Will keep quiet. Peddling lies and misinformation is cool nowadays.
Hi,
It would be helpful if you could post your take on the breakdown as well . What @iamluvbolly said sounded sensible to me about Disney being the producers+ distributors but I also read a tweet that this needs 250cr to get the hit tag. So I am now curious to how this whole thing works.
And just so that nobody misinterprets, I am not a hater. I genuinely want this movie to do well for many reasons and I am asking this purely out of curiosity.
That's not how this works. You transfer-price it. Fox can't just give it off to Disney, Star Television and HotStar for free. You estimate the market valuation and charge your sister studios accordingly. Otherwise they would just sell it to some other studio and distribution service. If it holds on Monday, it will easily break-even.Originally posted by: IAmLuvBolly
Movie is made with a budget of 410cr. Disney is both producer and distributor so there’s no distributors’ sale. Disney also has their own OTT platform so there’s no revenue from OTT sales. The producers have to recover the 410 cr minimum. Everything the movie earns is split 50/50 between producer and exhibitors in India. In U.S. the contracts are a little different so let’s assume that it’s 25/75 in favor of producers and let’s assume it’s that way for all the overseas earnings. How much will it earn overseas ultimately? Around 100cr net which means Disney gets 75cr of it. Let’s round it up and say Disney gets 100cr from overseas markets. It’s still leaves it with 310 to recover and going by 50/50 split it will have to make over 600cr to just break even. I know the movie is bringing in big numbers now, but it’s way too early to assume it will go above 600cr for any amount of profitability.
All that being said, this weekend’s numbers make it very easy for marketing teams and PRs to manipulate the narrative to call this a hit even when it may not be.
Not to mention, money in films like this is on merchandising and sequels. If the kids like it, it will make a lot of money.
You mean more than the films budget? People here have their own math going, they think a 400cr movie will be a hit if it makes 200cr🤣 that’s where we are at in humanity and basic mathit need at least 600 cr to be hit

Typically producers sell the movie to distributors and then distributors have their deals with exhibitors (theater owners). How much profit the distributors make from the price they paid for the movie determines whether the movie is a hit or a flop. In this case Disney is distributing it themselves so they didn’t need to sell it to a separate distributor. So they have to make a profit based on the money they spent on Brahmstra which was its 410cr budget.
Disney has its own OTT platforms (Disney+, Hulu, and Hotstar) so as producers they don’t need to sell it to another OTT platform like Amazon or Netflix to eventually stream Brahmstra.
I hope this made sense.
The point is exhibitors paid them to buy the movie rights. They're not selling it to other OTT platforms because they want to release it on their own platform. Win-win situation for both .
You can't say they're making no money from OTT or theatrical rights.
Seriously, like where is the logic?Originally posted by: Shaitan-Haiwan

If a movie that cost 410 crore becomes a hit at 250 crore, that means that Thugs of Hindustani that cost 330 crore and made 335 crore ww is a blockbuster.

Always you need a double to recover, if a film makes 200cr the makers only gets 100cr from it. As things stand the film may gate about 100cr overseas, and digitals and Tv money can only go to 100cr at best. so basically the film need 400cr at BO in India to recover the cost.
