Nobody called them flowerpot roles. They were good roles. But BW has always been this way. Without the star power of the male stars, most of the time movies never succeed. There were a lot of good actresses in BW in the 90's. DDLJ was originally supposed to go to Divya Bharti but she died. It would have still been a hit with her in it. Or with anyone - Juhi, Madhuri, any of good 90's actresses.

Kajol kept getting those roles because of her chemistry with SRK. When she acted with Ajay, it went nowhere. When she tried to strike out on her own like with We are Family, it doesn't work either. It's sad but that's how it is.

To be honest, if Divya had lived, most of the those SRK pairings would have gone to her. They had already made a successful pair with Dewaana and she was super-popular. SRK did a 2nd movie with her too. People thought she was going to be next Sridevi. She was supposed to do DDLJ too.

LOL thats farfetched...Its like saying Ranbir wud've been a better and bigger star than SRK if he debuted with SRK in the 90s and not 17 yrs later...Well I and many others dont think Mads or Juhi could have created the same impact if they starred in DDLJ instead of Kajol opp SRK...Kajol made Anjali/Simran look like characters tailor made for her...She was that BELIEVABLE and convincing that u cant even think of any other actress in her place...Kjo himself admitted he wrote KKHH keeping Kajol in mind...she was his first choice for Anjali even b4 SRK came into picture...Juhi and SRK have done numerous movies together but none of them could achieve iconic status of DDLJ...Mads did a similar romcom DTPH with SRK under Yash Chopra's direction(who as a director is widely acclaimed and considered much more talented than his own son and Kjo) still the movie couldnt break records set by DDLJ or create the rage SRK-Kajol pairing did after KKHH

Kajol is not some special snowflake that movies only work because of her. Besides her SRK movies and her one Aamir movie, what does she have? Without the male star's box office pull, she can't turn movies into hits. Her chemistry with SRK was a huge boon to her because without it, she wouldn't have even gotten most of those roles.

Good movies with good scripts can work with almost anyone. Same applies to SRK too. DDLJ would have worked with anyone, Aamir, Salman, whoever, any young decent actor. Same with Kajol. She did a good job but everyone is replaceable.

And seriously, I don't even like Madhuri but it's a not a good idea to bring her in to raise up Kajol. Hum Aapke Hain Kaun is a bigger hit than DDLJ and Madhuri is a bigger star than Kajol in general. She's way older than Kajol and she's still getting roles without having to rely on SRK or having her husband finance her a movie. They were flops but it's not like Kajol is getting hits either and she's so much younger.

You cannot take that away from an actress... You are making it look like that SRK-Kajol jodi is famous only because of SRK and their chemistry is only because of SRK! Had Divya been in the film, the film would HAVE NOT BEEN THAT FILM. Had Juhi, Madhuri been in DDLJ, The film would HAVE NOT got CULT Status it has today
DDLJ is first known for Raj and Simran aka SRK AND KAJOL and NOT ONLT SRK...

She is smart... WRF got a good opening and it didnt work because it was extremely dramatic.

You love Divya that is sweet, but taking away Kajol's huggest asset is not cool... Had Divya been alive, things might have been different but its better to live in present rather living in thoughts and dreams

But would SRK be the SUPERSTAR he became without DDLJ/KKHH ...ie without his films with Kajol?

They are his biggest successes, not his best films, but definitely played a massive role in the rage he created back then. Even overseas, the films of his that are most popular are with Kajol (most of which are associated with YRF/Dharma also). MNIK is still the biggest SRK hit overseas.

I mean why does SRK go back again and again to DDLJ? Why does he sing Tujhe Dekha everywhere? ...even his so called-big return CE is a complete DDLJ rip-off.

absolutely loved simran and raj. untouchable pair. also loved them in kkhh. i am not saying kajol is wooden plank or anything like that. but i find her many times annoying, screechy, over dramatic, etc...i don't think her k3g performance was anything great to be awarded. actually many found kareena OTT in k3g. but i feel kareena was poo to T.

anyways, this is just my opinion. i like kajol, but like i said, i feel is over rated like hell. and yes you are right, maybe she was awarded cos of popularity, which is a sad case anyways.

No one denied Kajol was not versatile...Yes she never went out of her comfort zone or attempted risky,bold roles...I am well aware Kajol cant be placed within the brackets of path breaking actresses like Vidya,Tabu,Manisha even Rani...But what happens in this forum ,is discrediting every bit of Kajol's achievement as an actress and attributing the entire credit of hers success and stardom of to SRK and luck ..Manisha,Juhi etc were better actresses than Kajol but couldnt become popular like her,..whats new in that? its norm of BW...Kangana,Vidya etc are better actresses than Deepika but they can never become a well known starlet like her...As talent isnt the only thing required to make it big in BW...All these facts are overlooked when it comes to Kajol though.
