A very half hearted, average attempt at giving tribute to such an icon of the nation. Terrible VFX. Lousy direction and cinematography, one of the weakest ensemble in a BW film in recent times, a very inconsistent performance by Kangana and a W*Fish ending.

SPOILER BELOW:

Jhankari Bai opening her pallu and breaking into a Chikni Chameli like item dance with Lakshmibai joining in ?Lakshmibai dying with hands spread like Jesus and fire turning into Om? Lakshmibai becoming Padmaavati by the end of the film?

W*F Man, WHAT THE ACTUAL f**k??!! 🤣

Why can't Bollywood ONE decent historical with a good storyline???

I am not surprised since that is what trailer depicted! .. Trailer itself gave an impression that it would be OTT Bahubali style ... these days commercial movies has only one Mojo "no need for subtlety"! .. So every other frame goes out of hand ... Were you really expecting that this movie would be an exception after seeing the trailer? 🤔

First of all this was the first time I have ever watched a Kangana movie (watched a bit of Queen once in tv but have never watched anything else of hers)

And honestly I'm in awe!! What a majestic performance!!
I don't wanna post spoilers but I might because I don't know how else to appreciate this amazing movie!
for most of it I had goosebumps & a lump in my throat.. I choked during the time her dead baby was taken away from her arms & she goes after her son..
and that moment when her adoptive child she protects like a lioness tugs her back when she goes for her final battle and her feet pause but as "main agar rahoon ya na rahoon, bharat rehna chahiye plays and she lets go and walks ahead to lead from the front.. wow

The ferociousness of her spirit was conveyed with a beautifully restrained performance.. like that moment where she takes on the British dude for the first time when he comes to (fake) wish the marriage & expects her to bow! As a dialogue later expresses it was all about self respect
From a much adored carefree daughter/sister to the woman who blossomed with the gentle love & appreciation from her husband to the mother who gazed at her son with gentle eyes, to the broken woman who watched her perfect life fall apart within days to the fierce warrior borne out of need, will power & sheer love for the motherland.. she didn't hit one false note in the entire movie!

The only couple of minutes the movie falters is during that unnecessary song inserted just before she finds out she is pregnant. I wish it wasn't there. It was jarring & only took away from an otherwise almost flawless movie!

I'm addicted to my phone & specially to checking twitter & instagram every 5-10 mins and today is the first time in like 2-3yrs when the only time I checked my phone midway was during that song sequence and I didn't even realize the movie was long! I was glued to the screen!

There were of course quite a few cinematic liberties taken, but then which movie doesn't.. for the most part it didn't take away from the movie.. more importantly the acting was so good that nothing else mattered..

Audience reaction
I live in UAE & tomorrow is a working day and yet the theater was more than half full where I watched & I watched the night show: and once the credits started rolling people just sat in stunned revere for a couple of mins.. and after that all I heard was how amazing it was..

It truly puts our history with the British rule into perspective to watch a movie from that era made through the eyes of a freedom fighter..
I'm not even Indian (I'm Sri Lankan so we shared the same history as far as the freedom struggle and the subsequent sacrifices are concerned) and I was in awe of the love someone could have for their motherland while watch this. You Indians need to take your children with u to watch and share this amazing woman from your own history with them..

I'm giving it 4.5/5

Wow you summed it up so beautifully. This was exactly my feelings too.

Except for the unnecessary song. It was such a beautiful movie showing us a glimpse of her personality.

Thank you for this amazing write up

Watched in Toronto - best movie of Kanagana and 100000% better than Padmavat.
Kanganas acting is flawless
Her action scenes were exceptional- shes a warrior and KILLED it.
Perfect Rani Laxmibai - she depicted her with full marks.
Im honestly mindblown by Kangana no other leading female actress can match her.
She's beautiful, strong, fearless, sensitive, daring everything in the 3 hour movies. Her eyes did most of the acting and she makes you proud as a women.
Most importantly im in awe of Jhansi ki Rani i know nothing about her but after watching the movie I want to know everything- shes an example everyone should be proud of.

SPOILER
one moment which stuck me was when she loses her child and is crying

This man comes to take her child away, the look she gives him ufff ...like a tigress saying back off , but next moment when a lady comes to take her child away, she immediately becomes this broken mother crying for her dead baby.

That subtle change was mindblowming

I just find it sad that people have to twisted as to troll movies they haven't watched in a review thread. Like why? Are you so berozgaar? And how sad of a person do you have to be to do that? It's one thing to give constructive and legit criticism, but mindlessly troll? 🤔
Anyways, I'm still not counting all the chickens before they hatch. 😆 It's amazing that Manikarnika collected this much on the 2nd day. Hoping that it passes the most pivotal test of Monday after sustaining on sunday. Hoping for her BO victory very ardently. It's been very long in coming.
