@enchanted

I think screenplay can be seen as the three-dimensional version of the two dimensional script. So usually screenplay is the product of the inputs of the script-writer as well as the director.

This is a comment I found on quora regarding the topic, it might be helpful:

A script and a screenplay are really the same thing, and the reason some people tend to think there's some sort of technical difference is because certain terms -- like "spec script" or "shooting script" -- use one term over another. But there's no special reason for it that's of any import, the fact is that a screenplay and a script are the same thing, and one term is used more often prior to production and another term more often used after production because most of the terms you find during the film process include the term "script" in them for brevity.

If someone hands you a screenplay they wrote, and they call it a "script"," then they are right. And if someone hands you a script with the director's markups and all of the final shooting details etc and they call it a "screenplay" then they are also right. But yeah, it is true that on a set you'll probably not hear the word "screenplay" simply because everyone's at the point of using "script" or some term including that word.

The screenplay is the extra layer with everything that was left out of the script. It may very well be the 'shooting script' in most cases, which is less of an actor's tool and more of a director's tool. The screenplay includes those aspects of filming that are outside the actor's purview, things like camera angles and cut or fade instructions, effects that the audience will see but have no affect on the actor's performance while on set.

From the filmmaking side, being on set, we refer to the printed copy as a script. The script is a tool that the actor and rest of the crew use while on set at a particular location, and is often only a portion of the entire screenplay.

Directors, actors, continuity directors, script supervisors, and film loaders (clapper/slate operators) often make notations on their own copy of the script.

The screenplay would be the entire thing, in its original form. You might submit a screenplay, but you wouldn't submit a script.

Story - Basically a brief narrative and does not include dialogues, a part of the story is released as synopsis. E.g Boy meets girl, fall in love, girl's father is against, sends villians.. boy fights them bravely.. proves his love, father is convinced and they marry. (sadly most Bollywood movies have the same story)

Script - Literally everything you hear while watching a movie is included in the script. Detailed storyline, the way the characters interact, their lines (dialogues) et al. The script is what the actor's get to read before signing a movie. Been hearing actresses shout from roof tops, skinshow - kissing scenes only if the script demands the same? Its the script and the characters in them, which does the convincing part.

Screenplay - Is usually limited to movies and television. Apart from the script, it covers the visual aspects of film making. Like how a particular scene will be shot, where the songs will eventually be included, the shooting locations etc. The awards are presented to the Best Original Screenplay as it includes the entire process of film making, which explains why you probably may have never heard of an award for Best Script.

Yes, unless the first draft undergoes major changes.

David Goyer was responsible for the story and script of BvS. But when Affleck was cast as Batman and I guess WB were not impressed by the said draft; they talked to Affleck and he brought Chris Terrio on board ( Terrio wrote Affleck's Argo which won the oscar for best picture). Thank God for it by the way, I was terrified Goyer was going to write another MOS.

So the revised/final screeplay was his. In that case the credits are shared.

Now if you see the trailer for BvS; the credit is;

Written by: C.Terrio and D. Goyer.

So its a case of what you were asking. Goyer wrote the first script but Terrio wrote the screenplay. This happens when the studio or the director isnt happy with the first draft or the writer isnt available for some reason.

^^ Do the directors write the screenplay too? If I look at it as a third person, seems like Screenplay writing has many technicalities associated with it, unlike the story and script. So, while a fresher can come up with story/script without much knowledge about movies, screenplay writing does require some insight into the working of films. Isnt it? I know this probably like those silly questions but I'm just curious. 😆

Usually many directors are involved in screenplays while many give only the scriptwriter the credit for screenplay inspite of being a part of the process.Like Sujoy wrote the screenplay for Kahaani with Advaita but only Juhi was credited for screenplay in Piku inspite of her interviews where she said Shoojit was a part of it.

I feel more than story and script, a good screenplay always elevates the film.Sometimes films even with the best idea or script fails due to a bad screenplay so screenplay is the most important of all.I think nowadays producers also decide to produce the film only after going through the screenplay.Don't know how it works in Hollywood though
