Agree, my family prefers watching comedy shows in free time.. But there are very few sensible ones on TV right now..
With social media in picture now, does the TRP play the same role as before?
I remember the last serial I loved watching was Iss Pyaar ko kya naam doon.. It didn't have much TRP ratings, but the social media hue and cry when Arnav left the serial was so much that they had to shut it down altogether.. So more than TRP ratings I think there should be something which can take into consideration the opinions of online junta as well.. Today there are very few people(atleast in the urban areas) who don't voice their concerns or opinions on social media.
Social media plays role where the youth primarily participate a lot in it. India is still evolving towards having high internet speeds so watching movies or shows online is still a niche thing to do. People do watch short videos say max 5 mins. Hence this might not play a big role for few years.
Online shows market is still very new and very limited to metro cities say Mumbai, New Delhi and Bangalore. Here the youth are more savvy and pay opt for it.
Most of India prefers TV watching for their entertainment or going to cinema halls for movies. Therefore TV watching is a daily activity. Besides once they buy a package from DTH, they keep going with it for years.
Many Indian households in rural and semi-urban areas have TV access through free to air channels where the repeat of shows is telecast say Zee Anmol, Star Utsav, Colors Rishtey, Sony Pal and more. They pay a min amount as access fee and can watch the FTA news, sports and movie channels.
The online mode of pay and watch is very new and may not go well as the popular Indian mindset is Free is best option. Now too the paid sports channels are not subscribed much and people prefer to go for the bundled up packages given by the DTH provider.
Also learning to use online modes for watching shows is cumbersome for some. TV switching on and off is easy to learn and use. Besides the big screen of TV as opposed to mobiles or tablets or even laptops. No issue of speed too.
TRP measurement is still a big issue and BARC is also not actively working to improve it. Advertisers still
vouch by TV because that covers 75 Cr population!! They get the best exposure at a cost. CBA favours TV. How to measure online viewing? One person account can be used by many and one may download certain content and circulate. It's still dicey.
These days the movies are available nearly the next of release and many dont go to watch it in cinema halls so paying for a short show is rare.
TV will remain the primary mode for entertainment in India- its in the house and safe. Adult content is filtered too and hence its fine.
