Personally I don't even know about background of artistes. And don't bother even if I know. My opinion is based on their work and also differs from film to film.

But I was really curious after seeing obvious communal slant in preferences, online.

I think maybe this does matter in real life which is why the stars try to release films on certain festivals. Like Deols chose date around Lohri for YPD if I am not mistaken.

@ red - seen dat a lot on youtube as well!

Nope. Identity of artiste does not influence my like/ dislike and I think it holds true for majority of the Indians. Biggest proof is three Khans ruling the roost for last 20 years despite belonging from a minority religion. Of course you would get some radical comments online which would claim to support or oppose someone on communal or regional lines, but they wouldnt amount to even 2% of general population. Online space is often polarised and distorted and is not reflective of the true public opinion. General masses is concerned only with how entertaining the movie or star is. In some cases people may support the tars of their region, Dharmendra and Deols being the prime example. Pakistani stars get a red carpet welcome if they are even half decent, eg Fawad Khan and Ali Fazal. Infact being from Pakistan works in their favour to atleast get a good launch. See the hype Fawad Khan got even before his movie released because he was a Top TV star in Pak. Now compare it with the treatment that so called Top TV stars of India got (Barun/GC/KSG). Leave alone hype they couldnt even get a decent movie to be launched with and had to settle for B-grade/horror genre.

I really don't think anyone looks at religion or background. Who has time to think of all that? Religion or background of artist has nothing to do with the movie.

Most people watch a movie for the content or the actor. A movie is judged on its own merit. It deserves to be praised if it's good. It deserves to be criticized if it's not good. I liked Slumdog Millionaire and I thought it was interesting to watch. It didn't matter who was the artist or who was behind it.

Some of these things overlap though.
Hrithik is Hindu Punjabi. Deols are Sikh Punjabi

In the end they are all still punjabi.

Its only an artist's competency which is the deciding factor. Like I dont like Atif but not because he is a Pakistani but because I find him besura.
But having said this I do find lot of people a biased...forget Pakistanis but many people dislike the three Khans due to their religion...including certain members of this forum.
I feel to be fair religious/regional affinity does influence liking to some extent. Maybe because if an actor is strongly identified with a region then people of that region obviously know a lot about that celebrity as general awareness is more among the local population as they are a subject of conversations. Giving an example someone like Amitabh Bachchan is liked a lot by Bengalis because he is seen as Bengal's son-in-law as well because he spent some of his struggle days in Calcutta. But this doesnt extend to everyone...for instance Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi who was also Bengal's son in law but was never as popular as Amitabh Bachchan.

This much essay... 😛 but nicely written 👏

Nope
I'm Marathi and I think Madhuri is just a pretty face with zilch personality and humor
my favorite person in the entire world (next to the obvious) is AR Rahman and we've got not very much in common in terms of religion/region

In my 'like artist' list - Irffan Khan , Naseeruddin Shah , KK Menon , Tabbu , Seema Vishwas , Harsh Mayar (I m Kalam kid) , Vinay Pathak , Raghuveer Yadav , Kadar Khan , Ranvir Shorey , Zakir Hussain , Nana Patekar etc. are in top notch places & none of them belong to my caste/background/whatever..

While most Kapoors , Roshan etc. can't make it to that list despite belonging to same caste/background as me..
It is their talent/personalities which does it for me as from my caste also , I like Om Puri , Amrish Puri , Pawan Malhotra , Tisca Chopra , Rajat Kapoor , Shiney Ahuja , Akshay Khanna etc..

"Does religion or regional background of an artiste influence your liking?"

Judge me 🤓
