After the weak opening and I bet it was Amjad Khan's character "Gabar Singh" that brought in the crowds.

The most impactful scenes were of Gabar's and thakurs. That dialogue "Kitney aadmi thay" is the most quoted and is iconic. Also "Deday Haath Thakur".

For me Amjad Khan was the show stealer.

Dharmendra had numerous affairs, used to hang around Meena Kumari and ditched her after using her to get footing in industry, married another woman despite being married and father. Converted religion just to keep two wives. But lives only with first one not second despite having two kids with her. Hit a female journalist. He was drunk at Filmfare when he went to receive his lifetime achievement award. Pitch drunk and talking gibberish at a punjabi film award where he got an award and was talking ki maine kaam bhi bahut kiya hai aur sharaab bhi bahut pee hai (that hilarity was covered in all papers!), drunk and fighting with photographers at Esha's wedding.

Dharmendra/Dilawar Khan/Dharam Deol etc, is star of scandal rags!

What this illusion , just bcoz someone is favorite does not mean one will deny basic facts, figure, popularity etc.

Whole cable tv industry grew with repeat telecast of Amitabh movies. dont know how many times those movies like jangeer, don , coolie , hum , sakti, lawaris ,silsila , namak halal etc. were there in repeat telelcasted and all ad. were focused on amitabh dialogues. Very few known dharmendra movies were telecasted repeatedly. It itself speak the popularity. When a person who can still run KBC such a long time when other format like SRKs failed it itself says the acceptance level among indian audience . One cant help it if people just live in denial just bcoz amitabh born some other region in india. 😆

He was cleared in Bofors. There is no proof of role in 84 riots. The day it is proven I will accept it. Parveen's psychological issues were confirmed by her partners like Mahesh Bhatt and Danny so that death charge is hokum.

Dharmendra urf Dilawar Khan's acts are still visible to all to see for themselves.

Lastly I don't hate Dharam. I like watching old films and actors. But thanks to your posts I have to comment like this otherwise just not interested in personal lives.

You have just bias and twist facts due to obvious dislike. Disliking is okay but twisting facts or ignoring evidence is just a joke.

certainly I never thought like this while watching any popular movie of Amitabh or say dharmendra , we just enjoy movies. Any fact figure dont deny the popularity of Amitabh bachan among his contemporary . May be people have too much blind regionalism.

There was survey by India Today (which I also posted earlier) that estimated that one in every 6 Indians had watched Amitabh Bachchan films in cinema halls. Indiantelevision.com archives are there to see which star's films get top ratings. Zee Cinema had started Shanivaar ki raat Amitabh ke saath as a first in series of old stars' retrospective. Big B one got top ratings and drove channel to top in movie channels TRP. They then moved to other stars but their films did not get such response so they restarted Amitabh films only and that was runaway success. Set Max got boost in ratings with their Ab Tak Bachchan movie special. They continued it for years and always got boost in viewership.

Indiantelevision.com also estimated that there is not a single day when an Amitabh film is not being shown on some TV channel or the other.

Amitabh is just synonymous with success and domination. Whenever anyone succeeds he or she gets sobriquets related to Bachchan. When Ronit Roy gave string of successful serials in 2000s he was called Amitabh Bachchan of Indian TV. When females like Sridevi and Madhuri had great run they were called female Amitabh Bachchan. Even when that Mithun was getting success in B grade films he was called poor man's Amitabh Bachchan. Whenever any star later had extraordinary run, be it any Khan, he was likened to Amitabh Bachchan.

And this is for an actor who kept media banned for 16-20 years of his career and still is not friendly with them.

Indeed people are in denial if they think he is nothing or was media made or laggard.

All bias. The place of birth point makes sense.😉 He is Ganga kinaare wala and not Satluj kinaare wala.😆

@Atominis I'm not interested in personal lives either. I don't even like Dharmendra and neither did I ever claim he was bigger than Bachchan in this thread or the other. All I was disputing was your claim that Bachchan was a one man industry.

I'm done with this thread, it's getting tiresome now. But before I do, I just want to make myself clear, once again.

My dispute is to the claim that Bachchan is the biggest ever by a margin. My question then is why is his success ratio so poor compared to say, the Khans? If he was so popular why didn't he have a solo blockbuster, when Rajesh Khanna had many?Had just one ATBB in Sholay where he was like the 5th wheel? All this popularity stuff I've heard it all, but where is the box office success to supplement this?
