But there are superstars who are not goodlooking but still reached all the heights of success. It's a requirement for girls in general in society to be pretty whereas for guys it's not considered important to look good.

True but it's actually a deterrent to be too pretty for girls. Like Charlize Theron is only taken seriously as an actor when she wears prosthetics, Gugu Mbatha Raw is stuck playing a CGI feather duster after proving over and over she's an actress to be reckoned with, etc.

I love Madhuri & think she has unparalleled presence, but she's not the sort of "beauty" that would be focus pulling. Aish is, and henceforth it's pretty hard to focus on the acting (though she turns in genuinely awful performances sometimes, but I think part of that is because it's hard to focus on the subtleties with that face, and her more nuanced stuff gets dismissed)

I was watching DVD commentary of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and David Fincher was taking about how ScarJo gave a fantastic audition but he couldn't take her for the part bc felt like the impact of the rape scene would be so undercut by the audience if the actress was that conventionally attractive. I know people mock actresses who claim that being too beautiful is a problem, but who would ever take someone like Irina Shayk, even deglammed, as the girl next door?

And the most popular actresses are not on the super beautiful side. Of course standards for women are tough, so no one conventionally hideous would be elevated, but girls tend to idolize more approachable/relatable faces. Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, etc. In fact Jennifer Aniston is more popular and elevated than Angelina (and Angelina incurs a lot of wrath from women) bc it plays into the insecurity that a man might leave you for a more conventionally appealing woman (like how Katrina incurs some of that same blowback)

@JC- The matrimonial section of newspapers? Preference for a fair bride is universal across communities.

The prevalence of fair skinned actresses in cinema.

Some articles which talk about this-

Men and women are both human. Men are not 'more upfront' about what they like than women are. For example, men will say they like women without makeup but you rarely see women without makeup in popular culture. In fact, when they do step out with makeup, they are ridiculed and get called ugly.

Cross-region marriages: Tale of dark-skinned brides

Sukhbir Siwach | TNN | Feb 15, 2013, 06.53 PM IST

CHANDIGARH: The dark-skinned brides in cross-region marriages are not taken to attend local festivals or weddings due to discrimination based on colour in Haryana and Rajasthan, indicated a new study. Post-marriage, their (brides) dark hue appears to impede their acceptance into conjugal communities, according to a study 'Tied in a Knot - cross-region marriages in Haryana and Rajasthan, Implications for Gender Rights and Gender Relations,' funded by the Royal Norwegian Embassy.

The research was conducted in Rohtak, Rewari and Mewat district of Haryana and Alwar and Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan. "Locals prefer not to take dark-skinned brides brought from different states to urban markets for shopping apart from avoiding them to accompany to attend festivals and weddings. On insisting to accompany, her husband or in-laws tell such women to feel privileged stating they were married despite being dark-skinned," said author of the study, Reena Kukreja, an Indian researcher-cum-film maker based in Canada while speaking to the Times of India on Thursday. During the study, the author has interviewed few dark-skinned cross-region brides married in Rohtak district on exclusions faced due to their skin tone. "The fact is that women here are fair skinned whilst I am darker. They don't like me. When they'd come to Maharashtra for marriage, they didn't consider the skin tone-whether a dark skinned woman would fit the bill. Now, they think about what their relatives might comment. If there is a festival, wedding or any function within the family, I am not taken anywhere. Not to any wedding. Nowhere! Perhaps they think that I might appear as a misfit in their family. All the women will be fair skinned whilst I'll be dark. I'll stand out. Perhaps, that's what they think. I have never been taken anywhere. For instance, there was a marriage in Rohtak-I wasn't taken there at all. Or even when a marriage was here in the village, nor there either," a bride told the author. Another bride said, "My maternal uncle said, 'we'll have to marry her there (Haryana) as she's dark complexioned. People here will demand huge dowry for her.' So, I was married here. My younger sister is fairer than me, I am dark skinned. People demand high dowry for dark skinned women. I couldn't get married in Maharashtra as the dowry demand was huge. My younger sister is married there whilst I am separated from everyone, my family and relatives."

Oh god ! .. this is hilarious ! .. so women want us to accept untalented good looking male actors just as we accept good looking female actors who can't act to save their lives but get casted in flowerpot roles ? .. ok .. 😆

The reason stated is women are "kinder" to pretty girls & ugly guys while the vice versa doesn't hold true for men .. ok .. 😆

I hope people are aware of what men look for in women & what women look for in men are two very different things .. and nope , it doesn't make one gender shallow than the other .. both genders are equally shallow & kind in their own way .. while big pockets & social status is enough to attract a woman , men don't care about all that when it comes to choosing a woman .. they would be ok with poor woman inferior in social status as long as she is good looking & faithful .. and the same mentality reflects in preferences in film actors/actresses ..

Besides , who is stopping women from drooling over good looking guys on screen ? .. create a demand & supply will be there .. you are stuck drooling over 50 year old criminals & saggy chain smoker bakras ( which quite frankly I find a little disturbing , even teen girls gush over how good looking lallu Khan is ) .. so may be instead of pointing fingers at us , that is something you need to look into .. but that will happen only if you take a break from unreasonable whining over everything that 'supposedly' is unfair according to you .. in other words, not a chance .. 😆

Answer my question first. You guys are accusing us guys of being jealous of good looking guys hence good looking guys don't become a superstars, so my question is tell me one really good looking guy with loads of talent who did not became superstar because we hated them?? Dont say Fawad as his case has more to do with him being a Pakistani and all bs politics with it. Salman, Dharmendra and Hrithik are really good looking dudes who made it to the top. Looks helped but more importantly they had charisma, luck and talent.
See the simple thing, a good looking male actor cannot hold male heterosexual audience all because of his good looks. Because we do not get attracted to their good looks, we connect if they have charisma(Salman), charm(Srk), Talent(Aamir), Coolness(Akki) or Machoism(Sanju baba). That does not mean we rejected good looking guys just because they look good, and average male in the audience is ugly. So should I call all girls in the forum insecure and jealous of Shraddha, Jacqueline or Katrina because they are regularly bashed by you guys for their lack of talent.
Also Katrina, Shraddha or Jacqueline got over with the crowd because they had a mix of good luck, charm and presence. Warna there were more appealing girls than them who never made it.
See what I feel from this thread is girls are trying to make it like there is no good looking guys in BW because Indian male hate good looking male actor because we are insecure and petty.

Men should stop being so petty that they don't watch a movie with a goodlooking man, why should boys have all the fun? I feel bad for girls who suffer through bad looking actors while actresses are required to look pretty. Such double standards and men get the real deal - pretty and talented actresses while girls get average and talented men. lol. Such a shame. Reason why I like hollywood now there are as many goodlooking men there as there are goodlooking women! It caters to both men and women audience 😳

Agree. 😆

But the percent of good looking Indian girls is much higher than good looking Indian guys even in real life. Most desi guys don't have great looks.

@bold- Lol how dismissive. Demand can only be created when women hold purchasing power. Currently, BW doesn't care much about female audiences 'cause women don't have the bank balance to bargain for content. Maybe there should be more of a push for equality then? Acknowledging a problem does not equal to 'whining'. I guess people 'whine' about racism, class-ism, casteism etc. 😆

I did mention the part in red in my post. It's not some coincidence but rather a symptom of patriarchy. Men are willing to marry poorer, good-looking women 'cause it does not affect their status (Mostly, male status is not drawn from women) but for a woman, status matters 'cause her status is directly linked to the man/family she is associated with. Patriarchy affects both men and women but I don't understand why mentioning that it disadvantages women more than men is a problem.
