My reviewWARNING: Spoilers ahead
If you sat down and tried to nitpick in this film, there is a lot you can nit-pick on. The pressure of the re-shoot in just 40 days with smaller resources really showed in certain scenes in terms of set design and production. That abrupt Dankila was very misplaced. The ensemble cast and extras weren't the best actors, the abrupt editing, which didn't help the matters much. If this film would have had more time, and more resources through a bigger budget for that re-shoot, all those lacking portions of the film would have been a lot less so.
Yet, having said all that, what this film does so brilliantly is capture the very essence of manikarnika, it connects the audience to her very heart beat. I saw some reviews mentioning the lack of development for the side characters, yet, I felt that despite the scenes focusing majorly on Manikarnika, I would have liked to see her early childhood. But in a film about 2.5 hours, it's nearly impossible to fit all that in. If this had been a film with 2 parts like Baahubali, they would have had plenty of space and liberty to develop side characters. Personally, I could not find one extra scene in this movie, every scene was essential to Manikarnika's character build up, whether as a queen, wife, mother, and finally as a revolutionary. I'm glad it did not go in side arcs to develop other characters and meanwhile neglected Manikarnika because then the film would have derailed very badly and the 2nd half wouldn't have been as impactful in terms of audiences invested in Manikarnika herself and her fate.
Though undoubtedly, the best thing, about this movie was the performance of Kangana. I have been a fan for a while, watched queen, TWM2, simran, etc. But despite all that, and having known and appreciated her acting prowess for so long, she stole my heart in this movie. I absolutely adored her in the 1st half, that innocence, yet that fiery self-respect where she would not bow her head down to anyone, especially the british. And her innocent and pure love for her husband. Am I the only one that adored her chemistry with Jishu? She looked so smashing in Rajaji and their chemistry was so good in that song. She wasn't Kangana, by the end, she was Rani Laxmibai herself. It was so easy to go overboard by using 'loud' voice to deliver dialogues, yet, she used restraint in her delivery instead, to show her inner calm and dignity as a queen and a warrior. She commanded every scene in this movie, what a screen presence! Her actions scenes were just as good. I walked away from this film with that bad-ass smirk in the ending scene and the flaming spirit of Manikarnika burning in my mind.
Despite all the bad, it doesn't over weigh the good, namely Kangana's brilliant performance. Go watch it! You will enjoy it! I'm the most critical person around, yes, I cringed in few scenes, but by the end I was shaking with love and adoration for Manikarnika and was sad to see the movie end. I'm glad it is getting the love it deserves! It is an honest effort by the team and should be appreciated as such.
