Most successful Bollywood actors 1990 – 19994 years ago

by Indicine Team

2 min read

We finally have the analysis of the most successful actors between 1990 – 1999. It’s a decade that marked the rise of the three Khans, while Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar were growing their fanbase and delivering quite a few hits in between.

Salman Khan leads in every category – highest net collections, success ratio, hit ratio and the best average per film. He also has the highest grosser and the most watched film of the 90s in Sooraj Barjatya’s Hum Aapke Hain Kaun.

Salman and Shah Rukh are the only two actors to average more than 10 crore plus per film.

Most number of films:

  • Akshay Kumar – 42 films
  • Ajay Devgn – 33 films
  • Salman Khan – 29 films
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 28 films
  • Aamir Khan – 23 films

Total Net Collections for each actor between 1990 – 1999:

  • Salman Khan – 375 crore
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 327 crore
  • Ajay Devgn – 221 crore
  • Akshay Kumar – 196 crore
  • Aamir Khan – 186 crore

Average net box office collections per film between 1990 – 1999

  • Salman Khan – 12.9 crore
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 11.7 crore
  • Aamir Khan – 8.1 crore
  • Ajay Devgn – 6.7 crore
  • Akshay Kumar – 4.7 crore

Success Ratio i.e Above Average or better

  • Salman Khan – 52%
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 39%
  • Ajay Devgn – 36%
  • Aamir Khan – 35%
  • Akshay Kumar – 24%

Hit Ratio i.e Hit or Better

  • Salman Khan – 45%
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 32%
  • Aamir Khan – 22%
  • Ajay Devgn – 18%
  • Akshay Kumar – 10%

Note: We haven’t included two prolific actors – Sunny Deol and Govinda – in the list. Deol was a superstar, even though he wasn’t very consistent at the box office. He had quite a few hugely successful films like Border, Darr, Zindi and Ghatak, just to name a few. Govinda delivered several hits with David Dhawan and was one of the most popular and successful actors of the 90s. We are currently in the process of retrieving data from old film magazines. We are also working with a well-known trade analyst to rectify the 90s data, which isn’t as accurate as we’d want it to be at the moment.

hit ratio sallu 45%

There is a reason why DDLJ is considered the all-time romantic movie by most people, and still running in maratha mandir. There is a reason why Salman played the guest role in KKHH, and SRK was the lead, there is a reason why SRK ends up slapping Salman in Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam 😆 and even in Karan Arjun, it was SRK and Kajol, whose pairing, was the hit pair. There is a reason why SRK ended up giving an award that he won, to criminal Salman, because criminal Salman begged him for an award, and the shameless criminal Salman walks on stages and takes it! 😆

Salman only managed to bounce back after a 10 year old flop phase with Dabangg, where he found his new fanbase of virgin men.

You have the point. If Sallu was a bigger star why he would he let director to create the scene where SRK slapped him. Thing to ponder.

There was also a scene where SRK brought a gun in him and Salman brushed it off like it was nothing and started laughing 😆

Most successful Bollywood Actors: 2000 – 2009 4 years ago

by Indicine Team

3 min read

This is a question that gets asked quite frequently in the weekly ‘Ask Indicine’ Question and Answer session. So to end the debate once and for all, we analyse the Top 6 most successful actors in the last decade.

Most number of films:

  • Akshay Kumar – 42 films
  • Ajay Devgn – 39 films
  • Salman Khan – 32 films
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 21 films
  • Hrithik Roshan – 14 films
  • Aamir Khan – 9 films

Total Net Collections for each actor between 2000 – 2009:

  • Akshay Kumar – 983 crore
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 678 crore
  • Aamir Khan – 585 crore
  • Salman Khan – 581 crore
  • Ajay Devgn – 557 crore
  • Hrithik Roshan – 481 crore

Average net box office collections per film between 2000 – 2009

  • Aamir Khan – 65 crore
  • Hrithik Roshan – 34.35 crore
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 32.29 crore
  • Akshay Kumar – 23.40 crore
  • Salman Khan – 18.15 crore
  • Ajay Devgn – 14.28 crore

Success Ratio i.e Above Average or better (probably the most important, because it’s the percentage of films that recovered investment)

  • Aamir Khan – 78%
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 67%
  • Hrithik Roshan – 43%
  • Akshay Kumar – 36%
  • Salman Khan – 31%
  • Ajay Devgn – 13%

Hit Ratio i.e Hit or Better

  • Aamir Khan – 67%
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 57%
  • Hrithik Roshan – 43%
  • Akshay Kumar – 26%
  • Salman Khan – 19%
  • Ajay Devgn – 10%

In conclusion, when it comes to Top 3 actors of the previous decade, it’s between Aamir, SRK, Hrithik and Akshay.

Shah Rukh maintained a very high success and hit ratio throughout the decade, even though he has featured in more than twice the number of films as Aamir.

Aamir’s stature and box office total grew quite significantly towards the end of the decade because of films like Ghajini and 3 Idiots. He didn’t have a release for four years between Dil Chahta Hai (August 2001) and Mangal Pandey (August 2005).

Salman was inconsistent, many of his films were huge disasters. As a solo star, he didn’t have much to show apart from a few films like No Entry, Partner, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya and Wanted.

Akshay enjoyed the best phase of his career in 2006 and 2007, when he delivered several back-to-back hit films. He tops the ‘total net collections’ for the decade. His average per film and success ratio isn’t too bad either.

Hrithik Roshan went through a career low after a stellar start to his career, but made a comeback and remained consistent after Koi Mil Gaya.

Ajay Devgn was poor throughout. Both his success and hit ratio were well below 15%. His hits were Bhoot, Masti, Golmaal and Golmaal Returns.
