PC's role could have been played equally well by Rani,Kareena,Tabu any good actress(Kashi was older than Baji Rao).Or even a good younger actor like Sanya,Mridul.They could all have been seen as overshadowing Mastani.

Did Karishma overshadow her though ? She was nice in it but the character was basically a prop. Madhuri s career waned because she was already a decade into movies and actresses had a short shelf life . She couldn't have possibly extended it into the 2000s as a typical heroine. It was the same for Aishwarya. By 2008 it was officially over for her. MD realised it was better to quit before things got worse ,got married and went away. Chandramukhi was a nice comeback but afterwards she was neither here nor there. There weren't any roles for 'older ' actresses in mainstream movies and she was not talented enough for Shabana Smita roles. That ghagra uthake agra viagra song was just embarassing.

Not to mention Karishma career didn’t exactly thrive post DTPH either, a few forgettable flops and then poof. Anushka still got better offers with better producers, directors, and even costars than Parineeti. and Kareena actually did way better than Priyanka after Aiteraaz.

Bajirao was actually the turning point, not in a good way. Despite the film's success, it was the beginning of Deepika’s slow fade. An older actress came in, stole the thunder, and Deepika’s stars clearly didn’t see it coming. Then came a string of woman-centric experiments trying to salvage some spotlight, but it’s only gone downhill, to the point where she's now cast as Suhana’s mom. Quite the fall.

She can carry western clothes as well, much better.

I am not questioning or saying Madhuri was any less, but she could have been much better way presented in DTPH.
