^ But the only reason this is made an issue is because she said English. If she had said Hindi no one would have made an issue, but it would still be wrong according to the explanation given here. Hindi would still be her "preferred language" and not "first language/mother tongue."

And if someone wants to say that people would have still made an issue and taken her to task if she had said Hindi is her first language, well we all know that's not true.

The Punjabis in Bollywood who don't speak or know Punjabi--their "first language" is?

Since her mother tongue or "first language" should be Punjabi or Sindhi (since it's tied to ethnicity by the argument presented here), then what makes Hindi more acceptable than English? Hindi and English are both official languages of India. She is not in any way wrong in saying English over Hindi. While her family may have also spoken Hindi, they surely would've also spoken in English which is also her language of education--thus she would've been more comfortable with English.

And to the argument that the family would not speak English. Watch The Inner World of SRK and see which language he uses with his children.

While in official capacity first language may mean mother tongue, what is wrong with Sanam talking of First Language as it's used in many normal usage. And I've always heard Indians use the term "mother tongue," and I know Indians themselves who have said their first language is Engish and ____.. So even if in official capacity it's to mean "mother tongue" I highly doubt that's how all Indians view those two terms when applying them in real life.

Agree.
Officially, First language literally means your Mother Tongue but unofficially, most people refer to First langauge as their preferred language in India. So in that case, Sonam is correct in saying that English is her first language if she speaks mostly in English at home and otherwise.

Following her aunty Buddhi Rai Bachchan.

But I guess there is difference between mother tongue and first language.

But here school form arguement and legal discussion are funny.

Check school form before deciding which is ur first language is more funny.

I don't even understand why everyone is making such a big deal out of what she said. There is nothing wrong if English is her first language. She's probably just more comfortable in English, compared to other languages. I went to India a few years back for research work & I was surprised that most of the college students there spoke in English. In fact, I speak more hindi in my own country, then I spoke in India.

I am not a Sonam fan, but its getting really annoying how everyone makes a mountain out of everything she says. I know she is a celebrity so everyone watches out for what she says. But we should look at our ourselves too. Its really easy to criticize and act smart on an online forum where your identity is unknown. I am sure many smart people here also make lots of mistakes in their real lives each day.

PEACE.

I guess Sonam got mixed up between native & first language here. Also do the Chinese & french gal not speak any English?? I don't see what the outrage is but yes I have seen most Indians distancing themselves from their heritage consistently. Maybe they want to identify themselves as global citizens first & then Indian.

IMO First language is synonymous to native language/mother tongue but sometimes the language you speak the best.AFAIK Most of the applications for school/college/jobs in India ask for Mother tongue.Though in India, First language is the medium of language in which you did your schooling. So if all your books were in English and you were taught in English, your first language automatically becomes English. So when anyone even asks what was your first language most of them will reply with English or a Hindi medium or regional mediums. Are Indians then considered native English speakers.No. They have to take English proficiency tests to enter other universities.

Now my mother tongue is Tulu which doesn't have a script. I speak English,Hindi,Kannada, Tulu well and can understand few other South Indian languages. But can read and write only English. So I think English is my first language and it definitely doesn't mean I am ashamed of being a Mangalorean or Indian or South Indian.

Sonam seems pretentious cos she is comparing herself to the other two. I mean if a foreigner says this person is speaking Indian, we might get offended and point out the language she is speaking. Similarly that Chinese lady's language might be Mandarin or Cantonese and Sonam just mentions Chinese.😆 I would have liked it better if Sonam would have said that "all three of us speak different languages but" ..

Yes.

Sonam's assumptions on the first languages of other people is a very valid criticism. You cannot even give her benefit of the doubt for actually knowing their first language because "Chinese" is not the name of a language at all.

But what she claims as her own first language is her choice.

To clarify:
In India if you've received your graduation level education in English(from India or abroad), for all purposes(passports, applications to foreign universities) your first language is English. You need to take IELTS/TOEFL only if that is not the case. So Sonam is not technically incorrect.
