Is Rani Underrated?

Nope she is pretty overrated in my opinion.

From which angle is she underrated?

She was the number 1 actress for 3 years in a row (2004-2006). She was the #2 actress in 2002 (after Ash) and 2003 (after Preity), and somehwere in top 5 in 2007 as well. In fact she was considered an A-lister right from KKHH days and remained in the limelight until 2007 or so (nearly a decade). She was everyone's favorite actress in the mid 2000s. She won the Sabsey Fav Kaun heroine 4 times in a row from 2004-2007 (a record for any actress).

She worked with all the top actors and directors of her time in her prime. She worked with SRK in 4 films in 4 years at a stretch (2003 - CC, 2004 - VZ, 2005 - Paheli, 2006 - KANK). She worked with Saif on 3 films in that timeframe too. She also worked with Yash Chopra (2004), Sanjay Leela Bhansali (2005) and Karan Johar (2006) in a small timeframe. She was the lead in every top film made in 2003-2006 time.

In terms of critical acclaim, she was the critics darling at that time (and still remains so). In terms of awards, she has 2 best actress, 3 supporting actress and 2 critics award from Filmfare. She had monopoly over the awards in the 2004-2005 times. Pretty much all her films post 2011 worked at box office and earned her several accolades.

Do any poll (popularity or critics choice), and her name will be there amongst the top actresses of all times. In fact Filmfare put her at #4 actress of all times, right after Madhuri, Sridevi and a few others. Box office india puts her at #2 star of the 2000s, right after Ash. She was in the Filmfare power list quite a number of times in her prime, being the only female actress to make it to the list (yeah, neither Ash nor Katrina nor PC could make it at that time).

So not sure how she can be considered underrated when people do rate her very highly - both as an actress as well as a star. She may not be as popular today, but that's mostly because she barely does commercial cinema, plus very little media appearances. But people do rate her very highly everywhere, so she is not underrated by any means.

As a dancer , yes…she’s not as highly praised as Madhuri or ash for her dancing but she’s pretty graceful (except she’s short so it does not look at aesthetic)

As an actor …haaaalll no

She plays either

1 the crying yash raj / dharma films bechari

2 the “trying hard to be glamorous and funny” roles

3 mardaani

All of which I find her mediocre in
Mardaani is probably better out of the first two

Unpopular opinion, I too feel she is quite underrated. Only because I feel like she deserved a lot more - better films and longer stay at number 1 rank. She has this amazing talent to mould herself into any character she plays and it’s sad how people don’t appreciate her enough for it. I mean I can’t see a Rani in any character she played, I only could see that character she played. A little sad she went down post Kank but glad she got her second innings. However wish she was given roles outside her banner for the sheer talent she possess. Also missing her pairing with SRK, would love to see them together onscreen again. Like another member mentioned, I also believe she is extremely underrated in beauty and dance department. I find her to be exotically beautiful (in her hey days ofcourse) but hardly appreciated for it by the masses. Likewise, she can really dance so well, amazing grace she had, but never got the same recognition like Aishwarya, Madhuri or even Katrina got for their dancing. Based on all this, yes in my opinion, I think she was underrated - under appreciated.

She is rightly rated. If there is such a term 😂

Rani has always been acknowledged as one of the finest actors of her time by pretty much everyone in the industry..... sooooo, no, she's not underrated in that regard.

As an actress? Yes. I find her very talented and better than a lot of actresses of her time.
