This is not the worst of it.

In Indonesia, Indians are not allowed to teach English in schools and Universities (despite havingproperprofessional qualificationsand complete fluency in the language) because English is not their 'first language'😕

Only Britishers, Americans and Australians are allowed to teach English in schools ect, because it is their 'first language'. And I have personally seen that a lot of Indians have a far, far better grip on the English language than these so-called native speakers.

That is probably because those schools want thier students to emulate American/British/Australian accent while speaking the language. Would they have an issue if an Indian with the above mentioned accents taught those kids? I doubt it. Correct me if I am wrong, though.

So Sindhis who speak Hindi and know little to no Sindhi--they should write their "first language" as...?

The Punjabis in Bollywood who don't speak or know Punjabi--their "first language" is?

Since her mother tongue or "first language" should be Punjabi or Sindhi (since it's tied to ethnicity by the argument presented here), then what makes Hindi more acceptable than English? Hindi and English are both official languages of India. She is not in any way wrong in saying English over Hindi. While her family may have also spoken Hindi, they surely would've also spoken in English which is also her language of education--thus she would've been more comfortable with English.

And to the argument that the family would not speak English. Watch The Inner World of SRK and see which language he uses with his children.

While in official capacity first language may mean mother tongue, what is wrong with Sanam talking of First Language as it's used in many normal usage. And I've always heard Indians use the term "mother tongue," and I know Indians themselves who have said their first language is Engish and ____.. So even if in official capacity it's to mean "mother tongue" I highly doubt that's how all Indians view those two terms when applying them in real life.

If you are planning to apply to a place like Delhi or Mumbai University, you might as well say that your first language is Rajasthani, when they ask for it. Because that is what they would be expecting you to write in their forms, irrespective of whether you can speak in it or not.

I have a better suggestion. Say Navajo or Iroquois instead.

They would. I know now it's changing, but I've had friends who were turned down for teaching jobs abroad due to their ethnicity even though they possessed American accents and were born and raised in the US.

At your quotation of my comment: if someone is going to be pretentious and claim rights on a language she has very little hold of, damn straight I or anyone else has every right to criticize that person. You claim to own something, then own it in every way or shut up. Sonam is just a fruit cake. I doubt she even reads anything other than fashion magazines. Again, nothing wrong with that but there's no use passing yourself as an intellectual when you're clearly not. Anyway, I digress.

Also, she didn't say she spoke the language. She said English is her first language. Big difference. Ergo, my comment is perfectly acceptable.

Who said you can't criticize her? I didn't say that.

First,

You just claimed that if someone's first language is English they should be articulate. Isn't this what you said?

Just because someone can speak, read and write English can't make them articulate in any form of shape. Sonam as silly as her comments are, she's maybe articulate or not it is up to whom ever to decide based on her comments.
But calming someone who knows English is should be articulate is completely silly thing to say.

English is my first language. I know I'm not articulate. I can't even properly write a full sentence sometimes.

Ahh okay. Well...then that's twisted. I would have understood if it was the accent issue because that plays such a huge role in making first impressions, whether we like it or not. But I don't understand rejection based on race, alone. Ahh well...I guess Indonesia was never known for bring liberal? 😆

Why not? If that is indeed your ethinicity.
But things are changing...a lot of Universities have stopped asking or Father's name and instead ask for either the Mother's name or just mention Guardian.
Some of them also have multiple choices in first language, where you can fill in the language of your ethinicity and English or whatever language that you are fluent in. (Though preferred langauge is almost, always asked.)

No it is not silly. Besides, my first comment was just a question, you jumped down my throat with a rationale that makes no sense to me. Here is my take on this- If you claim to be "good" at something, own it. Otherwise, stop making baseless claims.

And for the last time, she did not say she knows English. She said English is her first language. I don't know about you but there's a huge difference between those two claims.
