In 01 or 02. The trailer never appealed to me, so I never saw it. But a friend who loved the movie convinced me to watch it on DVD with him.
I was unimpressed. The special effects and fight sequences were well ahead of their time. The bullet time is groundbreaking. So in a certain technical aspect, the movie is special.
Storywise, it was a slog for me. I found it dull and uninteresting. I couldn't get invested in it at all. Perhaps one reason is that I disagree with the film's philosophy itself. I would take the blue pill.
Like Cypher and the steak - it doesn't matter if the steak isn't real. What matters is that the steak brings joy. If reality is pain and suffering but ignorance is bliss, is reality really ethical? Does it matter that this life I live, the words I type are because of an omniscient deity (God), a race of artificially intelligent machines (the Matrix), or just a random probability in the cosmos? It is the most absurd premise that has everyone behaving as if they are the Kants or Humes of their generation. Maybe it appeals to people, but for me it's meh.
