Padmaavat was a Historical, Khilji did exist, he was not the anti hero, he was the villain, Queen Padmavati was the hero and she was portrayed as a heroic, brave character who wins at the end through her sacrifice of life

Biopics and Historicals were both trending last year, plus both movies had controversies attached to them which sells

I havent seen Simmba so cant comment on that but Im sure it was all Shetty's knack of making even the trashiest movies successful like he did with Golmaal series. It was an out and out masala entertainer which usually does well.

but Sanju the character was not a good person. He wasn't the hero, that we are known to have. Indian audience aren't used to watching heroes who do drugs while mom is dying, sleep with best friend's girl friend and basically be an asshole.

Audience already knew Sanju was a troublesome guy since his youth so they were not shocked to see him presented like that. Actually it was the controversial aspects of Sanjay's life, the lurid details that made it so fascinating for curious audience who were eager to know abt his life story. It was mainly the controversy that was the attraction of the movie plus Hirani knows how to present his story expertly,

well Ranveer's character was the main reason why movie got such huge WOM making 280 crores in box office despite opening at just 18 crores for such a big movie. It was running till 100 days in some theaters, now controversies don't make movies run for 100 days. And Deepika wasn't much praised by audience, and most of her praise came from from Deepika fans, but well Deepika fans praise her in everything even if she just sits, they will go, ''wow she sits so gracefully, nobody sits like our queen, I stan her''.

The main attraction was Khilji as the movie released, with everyone going 'Ranveer pura pagal hogaya hai'. His and Jim's antics were the most talked about among the audience.

But Khilji was still the villain, historically he was THE evil conqueror, audience expected him to be evil, so they enjoyed his OTT evilness...but they dont expect a hero to be evil or unpleasant

Its all abt audience expectations vs what they get, if they expect hero to be good hearted, noble, and get an obnoxious hero instead then they feel cheated and reject the movie Nobody expected the dwarf protagonist to be so obnoxious hence the reaction

On a serious note, he desperately wants something that would offer him three things, story, acting scope and VFx... He has got two aspects right with Fan and Zero.. Story is the only missing aspect.. Lets hope he finds that because my guy is pretty relentless in his love for VFx.. He ain't giving that up 😆
