Age is less of a barrier for male stars when picking roles. Aamir can play college student in 3I, RDB etc in his 40s and people buy it. But will they accept if Madhuri or Sri Devi play a college girl opposite Aamir now? I don't know if its a problem with audience mentality, but that's one of the reasons why we always have young heroines. Once they hit 35+, filmmakers and male leads starts looking for newer ones.

Well.. actually NO. Reason...women are simply objects...doesn't matter whether it's a sex object or Indian version barbie doll... And those roles can be replaced easily... One can find any woman to show off her body...KAtrina or DP or anyone else...does not matter at all. And things are gradually getting worse...Compare this decade's mainstream BB with 90'S movies... Even there women had a better condition as in storyline...I guess from 90's the biggest hits are HAHK and DDLJ. In both of the stories, if actress is removed, there's no story. And in post 2000 D3 and K2...!!
This was about their roles in movies... Now let's come to real life...BW is a chauvinistic misogynistic industry, its needless to say. As their fan base is extremely low in comparison to the actors, they get paid much less than actors. Their worth is always judged by their looks while with actors, it's not the case always. And another and the most important thing... actresses aren't into business, production thing too much or profitably. Because at the end, BW is business, and until women will lead it, nothing's gonna change. But its very tough in an industry where family like Kapoor doesn't encourage their daughters to pursue what they want(I'm not sure, but I've heard that either kareena or karishma faced this problem), when there've been always male stars.

I think audience mentality is also to blame. TV is supposed to be female dominated but even there they make 30 year old actresses play mothers or MILs to people of same age or half Their age. Teens are playing bahus.
Sakshi Tanwar is probably the only senior actress who gets good roles and solid paycheck. But even she gets paid less than Ronit Roy and Ram Kapoor. Females, even of more popular than males get paid less and find it tough to get good work consistently in medium that is supposed to cater to women.

It's audience which is to be blamed...PERIOD. And do we really have to think why is it so...? Literature, movies, media is a reflection of what's happening in the society. And just look at our society...Female infanticide, Rape, molestation, dowry demand... Indian society is one of the worst society for women in the world...(It's proved...sorry to say but in many surveys, it's been proved.) India was ranked with countries like afghanistan where Taliban prevails.

Definitely not comparable to her male counterparts, but Deepika definitely has that starpower...Katrina does most of the movies with established actors/old actors but Deepika did give 100 crore grossing Ramleela with a 3 film old Ranveer Singh! That is starpower IMO. And she has not restricted herself to work only with the Khans/Kumars/Kapoors. So compared to other actresses she does have star power..

Exactly ppl say Ranveer was an established actor .. Are you f**king kidding me? 😆 He became an established actor AFTER Ramleela ..

Aishwarya did in her peak. She was one of the first to get signed on before the hero does. That was a pretty big accomplishment. And she's smart moneywise/contract wise too.

Kareena had amazing influence.

And now Katrina does too. Honestly, do wish Katrina did less item songs though b/c she has that sort of command over the directors and industry where she can be choosy about things, but I feel like she isn't.

As for the BO pull, not everyone can be a Sri Devi. Now she had an immense power over the influences in her time. But it's all changing, the shelve life in exponentially increasing. The fact that 30+ actresses are being signed opposite the younger heroes is proof. And with more creative production and writing, it's gonna be close to equal one day. Hopefully, soon.

Recent list of highest paid TV stars, published by TOI estimated Sakhi's earnings less than Ronit and Ram.

TV industry is also misogynistic in its own way, though much less than film industry.
