it yourself (but I guess you won't...it's easier to do an assertion not backed by facts one knows or has researched).
