'We Just Want Justice,' Parents of Nirbhaya, India's Daughter, Speak Out
NEW DELHI: "I am sorry mummy... I gave you so much trouble," she said, taking her mother's hand and kissing it. Within seconds she stopped breathing.

She came to be known as "Nirbhaya" - fearless - the one who became the conscience of India and forced the country to soul-search about the safety of its women.

"I am sorry...those were her last words. Then the monitor flat-lined," her mother says in British filmmaker Leslee Udwin's documentary "India's Daughter", which will premiere on NDTV 24x7 at 9 pm on March 8, International Women's Day.

On 16 December 2012, the 23-year-old medical student was brutally assaulted and tortured with an iron rod on a moving bus by six men, one of them a 17-year-old. She was dumped on the road, naked and bleeding, along with her friend who was also attacked.

"I want to live," she told her mother at a Delhi hospital, and she fought for 13 days, as protests erupted across the country and even abroad.

One of the four men sentenced to death for the horrific assault, Mukesh Singh, has blamed the woman for the rape, displaying an appalling lack of remorse in an interview to Ms Udwin.

The woman's mother told NDTV, "Our daughter died in front of us. After that, if anyone abuses us, it doesn't affect us anymore. If anyone says anything after watching this documentary, it won't have any effect on me. I want to go everywhere and raise my voice. We want justice for our daughter and the culprits should be hanged. I also want justice for thousands of parents who may be like us."

Her father said, "Our judicial system is totally useless, our case is pending in court for more than two years, it's the third year now. It's been one year in the Supreme Court. Not even a single hearing has taken place and we have no idea when it will happen. If our high flying case is dealt with so lightly by the court, can you imagine what happens to the other cases?"

A fifth man involved in the attack, Ram Singh, was found dead in his cell in 2013. The 17-year-old, a minor, was sentenced to three years in a reform facility.

Ahhh looks like parents are OK with the documentary. In that case, ban doesn't really make any sense.

And it sucks that they are still waiting for justice even after 2 yrs :(

I watched Jaya being vocal about the same in the Parliament discussion and some idiot wasn't even letting her finish. f**king leaders

Ya it looks like the parents are OK...I mean the worst of the worse that can happen to anyone has already happened to them...losing ur child and how...Its like how excessive pain makes u numb...that situation..

Parents don't have issues with documentary, its the people who cant handle the truth about our country. Its high time we accept our faults and deal with it. People should stop assuming that her parents feelings will get hurt by the words of the culprits, I think the worse has already happened..if anything this documentary might help bring justice to nirbhaya by expediting the trial.

banning the documentary is not going to serve anything.
Isn't it like SMJ show ?? where people are aware of the issues but still the host talks about it, interviews/ talks to victims/families and try to bring more awareness or to reach out to people ?
Nirbhaya's mom told in an interview, they would go and talk about it wherever /whenever they can and try to bring awareness and some change.

I am against the ban.

And lastly this documentary or no documentary, burning question and concern here is JUSTICE !! Hope those thousands of victims and their families gets JUSTICE !! and I hope this documentary talks abt it too! and raises that question as well !

Irony has died without saying good bye.
We the ppl always ask the authorities to be PROACTIVE not juts reactive a typical BW movie where police comes in the end.

NOW, WE the PPL want to see the doco and decide for ourselves if it was right to be banned or not.

So, WE r authorities now. Depends on what kind of mindset or opinions we have, lets just say 50/50 for the ban and no-ban.

Now, those who r for ban.. have watched it.. they cant reverse the process. Those r against the ban have watched it, they loved it.. thier blood boiled and they broke the computer screen.

Those who r close to victims families r more vulnerable.. they want the law on their hands.. and anything can happen. To avenge one innocent girl's demise can cause many other innocent ppl die.

So, back to top.. Do u want authorities to take proactive steps or do u want the light up the fuel and watch the air takes it further.

The argument that it happened in past, so whats the prob now? is so absurd, it will tak us to stone ages when we were canibals.

If the authorities see, more than anything good out of this doco, worst will happen. Godhra followed by Gujarat riots. Most who suffer r innocent civilians helplessly.

So, make up ur mind. DO WE ALL WANT TO BE THE AUTHORITY TO WATCH IT FIRST AND DECIDE LATER IF IT WAS OK OR NOT... AND WE CAN HAVE 10 MILLIONS PAGES OF ARGUMENTS BY THE TIME VICTIM DIES OR A MOVIE MAKES 1000 CRS.

Or do we let the authority do its job?

Child po*no was linked to any po*n websites some 15 years ago... and even if u close it, there comes 10s of pop ups.. The western countries took control of it and sent many behind bars and now its banned.

There r so many movies from other western countries that r banned in NZ. No noise. We dont ask for "hey, its our right to watch it coz i m an adult".

We blame media over n over again for making mountain out of mole... and then if media is asked to excercise its responsibilty, we say its threat to democracy.

On one hand, we want to take full control of authorities and we r as ever divided to come to any conclusion, we blame the authority to give us the authority in first place?

If i ever hear a film maker talking abt his movie or doco, I always see good things. yes, why not? So lets release all films in the world w/o any censorship as long as the film maker says it a good msg that "hot young girl makes $1000 per day in po*n movies than making $100 a day frying beef".

Its a good msg isnt it?

But then lot has happenedin past.. I mean wrong stuff.. so why now ban it? wow, so lets just keep going. Lets hit reverse button on remote.. good old days. Cowboys, raja-maharaja, nazis, WW1 WW2 and make the ww3 the end of the world.

After all this blabbering, I want to ask u a simple question.

Do U think U shud watch the DOCO first and judge for urself if it should have aired? Simple question. Yes or no.

I'm watching the documentary now and the parents are part of the documentary. They have given their full cooperation and they are telling their daughter's story.

link please.

I wish people would shed a light or two in India. They need to discuss this. And I believe that our culture is to be blamed and the parents.
