Cinematography: quite good some of the scenes are nicely shot in huge scale

editing: is ok a bit too long but tolerable

actions: forced not needed didn't blend well and the actions are nothing new same old slo mo

songs:looks good on the screen u can enjoy but still nothing extraordinary

Direction: is decent but doing the same old thing

acting:

Srk-good(better than CE) he didn't go OTT stayed pretty much in character which i liked

Dpad-Decent better than i thought but nothing like CE

Abhi-funny did pretty well

Sonu-Silly just about ok

Boman-annoying but funny in some parts

vivian-monotonous and pretty much useless

Happy New Year First (1st) Day Box Office Collections - Early Trends

According to early trends, Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone's Happy New Year First (1st) Day Box office collections should be in the range of 37-38 cr. The Day 1 business looks to be the highest ever first day collections for a Hindi film in Bollywood history, be it A-B-C centers or Tier 1-2-3 cities collections are extraordinary.

The film is looking to create first day records in all circuits all across the country. Mumbai looks difficult because Singham Returns had local flavor but Happy New Year has huge release in this circuit so that could compensate. The opening in West Bengal. Rajastham, AP/Nizam, CP-Berar, CI etc is nothing short of a riot.

Surprisngly even the single screens in mass belts like Bihar, Odisha, CP-Berar, CI, Rajasthan have opened to packed houses and they are expecting record breaking collections through out the day. The film should hold up well in evening and late evening shows and will get the support of the family audience which come out in huge numbers today. The film is eyeing day one records in West Bengal, Rajasthan, CP-Berar, CI, Mysore, AP/Nizam to name a few.

Happy New Year Review - Entertainer of the year

Vishal Verma, IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, October 21, 2014]

Movie Analysis

Fantastically succeeding on the level to entertain the masses worldwide with a rousing grand Diwali spectacle, global super star Shah Rukh Khan's 11th Diwali release Happy New Year' is a crowd pleasing dazzler designed to make the fans and the gallery happy and dance to its tune.

The cynics however will be kept busy on finding the logics behind this grand heist and while they do so Farah Khan makes the audience stand with the Indiawaale' for its considerable patriotic' appeal to give moments of joy, happiness, dance, romance, laughter, brotherhood, heroisms, patriotisms in this flashy Diwali sizzle.

As ordered by Farah Khan Happy New Year' (SRK and Farah Khan third outing after Om Shanti Om) is high on EQ (entertainment quotient) and low on IQ. The writers Farah Khan, Althea Kaushal and Mayank Puri do miss the vow' factor seen in OSO' but add enough spice to make the movie rise to its crowd pleasing sentiments in this tale of a grand diamond heist in Dubai during a world dance competition masterminded by a freshly developed new chiseled Shah Rukh Khan with a golden highlight.

Charlie's weird team consist of a bar dancer Mohini (Deepika Padukone), a bewda Nandu Bhide (Abhishek Bachchan), an ex army man with problems in his ear Jagmohan (Sonu Sood) - funny six pack abs take on Sunny Deol, a cool Parsi key cracker Temhton Irani (Boman Irani) who goes into fits for 30 seconds and returns back without any problems. A hacker Rohan Singh (Vivaan Shah) all get together after good jokes, bad jokes, gay jokes (going a bit far) to rob Shalimar owned by Diamond King Charan Grover (Jackie Shroff). Why he is doing it is explained in due course. Divulging details might work as spoilers.

The writers as seen in a Farah Khan previous entertainer dribble with the ploys seen and available in a B-town script but this time couple of unnecessary use of foul language and stubborn shallowness in the story in this Diwali eye candy is a bit put off for some traditional audience.

Rest is fine as the audience won't mind and as a solid b-town masala entertainer and a Farah Khan film the best is reserved at the end. Farah Khan keeps it simple and continues the momentum with continue moments of fun setting the scene right for its final crescendo making the audience stand up for Indiawaale' as the emotion current and desh bahkti' start running high.

Yes of course the end credit is again a delight with the masterstroke of SRK and the so very cute little Abram coming on screen together making the smile on the face of the audience remain intact till they reach their homes.

Having production values to the highest standards Happy New Year' is exceptionally shot by Manush Nandan camera. Crisply edited by Anad Subaya and Tushar Parekh. Fabulous Shashank Tere's production designing gives the film its required grand opulence. Baylon Fonseca''s action is fitting.

An SRK potential blockbuster without a current chartbuster is impossible to imagine and also Vishal & Shekhar had already made the world groom to Happy New Year' hit tunes.

Indiawaale featuring the entire star cast is well picturised and comes at the right time. Lovely Ho Gayi featuring Deepika Padokone looks fantastic on screen. Manva Lage is the most soothing from the lot.

Shah Rukh Khan as Charlie is completely charming looking cool and dapper the global superstar pleases his fans and audience alike. SRK rules right from the word go right from the raw gritty action packed entry to the emotionally charged climax King Khan Shah Rukh Khan engages the audience by his endearing performance. don't miss the entry.

Deepika Padukone is a sheer delight to watch. Pairing with SRK for the third time after Chennai Express they both seem to share B-town's most crackling chemistry. First it was SRK and Kajol now its SRK and Deepika. Watch the scene when she does the famous Chak De' take.

Abhishek Bachchan is extremely entertaining and gets a meaty role. Playing perfectly to the gallery Abhishek bewda act as Nandu Bhide will be loved by the audience.

Boman Irani is fantastic as the cool aged Parsi. Sheer delight.

Sonu Sood gives an enjoyable performance and spins a surprise.

Vivaan Shah is niece. Jackie Shroff is menacing. Anupam Kher is competent.

Small cameos by Dino Morea, Prabhu Deva, Sarah-Jane Dias, Malaika Arora Khan, Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Dadlani, Sajid Khan are entertaining.

Business Analysis

Made at an estimated budget of 150 crore Red Chilies Entertainment Happy New Year' is already in a win win situation. Already sitting happy with a 202 crore booty to its kitty - 125 crore from Yash Raj for the worldwide distribution rights (MG), 65 crore from Zee Network for the Satellite rights and 12 crore from T-Series the music rights.

'Happy New Year' is hitting the screens in record 6000 screens worldwide (5000 in India in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu) this nonstop entertainer is destined for an earth shattering grand mega opening - anything between 30-35 crore is a possibility.

The three day festive weekend in many parts of India on occasion of New Year and Bhai Duj in many parts of India and of course the presence of global superstar Shah Rukh Khan in his 11th Diwali offering will make the box office stare for a record weekend.

The entertaining content plus the added star value of Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood and Farah Khan entertainer with SRK having hit music and positive word of mouth will attract more and more legs to the theatre.

Certain to reach the 200 crore mark in India the overseas collections will be mind-blowing considering the fact that SRK is the most favorite choice in Bollywood's overseas market Happy New Year' is certain for a grand heist worldwide. A guaranteed Blockbuster.

Rating ****

For being a complete palatable entertainment to the core

Powered by India's global superstar SRK

And

Patriotism

Happy New Year'
U/A; Action-comedy drama
Director: Farah Khan
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood, Vivaan Shah, Farah Khan
Rating:

When there is talk of diamonds in a Bollywood film, can top security vaults, thumb impression of one person only entry and dare devilry daylight robbery be far behind? Throw in an ailing Maa, another Maa obsessed son, yet another son-out-to-take-his-father's-badlaa and a poor girl's izzat in and you have a Bollywood potboiler bubbling and ready. Director Farah Khan offers a fully masaledaar entertainer yet again and as is her style, serves it with a side dish of dollops of delightful self-deprecating humour.

'Happy New Year'

Farah takes a jibe at a lot of things in Bollywood, which includes SRK's own films including his revered 'Chak De! India', with such light hearted glee that it is impossible not to break into a smile more often than not, that is, if you like that brand of humour.

Charlie (Shah Rukh Khan), with a blonde streak and speaking impeccable English, is a man with a mission. His father (Anupam Kher) was wronged by the wily villain Charan Grover (Jackie Shroff), an obscenely rich man with a penchant for diamonds and of course, high security vaults. Supporting him are Nandu Bhide (Abhishek Bachchan), a naag dance and dahi handi breaking enthusiast, Temton (Boman Irani), a stud in his locality, Jagmohan (Sonu Sood), an ex-army man who's deaf or not deaf according to convenience, Rohan (Vivaan Shah), a computer hacker and of course Mohini (Deepika Padukone), a gorgeous bar dancer. The mission is to steal nine sparkling diamonds worth 300 crore dollars from right under Grover's nose and for that they have to take part in a world dance championship competition. Well, there is a logical story behind why. But then there is also total absence of logic in some other parts of the film.

Farah's movies do not really allow you to look for logic because after all, everything can be attributed to it being just the extension of the spoof that she makes of illogical films. But even then some in your face bloopers like the sharp Charan Grover missing seeing his own son's lookalike just because he is hiding behind dark glasses, (Abhishek's double role) and some others are still difficult to digest.

The entire cast, including Daisy Irani who plays Boman's eccentric Parsi mother, was clearly enjoying being part of this movie. While SRK is at his charming best and Sonu, Boman and Vivaan have given sincere performance, Deepika Padukone and Abhishek Bachchan stand out among others. Deepika's graceful dance act in the climax is enough to show why this girl is where she is. While Abhishek's role as Charan's son is rather insipid, he manages to touch a chord with his other role as the uneducated, innocent boy .

Just before the climax, when the confused SRK is thinking hard for the password to get to the diamonds as he is running against time, the young audience sitting around me for the first day first show had already figured it out and were loudly prompting him. That sure is a sign of an audience friendly film. And of course, a smart move.

Those who love Bollywood for its quirks and idiosyncrasy, will like this film. If you tend to take life and films more seriously than that, watch something else.

'Happy New Year' (HNY) Movie Review: An Out-n-Out Entertainer

  • By Prarthna Sarkar October 24, 2014 15:43 IST

  • IBTimes India Rating: 3.5

"Happy New Year" fulfills its promise - delivers an entertaining feat from start to finish. Although predictable in parts, this Farah Khan directorial will for sure steal hearts and earn million smiles.

'Indiawaale' song from 'Happy New Year'
'Indiawaale' song from 'Happy New Year'. Happy New Year Movie/ Twitter

The story is about Charlie aka Chandramohan Sharma (Shah Rukh Khan), who sets out on a mission to steal "a handful of diamonds" from the menacing business tycoon Charan Grover (Jackie Shroff) in order to avenge the injustice, of which his father Manohar Sharma (Anupam Kher) was a victim.

So, to pull off the heist he sets out to collect members with quirky skill sets for his team. Nandu Bhide (Abhishek Bachchan) throws up left, right and centre, Jag aka Jagmohan Prakash (Sonu Sood) is a bomb expert who's also hard of hearing, Temhton Irani aka Tammy (Boman Irani) is a safe-cracker and Rohan Singh (Vivaan Shah), the geeky hacker.

Now, for these men to pull off the heist they would have to participate in the World Dance Championship in order to be a step closer to Grover's diamonds. This is where Mohini Joshi (Deepika Padukone) steps in. With her "movement of the booty" (as Charlie observes), the leggy lass manages to teach the team to at least move their limbs in tandem.

The robbery, which takes place in The Atlantis, Dubai (the same venue where the WDC finals are to be held) might come across as a mash-up of every heist film you've ever watched, but Farah does a job of keeping the pace going.

Shah Rukh mesmerises with his charm, Deepika scorches the screen with her moves, Abhishek hams it well as the nutjob from the chawl (slum), Sonu puts his best ab forward as he beats goons to pulp, Boman plays the perfect Parsi with a great comic timing and Vivaan blends in well as the nerdy element.

While the high point of the film is definitely its stellar cast, the music (by Vishal-Shekhar) might come across to some as a bit off. The "Indiawaale" song will linger in your ears much after you've left the theatres but it eventually fizzles out.

The grand, colourful canvas and wide-angle shots work in the film's favour as the idea was to offer Bollywood lovers the biggest film ever. The humour is borderline slapstick but will have you in splits.

The director for sure knows the craft of churning out a blockbuster well, and has easily delivered this year's best entertainer. Wait till the end of the end credits for Shah Rukh's bundle of joy - AbRam Khan.
