Ash marketed herself well and of course her beauty always gave her the added benefit. Despite flops she was able to sell herself as a product, which not many can do. You have to evolve and get with the times. See Amitabh though he went through a rough patch in the 90s he changed his whole carer through clever marketing and the ability to change as the times changed. The fact that most of Amitabh's contemporaries didn't make it this far, shows that not everyone is capable of doing it. I'm sure they would have jumped at the idea of being in Amitabh's shoes.
Just like Rishi, he literally died down in the 90's and early 00's but as soon as his son started catching attention he came out and used it for his benefit and look at him now. Same with Anil Kapoor, he was sort of there in the 00's but still not that important and was sidelined. Slumdog and his daughter made him prominent again.
Now that Jackie Shroff's, Suniel Shetty's children are coming they will try to come back in to the limelight as well and use the opportunity wisely. Otherwise who would have expected him to be in Dhoom 3?
The Khans all three have kept the spotlight on them always. Haters/Lovers please don't hate me for saying the next few lines on them. But SRK was the most relevant through out, he stayed relevant throughout the 90s and 00's and now, however SK and AK were there but they sort of slowed down in the 00's. SK more because of his flop films. AK was not in films for 3 years and the films that he did do some were great and others were really bad. SRK was the bigger Khan then. However the other two emerged and got back into the game, not that they left it entirely.
I feel that is always the same for Lifetime achievement awards, as soon as someone old is mentioned in someway, perhaps like the spoof of Manoj Kumar in OSO they suddenly are remembered and awarded the Life time achievement and then they are forgotten again.
Certain celebs, though bad actors are still remembered and revered years later. 20 years down the line even though Amisha was crap in her films post Kaho na pyar hai, but she will always be remembered for that. People will say she made an exceptional debut even though she later flopped really badly.
