In 01 or 02. The trailer never appealed to me, so I never saw it. But a friend who loved the movie convinced me to watch it on DVD with him.

I was unimpressed. The special effects and fight sequences were well ahead of their time. The bullet time is groundbreaking. So in a certain technical aspect, the movie is special.

Storywise, it was a slog for me. I found it dull and uninteresting. I couldn't get invested in it at all. Perhaps one reason is that I disagree with the film's philosophy itself. I would take the blue pill.

Like Cypher and the steak - it doesn't matter if the steak isn't real. What matters is that the steak brings joy. If reality is pain and suffering but ignorance is bliss, is reality really ethical? Does it matter that this life I live, the words I type are because of an omniscient deity (God), a race of artificially intelligent machines (the Matrix), or just a random probability in the cosmos? It is the most absurd premise that has everyone behaving as if they are the Kants or Humes of their generation. Maybe it appeals to people, but for me it's meh.

It isn’t fair to judge the original against all the stuff that came after. In fact some of the stuff that came after may never have been greenlit at all if Matrix hadn’t opened the door. Tobey Maguire Spiderman came in 2002, Ironman which really launched the Marvel universe didn’t come out until 2008. So if you watched the Matrix after you have seen a few Marvel films I get why you were underwhelmed and all I can say is if you had been there watching it in a theater in 1999 it would have been a very very different experience.

Having said that I agree the sequels were all downhill and the Matrix 4 is 10% nostalgia and 90% meh. Even that doesn’t take away the impact and legacy of the original.

I think you're making an assessment of whether people are impressed by movies or not based on the special effects. It is not completely wrong. I think people used to some modern-day visuals may be unimpressed by Matrix. But it is an unfair assumption that all Marvel fans care for only visuals.

Storytelling matters too. That is why the middle trilogy of Star Wars is so reviled. Despite being technologically superior, it didn't have the heart of the original trilogy.
