Why did SRK make Zero?

So I continue to ask:
1) Apart from taking on a fresh challenge and do something that even Americans rejected to try (reducing a man and make him acting amongst and opposite others fitting in seamlessly as if he indeed is a short man), what could SRK have intrigued to play this character?
2) no further questions
3) Why would SRK like to deconstruct his image of a romantic hero? Is there probably more that he wants to deconstruct?

Do you can think about further reasons why SRK made Zero?

I am a SHE 😊. I don't want to upset 'sensitive fans' by adding this to my thread but: If you wish, you are welcome to copy/paste it there :) .

My opinion: He wanted to work with ALR because of TWM- I simply think SRK was a fan of ALR movies and wanted to experiment. He heard the 3 lines of he movie, liked the IDEA, and thought it's great opportunity to use his VFX company(as he's obsessed with this) and play such a different character.

Problem is H.Sharma lost it when he was asked to expand the plot and tried to blend all into one, fact that SRK might not have noticed. It's like Sharma SRK-ed the plot. He was trying to give it all kind of previous SRK movies vibes ..and also continue the narrative. (I think this is where people got confused..and where the movie got disjointed..there was DDLJ et all like referrences).

SRK may also be inclined to enjoy offbeat, quirky and 'out there' movies personally.. so maybe even when filming he was still inlove with the 'adventures' rather than stop and think how portrayal was done to make the character quite insufferable.

I think SRK is competitive and ambitious, maybe ruthless- he has to be to survive and succeed- but he oftentimes hides these under the charming persona... so he probably wanted something 'extraordinary' to get him back to the lead of the race.. But the problem was the story wasn't the right one for this to happen.

I am under no ilusion that SRK is not one to relax and give it all up. I am sure there is a lot of fight left in him.

Now all he needs is a GREAT script..a medium budget and less insuffereable character to play and all will change back to good ole' days.

Bold part #1: He wants to demolish his own image as a loverboy, hes 53, he cannot play Raj and Rahul like before, he wants to show different aspects of love, lust and obsession, like the fan's obsession for his idol, Bauaa's ego driven vengeful romance, or even the womanizer guide's protective attraction towards his client.

The writer Himanshu Sharma made Bauaa too offensive, obnoxious and an absolute heel for tricking Aafia into falling in love, sleeping with her, then abandoning her, ditching her at the altar. People who are saying he played the the same old romantic hero have no idea what they are talking about

And yes, that money throwing by Bauaa at his friends, that made me chuckle at the irony, it was like SRK throwing too much money at small budget directors like ALR, Imtiaz and they not knowing what to do with it and making a mess of everything

@Bold #2: Apart from wanting the challenge of using latest VFX technology to make a normal man appear like a dwarf, SRK actually wanted to try out a dwarf's role like Kamal Haasan had done in Appu Raja. But KH had a double role there, one normal sized twin with pea brain who did the romancing and fighting, the other twin was the dwarf who was ridiculed and rejected by people but he had the brains to punish the villains who had killed his parents. There was a revenge tale in Appu Raja, there were fights, romance, comedy, and Appu the dwarf was presented in a sympathetic light, there was deep pathos in his role. If Bauaa's character was presented in that way it would have found acceptance.

So, I resume:

MoonOrchid: because of Aanand (and his previous work)...I think more previous success (I'm not sure that he had watched Aanand's movies). I would also add that Himanshu was praised as a skilled script writer (but Himanshu himself told that he then wrote a script while knowing that SRK would be the main protagonist...which obviously hadn't a healthy influence).

Both their reputation was a favorable one, so your thought about doing "something 'extraordinary' to get him back to the lead of the race" can't be denied :)

pallavi25: Again a logical thought to not only play other shades of love but at the same time denying the genuine romancing part...no romancing in Fan, more the woman romancing the man in JHMS, playing at romance in Zero (spending a looot of money to do so).

I doubt that his wanting to try a dwarf's role had something to do with Kamal Hassan.

I'm elated about yours and Princoholic's idea about the money throwing away. I like it as a hint to SRK (imo the third layer of the movie). In the 3rd part of the movie he even strips down to the basic clothes (although taking back).

Yeah! Give me more ;)

I think he was thinking abt Kamal Haasan when he signed Zero, you see he and KH have been mutual admirers for a long time. SRK acted in KH's mega film Hey Raam, he was the only Khan to act in a KH film. Plus some people compare/equate his and KH's career arc/appeal as opposed to Rajni and Sallu's massy appeal. Also the fact that both he and KH are Scorpios 😆

Yes, hes started denying the romancing part, I felt hes even mocking his own hands spread out romantic pose in Zero while pretending to romance Aafia.

LOL at stripping, giving away all his clothes and getting them back, do u think that was meta for what hes doing with his directors, his productions? 😛

pallavi, I definitely think that there is a 'meta-level' concerning SRK in Zero. Yes, I also thought that stretching his arms in the romantic song was self-ironic.

Okay with Kamal Hassan as somebody he admires without wanting to copy his dwarf-role.
