Since she did not grow up in a Sindi/Punjabi environment, that bit can be excused.
So what is the problem here? She's also excused for not knowing Marathi (at a fluent level). She would be excused if she didn't know English (I mean here in the forum). Only thing she is NOT excused is that she doesn't know Hindi as her first language and if doesn't know how to read write (or at least at a very fluent level).
The environment she grew up in speaks English as well as Hindi and Marathi. Yet the problem people have is that she chooses her first language as English.
I believe Freida Pinto and Illeana D'Cruz have said something similar. But they are not taken to task because of the ethnic and religious background, even though they grew up in the same city. It is not just the Anglo-Indians and the Christians who speak English as Indians. And Freida Pinto and Ileana D'Cruz are not Anglo-Indians but rather come from Konkani backgrounds. But they wouldn't be as questioned if they were to say they are more comfortable with English and consider it their first language, while others would be. Even though English is just as valid a language to be used in India as any other language. It is one of the official and recognized language and is a language that is used daily amongst the masses no matter what background.
