I am an English Medium student, hence I don't know Hindi/Regional Language And THAT's COOL.

Attitude has destroyed Hindi. Most of the new generation doesn't know to write/read Hindi in India. Sad state of affairs. Study wherever you want, You should be fluent in Hindi. Otherwise will lose our National Language. It's nothing cool to not know Hindi if You are an Indian & living in India. You should be ashamed of accepting it in front of people.

Sad. Thankfully that's not the case with the speakers of Bengali or South Indian languages.

But why should one know to read and write Hindi? It is not the national language.

Things that I have learned in this topic

- Sonumb is Sodumb that everything she says or does is so dumb. If Sonam would have by chance been the first to theorize relativity, E =MC^2 would be the punch line of every Sonam joke.

- People actually believe India has a national language, and that language is Hindi

- Most people seem to be unaware that India is the second largest English speaking nation in the world and that the 2001 census survey itself stated most Indians who speak English use it as a first language basis

- Something is wrong with Indians who prefer using English. After all it is better to isolate yourself into niche indigenous language communities than choose a platform that allows you to communicate with majority of your friends, coworkers and acquaintances.

- Bilingual and multilingual people are legally mandated to make their Sophie's choice

- India-Forums follows a modified Godwin's law of the internet "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Katrina Kaif approaches 1"

The member is cautioned NOT to bring in country in expressing your views. This is against IF rules.

OMG. This is possibly the craziest thing I've seen on IF.
I said (country, a country I was born in) is being silly and I'm getting a frigging warning for this?

It is not the national language. As it's been said throughout the thread and again after this post. But I will just repeat it.

Plenty of Indians living in India do not know Hindi and they have nothing to be ashamed of. There is no reason why Hindi should be pushed down on them and all Indians should know that language.

You yourself wrote Indian and living in India. And that's the thought which many Hindi speakers carry with them, and which Non Hindi-speakers see all too much of.

And it's not just English that is a danger to Indian languages.

Hindi has overtaken certain regional languages in some places, and major regional languages have eroded certain minor languages.

So no, it's not just English that's the big bad destroyer of cultural heritage and languages.

I think many people do not understand the language dynamics of many parts of India with several languages and dialects.

The recent conflict between Maharashtra and Karnataka over renaming Belgaum highlights a cultural and linguistic conflict that goes on all over India.

Ours is a bilingual and multilingual country with English or Hindi or both being a preferred bridge language. We can't take offense over what someone chooses to be their first or preferred language.
