I have often wondered about the exact difference among the three. Especially between script and screenplay and which one has a bigger impact on the movie. So it would be really nice if someone could explain it.

story is simply the basic idea

Story - Basically a brief narrative and does not include dialogues, a part of the story is released as synopsis. E.g Boy meets girl, fall in love, girl's father is against, sends villians.. boy fights them bravely.. proves his love, father is convinced and they marry. (sadly most Bollywood movies have the same story)
Script - Literally everything you hear while watching a movie is included in the script. Detailed storyline, the way the characters interact, their lines (dialogues) et al. The script is what the actor's get to read before signing a movie. Been hearing actresses shout from roof tops, skinshow - kissing scenes only if the script demands the same? Its the script and the characters in them, which does the convincing part.

Screenplay - Is usually limited to movies and television. Apart from the script, it covers the visual aspects of film making. Like how a particular scene will be shot, where the songs will eventually be included, the shooting locations etc. The awards are presented to the Best Original Screenplay as it includes the entire process of film making, which explains why you probably may have never heard of an award for Best Script.

I am no film expert but i will attempt:

Story- The basic premise.
Script- The scene-by-scene written text of the film
Screenpay- How the script is unfolded onscreen, involves other technicalities like acting and direction

Does it ever happen that story and script are written by different people? Or is it written by the same person always? Also, who writes the screenplay in most cases? Is it the director? Looks like its a very very key element in shaping up the movie.

I assume you are talking about the credits given at the end of a movie.

A story credit is given to the person who writes the story. The basic plot of the movie or in adaptation cases the author of the said work (book, novel, comic etc). Its written in past tense like a novel.

A script is a refined form of the story. It is in present tense and in dialogue form. It includes all the characters and the dialogues they are supposed to utter. A sample would be:

Bruce: Diana!

Bruce: Clark, she is not opening her eyes.
Clark: We have to take her to the Watch tower now.

And so on.

A script is the basic draft of the story in dialogue form. It is the draft that is given to actor before they sign on to a project for consideration. Again its in present tense. No movie credit is given for it.

A screenplay is a script essentially but more defined. It contain all the material but with set, location, mood, color, lighting details included.

So the above sample becomes;

"Chaos all around, JL finally victorious after a massive battle.
0023 hours.
Abandoned military base , Russia.
Dark, little lighting, tense."

Bruce: Diana! (his eyes full of fear and worry)

Bruce: (turning to Clark) Clark, she is not opening her eyes.
Clark: We have to take her to the watch tower now.

This is a screenplay.

Lets take Harry Potter for a further example;
- The story credit will be given to JK Rowling.
- The Screenplay credit will be given to whoever wrote the screen play.

Incase the story and screenplay, both are written by the same person the credit is given as:

- Written by: _________. (No mention of screenplay and story seperately here. In this case both combine into one credit).

For example the story and the screenplay of the town was by Ben Affleck so the credits will be:

Directed by: Ben Affleck.
Written by: Ben Affleck.

Hope this helped. B/w good topic.

Is it safe to say then that normally the person writing script would also be responsible for screenplay? Of course the director would also have a say. Or can someone else apart from scriptwriter/director also write screenplay?
