I watched it and to put it simply I liked it. I have to admit I have not read reviews, I try not to until I watch, of course you cannot help the trailers or the comments that come before, due to that I get pollution...so honestly I was expecting a copy of The Korean: An Affair (1998) but Gehraiyaan stands on its own, and it does so well, it is an urban story, one that can happen anywhere, you know it is India because they tell you, but this film had none of the typical things that make up 99% of Hindi films, no super hero against 20 goons fights, no religion, no dirty scraggly critters, and specially NO grandiloquent preaching of good against evil, it was just a metropolis with people with issues, very mundane issues, with all players trying to survive, get ahead, use others because you have to sometimes, just like real life. The intimate scenes all were filmed well and you do not see any extra body parts (they leave it up to dirty minds). It was tastefully done, I even appreciate that there was not much grunting or sounds during the scenes, everything got covered by waves or music. Most of the audience 10 and up has seen that and much, much more.
So basically I think that they accomplished what they set out to do with this very grown up film. I even liked the somber coloring (a lot like Korean). However I guess everyone kind of adds or takes away from a story as they see fit and people try to psycho analyze the characters and create a convoluted second story...Why I do not know? The story was well told, so there should be no more to add. The house is not even in the town they mention so it is NOT about locality or places in India and there had to be intimate scenes because it is a big part of the story, that is all the two leads had, that is how they connected, they talked after the sex and in fact the things they told each other were not the reality that the rest of us saw, but their version of reality, she did not even know the truth and he cared for her, but he wanted it all and bit more than what he could chew...s..t happens...
No one was a saint and no one was satan, they are just people using eachother and dealing with things that happen, a real slice of life in an urban set up, with actors acting in a modern city, being common and not encased into an ethnic way of behaving. Did they use F-fire cracker word too much...maybe (where I come from, everyone cusses and F...is a multiuse word,-So is not a bomb anymore) maybe they could have cut some of the Fs off like when the dude was proposing but hey...it sounds to me like it is used a lot...Was this movie a Masterpiece for all ages, no. It is just a movie about life.
Again I will repeat I was pleasantly surprised, DP done Good! Very good, the rest as well, all of them should receive their deserved applause.
I am sooooo happy Hindi cinema is growing up, not every movie has to have in your face ethnicity, plus brake out in a song and dance in the middle of nowhere nonsense scenes the rest of the world never gets that...They maybe have decided to enter the world market and make films any joe can understand.
...Now all we need is for the public to get going and grow up too...watch them or not, like them or not, but quit trying to create Gods and Goddesses out of entertainers, there's new movies coming out tomorrow...there is always hope the next one will have a praying, bowing or kneeling super hero that beats up 20 goons and the girls shake their bom boms.
p.s. I like almost all actors (only kangana is disgusting, she will never pass the smell test) so I judge on the work and plot not on personality or fandom...Did you know there are great Asian films (yeah the other Asia)...if you liked this one you will enjoy The Affair....
