The film didn't really open well, it ran for many weeks. The major reason was Gabar

Gabar - Considering the movie didn't have a big opening and he was the one who stayed with people years after, so I guess he contributed the most to the WOM hype of the movie. It was "The " role of Amjad Khan's career. It was the time when villains were more iconic .

If Dharmendra was the "draw" then how come Sholay didn't open well and was initially touted as a flop?

This is the so called pull of "bigger" star? 😆

The combo power of other characters and performances, dialogues etc made this film what it is.

Question is about Who was the crowd puller, means who brought the audience to Cinema Halls before film Release, which is infact Dharmendra. Now what happens after is history, Biggest Hit of Indian CInema.

Thing about being flop initially n then became huge hit was trend in those days. Don (Amitabh) waali was also flop in initial week, then it go on to became big hit.

Before BIG B made his mark, it was Dharmendra bigger star than him, not bigger than Rajesh Khanna at that time but certainly bigger than Big B.

You talk about Legendary films lika Paa, Sarkar, while Same Big B has given Nishabd / Ramgopal Verma ki AAG kind of films also. Gabbar's role he wanted to do initially in original Sholay, didn't got chance, so he did in AAG, terribly fallen on floors, worst role of his career. He has done BOOM also. You see these kind of films, you will see other side of his persona.

So just saying Dharam is doing tinku jiya nowadays & have no star power, is lesser than Big B would not be right. At least he is not embarrassing himself like Rajesh Khanna / Big B doing those cheap scenes on screens.

The film didn't open well for many reasons, one of which was it was a remake of Dharmendra Vinod Khanna starrer super hit 'mera gaon mera desh' which was still running in theatres and all the bad reviews that sholay got where critics warned people to rather watch MGMD.

Speaking of star power, why was the comeback of 'the greatest superstar in the history of Indian cinema' such a dud which resulted in 5 back to back disasters? Mrityudaata, lal badshaah, kohraam, sooryavansham & hindustan ki kasam with the only saving grace being supporting roles in bade Miyan & major Saab? Why was such a demi god out of work, broke and had debtors up his you know what, so much so he had to beg Yash chopra for work?

KBC saved Bachchan. Stop spinning it like anyone actually cared for Bachchan over his contemporaries. He was forced to work due to his personal circumstances while the others have been comfortably retired for a while.

Your post about Big B reminded me of this blog article came few years back, have a look

People keep wondering about SHOLAY, the most successful movie in INDIA, a cult classic which spent years in various theatres of Bombay and other cities. The style, the dialogs, the eccentric villain and the never-seen-before locales created a strange amusement amongst the Indian movie connoisseurs. As a result, they worship the movie. Amitabh Bachchan shot to intense fame after the movie's release in the year 1976.

People went so crazy that they erected a temple at Calcutta, INDIA in the honor of Amitabh Bachchan where fans actually worship his idol. So now let me share the truth behind the making of Sholay. The SHOLAY recipe was simple. The famous writer duo of India, Salim-Javed clearly extracted the script from 4 wonderful western hollywood classics -

1. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
2. The Magnificent Seven
3. Once Upon A Time in The West
4. For A Few Dollars More

Each and every scene from the movie SHOLAY has been copied exactly from these four gems. The recipe consists of entire scenes from these 4 movies blended into similar Indian locales and then beautifully churned into a DESI Bollywood style storyline which also includes two beautiful actresses for the two handsome men and also a wonderful "dance-to-save-the-HERO" song.

Yes it has the same spice!

If you watch the 4 classics, you can immediately make out the prominent similarities. As a matter of fact, the evil laughter of GABBAR SINGH has also been portrayed exactly by Amjad Khan.
Now you know what magic can be created by adding a hint of Bollywood Spice to Four Great Hollywood classics! Enjoy the movies though!

Sorry 2 say our biggest film is also a copy from holly movies, script ghantaa this ismein 😆

Also by mid 80's Bachchan had overstayed his welcome with numerous disasters like agneepath, jaadugar, toofaan, indrajeet & many others. By the 90s he literally had 0 pull ending his first stint with disasters like a Khuda gawah, insaaniyat & akayla.
So much so for such a demi-god. The khans are way ahead in terms of success at age 45+ then Bachchan was. So I ask again, what makes Sr AB on some other planet than other stars? Oh yeah, nostalgia.

This has to be one of the most pathetic questions that I've come across in this miserable forum.

Really?
Dharam was established before but to say Amitabh was lagging in BO is all hokum. Dharam was just called Garam Dharam. No titles like Shehanshah or Big B or Superstar for him.

Amitabh was called one man industry by both Indian and western media.

He was first actor to get more than 1 crore as remuneration and first to get territorial rights of a film as part of remuneration. How did this happen if he wasn't a BO force? He was a powerful star which is why he got this.

He was featured 3-4 times by BBC. And when he featured for first time he was introduced as Asia's biggest star unlike Rajesh Khanna who had one docu on him calling him Bombay superstar. And Dharam was never featured anywhere except for handsomeness.

Dharam isn't embarrassing himself? You think Tinku jiya with a girl old enough to be his granddaughter was okay? He did kissing scenes with Nafisa in that Metro film. He has not done any significant work later.

Whereas this TM in this and other thread has been bashing Amitabh Bachchan and claiming he was inferior in BO or star power and in this thread he brought in failures of Aarakshan, Satyagraha etc to label him flop.

Amitabh is easily being called a media made star even though he had banned media throughout his prime and media too never featured him.

Dharmendra was more established than Amitabh and was senior. Who denies that? But film is memorable for all characters and especially Gabbar, Thakur and then Jai Veeru Basanti.

Acting wise greatest challenge was for Amjad and Sanjeev because their roles were not suited to their personality. The way they worked on their look, voice, expressions to fit in these roles is applause worthy.

I read that Amjad's casting was laughed at when this film was in making. Amazing how he nailed it.

+1

Salman's Debut MPK was 80's Biggest Grosser, while Big B was still ruling from 70-80. Audience was way bored of Big B's films, then only KHANS made their mark in Industry.

Big B is still bigger than Khans, but if u gonna put him above Dharmendra, then sorry to say with Debut films hi Khans ne Shehanshah of bollywood ko nichey bitha diya, Now media call Srk King Khan of Bollywood.
