The more I grow old the more ambivalent I get about the film's ending and the message it tries to send.
My point is, yes Vanraj was a nice guy and yes he did make a lot of sacrifices for Nandini and took good care of her during times of crisis. But is that enough for one's heart to change?
I often imagine myself in Nandini's place and ponder what I would have done. First of all it would have been devastating to be separated from one's lover like the way Sameer was separated from Nandini. Secondly, being married off to a stranger who I was not attracted to/interested in and having him trying to get intimate with me would have been traumatizing. Thirdly, even if I had come to realize how good a person my husband was and how much he cared for me, I would have still given a solid consideration about reconciling with my past love.
I don't agree when people say Nandini realized that her true love/soulmate was Vanraj and that Sameer was just an infatuation. To be frank Vanraj was also just infatuated by Nandini and her looks when they first met. But he got the opportunity to show that he cared for Nandini during the time they spent together. The sad part about Sameer-Nandini relationship is that they never really got the time they deserved together and therefore they couldn't really see their relationship grow. Who knows maybe Sameer would have also taken great care of Nandini and I am sure around him she would have been more of her original lively self...
Having said all this, I do understand why Nandini chose Vanraj. Fate had it that she would undergo some life-changing experiences with him that would mature her as a person. And by the end of the film she probably realized that she was not the old Nandini anymore and Vanraj was more suitable for her new self. I also think they decided to send Nandini back to her husband partly because of the pati-vrata nari and mangalsutra ki taqat and all that jazz..🥱
Bottom line is life's decisions are rarely easy and we often end up choosing things that we consider to be best for us in our current situation. But maybe in an alternate universe under different circumstances we would have made different choices the outcomes of which might have been equally good/better.
