Can't speak a word of Rajshtani, but I should claim it as my first language because my parents are Rajashtani. LOL. Okay. (edited) is being silly.

No it is not silly. Besides, my first comment was just a question, you jumped down my throat with a rationale that makes no sense to me. Here is my take on this- If you claim to be "good" at something, own it. Otherwise, stop making baseless claims.

No one is jumping down anyones throat. question or not, you implied it.

Yes I did and I stand by it. You can't accept my opinion, feel free to disagree and move on. Anyone who claims to be knowledgable on something better actually be good at it or there will be backlash. That is just how the cookie crumbles.

And for the last time, she did not say she knows English. She said English is her first language. I don't know about you but there's a huge difference between those two claims.

Your response to Sonam's claim of English being her first language was why is she inarticulate in it then?

You could have a first language or preferred language and still be inarticulate in it. Being articulate is not always dependent on language command. It depends on intellect and well rounded knowledge as well.

That is why you see so many people like Sarah Palin, the Robertsons from Duck Dynasty whose first language is English and English is the only language they know yet come across as dumb and inarticulate.

Sonam is inarticulate because she is not a well rounded person. She is ditzy and knows only stuff of fashion magazines. She would be equally inarticulate in whichever language she spoke in. I believe she has proven to be inarticulate in Hindi as well.

So should one be articulate in their first language?

If so what is Sarah Palin's first language since she is so comical in English?

What is Sonam's as she is inarticulate in both Hindi and English?

^you're debating about two different things.

1: Sonam claims she's book smart. Everyone by now knows she's not

2: You claimed that if someone knows English, they should be articulate.

Those are the two comments I filtered from what you posted.

I have had to mention Tamil and Malayalam as my first language even in job applications not just in India, but also in places like Hongkong and Singapore because that is my ethinicity...and I cannot speak a word of either. (This, I think is a very Asia specific thing! And agreed, no logic to this at all!)
Dex,
When you apply for an English teaching job in Indonesia, they mention that people belonging to certain countries only can apply (I think its Canada, US, England and Australia.)
Now I am not sure how they would count an Indian born and brought up in Canada or Australia like?😕 Same goes for a lot of schools in Hongkong too. It is mandatory for most primary schools in Hongkong to hire at least one 'Native English Speaker' and its mostly a Westerner.

Your comments are reasonable in thier own context. Although I perdonally think everyone that butchers any language should automatically not be allowed to gloat ( the way I saw Sonam do it here) about it. I don't claim any as my first. I'm not perfect in any. But that is my personal take and I digress.

Here's why I made my first post:

If I see another inarticulate Indian (insert any other origin if you so wish) actress claiming English to be her first language while at the same time claiming a Chinese actress' first language is Chinese (forget which other actress she mentioned), I will ask the same question: why are you so inarticulate in it then? Does Sona baccha automatically assume Chinese people no matter where they live or are born and brought up in only speak Chinese or claim it as thier first?

Her pretentious attitude brought on my comment. And no she's not getting a free pass. I believe I have now said my piece on this topic. Ciao. Can't be bothered to type anymore on the phone. 😆
