Why did SRK make Zero?

During my research work about Zero and SRK, I came across an article written on 23rd Dec. 2018 by Manojit Lahiri, an astute film journalist, who - among others - had and published the first interview SRK ever gave (after Fauji).

I'll only post the part related to the subject and put in bold the most relevant paragraphs:

Shah Rukh Khan: Numero Uno Via Zero

Monojit Lahiri attempts to trace the career graph of Shah Rukh Khan, all set to redefine the power of Zero

he is fearlessly doing the central role of a vertically challenged character in Zero

As every SRK junkie knows, DDLJ was a watershed and defining moment for the young actor and the Yash Raj banner played a huge part in converting him to both a star and a brand. If Salman was perceived as the Hot Bad Boy, Aamir the Mr Perfectionist, SRK was Mr Romantic, the Prince Charming that all young women dreamt about and pined for...the Raj who Raj-ed over the collective fantasies of the chloroformed lasses! Powered with this image, the Dilwale danced, sang and romanced his way through tons of super-hits, winning fans and zonking sponsors and producers across the globe.

However, with time sharp, intelligent and grounded as he was he realised that this honeymoon could not last forever. The law of averages was bound to catch up and old must give way to the new. He would need to explore other areas in terms of content, roles and directors if he wanted to remain in contention.

His early thrusts in this area Chak De and Swadesh fetched him mixed results, with the former a glorious success but the latter, a huge disappointment with audience footfalls. Well, win some, lose some and generally wait for perceptive content-providers to offer him roles that while keeping his star-value in mind gave him scope to move beyond his trademark widening of arms to demonstrate his widening of acting armoury. This was critical because in the altered environment [DDLJ was two decades old, remember] where grounded story-lines, gifted, glamour-free actors performed in the background of small town locales and were winning audience-approval all the way, re-invention and re-positioning were vital.

Further, the fact that Dilwale, Fan, Raees, Dear Zindagi, When Harry Met Sejal did not get the expected response from audiences [curiosity, excitement, thrill] sent a sharp message to one and all: Were SRK's best days over? Were his loyal fans 20 years older bored and distracted with other issues? Were today's kids unable to really connect with a once Mr Romantic, happier bogeying with the likes of Ranbir-Ranveer-Varun-Ayushman-Siddharth-Aditya and gang?

It is against this scenario that his latest film Zero releases. The SRK brand [despite it all] clearly sizzles as endorsements, advertisers and corporates, making an endless beeline for his signature indicates. His personal appearances in shows, events continue to be pre-sold and greeted with huge fanfare. His birthday is a well-known tamasha with crazy crowds outside his home begging for darshan.

SRK is totally aware of all this, but his focus is clearly to retrieve the status that he once owned as a Supernova...this time not as a Dilwale but a consummate actor with solid star-power, which is exactly why like he did at the beginning of his career he is fearlessly doing the central role of a vertically challenged character in Zero. While any resemblance to Kamal Hasan's Appu Raja is a coincidence, it shows SRK's courage and confidence to set off on this voyage of discovery. It also demonstrates his thinking of safety being the most unsafe and risky proposition for an actor totally comfortable with reality-checks, open, willing and ready to move with the times and change with the needs of an altered narrative in Bollywood cinema.

Way to go SRK. More wind beneath your wings.

So, what do YOU think, why SRK made Zero?

You really seem to have loved this movie .. 😆 ... SRK needs to get away from picking up characters which are downright crass ... Not the generation that can tolerate mawali type Heroes ... His character arc was problematic! .. JMS should have been a learning lesson for him ... yet he goes and plays similar crass character!

Nice, you replied :-) yes, I love it...it's really a long time that I haven't watched a movie like this with so many facettes and still a structure that holds everything together.
By reading all threats about this movie I got to know all kind of opinions (also yours) about the movie itself, i.e. Bauua's character, and could respond with my own opinion. (which was a great pleasure)

Here, I would like to talk about something that wasn't discussed. I would like to know what members think why SRK made this movie.

return_to_hades, that was clearly a challenge. but why a little man? Certainly not only because of the enormous challenge for his VFX department.

Shah be like, meri marzi, mera paisa, mera pyar for VFx,

On a serious note, he desperately wants something that would offer him three things, story, acting scope and VFx... He has got two aspects right with Fan and Zero.. Story is the only missing aspect.. Lets hope he finds that because my guy is pretty relentless in his love for VFx.. He ain't giving that up 😆

First Fan, then JHMS, now Zero, with these 3 films SRK is deliberately deconstructing his romantic hero image.

In Fan, he played dual roles of an arrogant, selfish, narcissistic superstar and also his own deranged obsessed fan. As part of the meta references, he mocked his own stardom repeatedly like showing the superstar dancing at weddings, being insecure abt younger actors etc... while the obsessed fan is more interested in pursuing the star he loves than pay attention to the girl who loves him

In JHMS he was a tharki tourist guide who sleeps around with European women but is reluctant to touch the sanskari Indian girl even though hes attracted to her.

In Zero he tricks a handicapped girl to fall in love, sleeps with her and then abandons her, all for revenge. Bauaa is the most flawed, unpleasant, unlikeable character of all.
Because we are not supposed to sympathize with the dwarf hero like usually expected in films like Appu Raja, Bauaa is too arrogant and insolent which is part of his defense mechanism as an often ridiculed short man

All these 3 characters gave rude jolts of shock to his usual audience who are so used to seeing him as a perfectly romantic guy who sweeps girls off their feet with his charm, who sacrifices his love so his girl can be happy after his death, who languishes in a Pakistani jail so his beloved's reputation is not besmirched.
Now that he has murdered all the Rajs, Rahuls, with his own hand, maybe he wants to graduate to non romantic roles, where audience wont expect him to romance in his usual manner.
The current trend is for heroic, larger than life heros, noble lofty characters who can be admired by the audience. To play such flawed, grey characters is going against the trend. But then SRK has always gone against the trends, when his contemporaries were doing romantic heros, he did anti hero negative roles, Darr, Baazigar, when his contemporaries were doing masala movies, sex comedies, he did CDI, Swades.
So once again hes going against the grain but nowadays audience wont accept anti heros, negative heros. Even Nawazuddin said this recently after the failure of Thackeray

Nawazuddin Siddiqui: Society can't accept negative traits in heroes

Feb 05, 2019, 17:37 IST | IANS

Nawazuddin Siddiqui says Indian audiences do not like to see the protagonist in shades of grey and that if only the negative side of the protagonist is reflected on the big screen, this will severly impact the box office

Grey/f**ked up protagonists don't work. I know. Simran. 😭

Indian audience will root commercially for entertainers or inspiring or OTT or larger than life characters.

last year's top 3 grossing movies had leads playing an immoral asshole in Sanju, a villain in Padmavat and a chichora who later became good in Simmba.
Raazi also had a lead who did things which where absolutely horrible, and we even had a thread in the forum discussing whether she is really the heroine or an antihero.

None of these movies had people playing goody goody roles who only do good things, they were all with negative/ grey shades or did horrible things.
I haven't seen Andhadhun yet, but reading threads here discussing the movie, Ayushmann's character wasn't a good person either.

So it is not like public doesn't get antiheroes, agar film hi acchi nahi bani ho toh usme audience ko pasand nahi ayega na.

LOL Sanju was the Biopic of the most controversial actor, people were extremely curious to see Sanjay Dutt's "story" plus it was Hirani who knows how to manipulate audience emotions even while putting a spin on the actual story
Padmaavat was a Historical, Khilji did exist, he was not the anti hero, he was the villain, Queen Padmavati was the hero and she was portrayed as a heroic, brave character who wins at the end through her sacrifice of life
Biopics and Historicals were both trending last year, plus both movies had controversies attached to them which sells
I havent seen Simmba so cant comment on that but Im sure it was all Shetty's knack of making even the trashiest movies successful like he did with Golmaal series. It was an out and out masala entertainer which usually does well.
