As an actor - no.

As a star - yes.

Just because she is not as active or in limelight as other actresses of 90s and 2000s and has not been looking as youthful or fit as other actresses of that era, people have begun to assume she did not have it in her at all and undermine her past accomplishments as well.

Anyday she has MORE hits, critically acclaimed and iconic performances as an actor than any other actress from that era. Black is still the pinnacle of how far an actor has pushed herself in Hindi cinema. Rani challenged herself the way no other commercial actress does. Others played it safe till date doing happy go lucky or drama/romance roles all the time or a glam diva. While Rani consistently challenged herself and proved naysayers wrong. She was called unsuitable for a cop role yet she has done good job in Mardaani. She was accused of doing bechari bahu roles but she proved them all wrong when she did films like NOKJ, Mardani, Black. For that matter her breakthrough film Ghulam is anything but a sanskari bahu.

She is easily the best actor- performer of her generation. Just that she never hardsells herself or harps on her achievements. She has constantly won polls on best actress, has her performances listed among all time best performances in history of Indian cinema. She was called Khandala girl, Rani Hindustani and almost unanimously the most requested actress in Jai Jawan. All used to call her fav actress. She remained #1 for 3 years in mid 2000s - something which is hard for actresses to sustain for consecutive years nowadays. She won lot of Sabse Favourite Kaun awards back then.

She was mocked for her height and voice, mocked for her skin colour as she is not typical fair skinned girl but she overcame all taunts and odds to succeed as an actor and attain both popularity and critical acclaim.

It is unfortunate she had to reject Lagaan and Monsoon Wedding due to lack of dates or else she would have had more prestigious films in her repertoire.

Her downfall after KANK, sticking to YRF and rumours on personal life cannot dent her accomplishments she achieved at her peak in early 2000s.

Probably if she was into PR or did a lot of ads or was active on social media, or did reality shows, maybe people would not undermine her stature the way they do now because nowadays people assume stardom on basis of mere visibility.

As an actor she is rated fine. Her awards were well EARNED unlike others who often got awards for heck of it or bought awards or got for merely attending the function.

But as a star, yes she is underrated and her worth, achievements were slowly undermined over the years.

Her interviews are so so. She is not very eloquent. This is why people often criticise her or she trends for wrong reasons nowadays. Nor has she maintained herself much. Hardly does any ads, is not on social media.

Lack of PR perhaps leads to her being underrated as a star.

I totally agree with you !

Without naming anyone , some of the mediocre performances of PR friendly actresses of the 2000 era are touted as iconic roles today , I find that ridiculous and totally unfair . It’s a wonder though that even after proving her mettle as an actress post wedding and baby especially with Hichki which IMO was GOAT , why she doesn’t promote herself. I know there are enough people who respect her as an actress, even the intelligent gen z twats appreciate her for her acting and versatility.

Her interviews are actually very grounded and simple but she’s so relatable and grounded that the new folks might find that boring and unattractive. Personally, I have nothing to complain though , she just called me “sweetypie” in a recent fan comment interview she did with Nayandeep. 😜

I could never watch this myself for some strange reasons but my friends told me that she called me a sweetypie . Now I understand why some actors can never see their own performances lmao .

Rani was never good at self promotions and PR which is why many flop heroines also kept grabbing headlines when she was clearly #1 in mid 2000s, particularly 2004-2005.

Nor has she used cheap tactics or publicity stunts and controversies to keep herself in news. Like making communal comments or leaking MMS with some BF or some much publicised affair.

She knows what she has achieved and is married to the most powerful man in the industry now, has a kid and has nothing to prove to anyone. She did good work in Mardaani, Hichki.

Others are just jealous why other actresses do not get work any more or films with scripts tailor made for them where the heroine dominates the show. Nobody stopped their husbands from producing films for them now.

Rani has been accepted by audience in these films. It is not like Adi just gave her films for heck of it. Atleast she does films that focus on her and is not a flowerpot in films of bigger stars or multi starrers.

PR can influence only online. Not real life. Rants on few forums or social media online never determine worth of an actor or a star.

Rani is a legend and her name will always be there as best actress of her generation and no mention of 2000s is complete without her. She has never done faltu tactics to stay in news at any cost unlike other attention seeking celebs.

Congrats to you. You are lucky to have got a reply from her.

Rani's mistakes were listening to her parents and her husband then BF Adi. She blindly did these silly comedies in the early 2000s at the behest of her parents...Poor girl was just working to support her whole family...then after she became number one based on the films she herself signed, she started listening to Adi who thinks he knows everything and is the right person to advise everyone!

All the films she did with YRF after listening to Adi were bombs! None worked after her last hit which was KANK! It looked like Adi wanted her to stay on with YRF and its a bit funny considering when she was working there, she wasn't liked at all by his parents.

She should have utilized her time at the top to choose the best scripts instead of sticking to one PH only!

And no...

She is not underrated at all! People recognize her talent...its just her downfall is her own doing!

No but if her hubby was not yash chopra son in early 2000s she would not have gone so high

Priety and Ash her competitors could not go so high for lack of god fathers

She got undue advantage because of her family and hubby connections
