I agree, Poppy.
This was all about Love and yet it went beyond 'Romance'.

The very nature of Love, genuine Love, is Transformation. It is meant to shake up your soul & spark it from within, meant to propel you to change Lives, yours or anyone else's. Meant to be a soul-cleansing experience.

I felt all of this, and more, while watching Highway.

Mahabir was Veera's Soulmate. Not in the conventional Forever sort of way. But a rip-you-apart-only-to-stitch-you-up way.

Mahabir cleansed Veera & her soul & Veera returned it in such a way , that they both shone through their imperfections & formed a Genuine Bond.

One where silences speak more than words, where there is comfort in Today because of the one person seated next to you.

Reminded me so much of Rumi's (faux) simplistic & deeply profound quote - "The Wound, is the place, where the Light enters you."

Veer & Mahabir, to each other, were the Light that Lit them from within.

Highway First Weekend Business

Highway grossed around 13-13.25 crore nett in its first weekend. The film had an upward trend over the weekend but due to a slow start at most places it needed a bigger jump on Saturday. The growth had to be over 50% but was around the 35% range.

The film was released on just over 700 screens which helped the film as it was not playing in places where it had little chance of collecting. Today films which only have chances at city multiplexes are going to 1200 plus screens and most of these films hardly have collections at places.

Highway was restricted to 1-2 screens at multiplexes with only better collecting multiplexes going to two screens and the single screen was very limited to a few big cities. The weekend breakdown of the film is as follows.

Friday - 3,25,00,000

Saturday - 4,50,00,000

Sunday 5,25,00,000 - 5,50,00,000

It's wonderful to see so many amazing reviews. I have always craved to see a certain kind of boding between a guy and a girl which might not necessarily be romantic but strong enough to leave a huge impact on each other and one gets to hardly see such bonding on screen. It's rare. That's precisely the reason why I liked Shanghai despite the n no. of problems I personally had with that movie.
I don't know how many of you found the "Maine Kaha tha na scene" funny, I did find it idiotically funny instead of getting ridiculed. Vinay gadha kahika. 😆 I think Randeep has entered my Milind Soman jaisa haawwt wala list finally. 😆

P.S. Ayyo! What do I see? Everyone is saying that JWM is overrated and LAK is bad.😭 I liked both the movies. JWM for most obvious reasons and LAK for it's energizing songs. I absolutely love them.

P.P.S. Yo B!(This sounds cool) Crayon has completed her assignment and submitted it too. She also thinks that it's one of the worst assignments she has ever written.😆 I see you are stepping aside from this thread. I think I'm somewhat able to remove it from my mind thanks to my idiotic friends who do not seem to be interested in this movie at all.😆 It was nice sharing memories of Kavi, Shiv and Khotey sikkey with you. Have a good time. 🤗

P.P.P.S. Anupama Chopra's and Masand's reviews are crap. Period. At least that's what I would like to believe. 😆

  • 'Highway' fares well in USA-Canada, UK, UAE-GCC

  • By Taran Adarsh

HIGHWAY has met with mixed response. The film has fared well in U.S.A.-Canada, U.K. and U.A.E.-G.C.C., but is low in Australia and New Zealand. HIGHWAY Overseas total *after opening weekend* is approx $ 900,000 [Rs 5.58 cr]. GUNDAY has declined considerably in Weekend 2 ... Tamil film AAHA KALYANAM, the remake of BAND BAAJA BAARAAT, is a disaster in U.S.A., Canada, U.K., Australia and New Zealand.

Thank goodness for protests/strikes at our Uni today... got to go out with friends instead and finally watched Highway. (SPOILERS AHEAD)

My word. Well, firstly can I just say... Alooo 😭😭😭 kamaal, dhamaal, bemisaal... I am so glad I did not trash you after SOTY ⭐️ She was SOOO GOOD! Vast/Massive improvement! I think she'd do really great in melodramatic roles.. Shanaya from SOTY was kinda melodramatic too. Eagerly awaiting to see more of Aliaa in 2 States. 😛

Randeep ❤️ This guy. A gem. Mahabir 💔 The way he cried outside when Aloo was preparing the house... and that moment where he fighting her but she kept cradling him. Damn. The moments and dialogues between them especially when Aloo says: "I'm starting to find you cute" - memorable.

Okay, I may have not liked the way Mahabir dies abruptly but maybe it was meant to be as in it added to the "too good to be true" aspect (or maybe I'm just a sucker for a lovey dovey ending). As usual I just enjoy the characters in Imtiaz Ali's flicks. Veera and Mahabir and their journey was just fabulous. ⭐️ I like that the way the whole molestation subject was approached in the film and that too without anything too vulgar. 👏 And can I just add that Aliaa rocked when she was dancing to the English music 😆 #WerkIt

From me, 3.5/5 for Highway ⭐️ (this movie did not have my type of genre of songs nor dancing nor anything that would usually attract me to the movie - I just watched it for Aloo and to see how she did in the film after being impressed with the trailer and she hasn't disappointed and neither has Highway. I am surprised I liked the film but then again not so surprised at all.) 😊

Loved the movie !! Alia and Randeep were brilliant !! Great music by ARR !! Imtiyaz ali executed it really well !! Overall a soulful/heartwarming and a hard hitting movie !! Keep it up Imtiyaz Ali !!👍🏼

Two individuals with troubled/abused childhood/frustration/sorrow come together and how they find their solace/securities in each other / away from the cruel world - wonderful bonding/journey !!

6/5 stars !!👍🏼

She said that the film propagates kidnap as being therapeutic and gives the message that if one is kidnapped, they should use it as an opportunity to heal themselves as they travel through the countryside, which is what disturbed her...

That has to be one of the stupidest things ive read in a review...if the character finds solace in what is an inherently traumatic situation, then the story is clearly using irony to get its point across ...it does not mean the film is recommending people to go get kidnapped to get a deep introspection of their life... It just so happens that this character came across such an ironic situation...tht dosent mean the director suggests or recommends this for everyone...wht kind of mucked up logic is that?

Thats like saying films which show the hero and heroine hating each other and then falling in love give out the message that girls and guys should hang out with people they hate in order to find true love...😕😆...it obviously cannot be the fact that those films were using irony to point out that love can be found in unexpected places...similar to highway which says peace/comfort can be found in unexpected places...Like in JWM, Geet misses her train, gets stranded on a creepy station, finds aditya who eventually becomes the love of her life...does that mean JWM was giving out the message to young adults to get stranded on creepy stations to find ur true love? the films are not asking u to actively look for unexpected places to find love/peace..its saying that u CAN find love/peace ieven if u are in an unexpected place coz life is unpredictable...geez...the amount of over analysis of components in isolation without looking at the bigger picture is so baffling...

BAHAHAHAHAHA. She's taking this film literally. LOL. That's the sad part of people not understanding art. you aren't suppose to take it literally. 😆

Ok so I havent read any critics reviews and havent gone through all the reviews in this thread but I finally watched the movie today and I am still numb with the journey that I took along with Highway..
this movie comes in the category where you have to be in a certain state of mind to understand the movie and more than that FEEL it...something which was little missing during Rockstar...I loved Ranbir in the movie but certain things were not handled properly and left unexplained...

Highway was altogether a different experience...I was completely lost since the very beginning!

Alia was completely in the character and made Veera alive onscreen...she was VEERA Tripathy...just too good in every frame of the movie..from the moment Veera was kidnapped and the scene where she tries to escape but fails...BRILLIANT! 👏
I couldnt believe she is the same girl who debuted with something like SOTY and here this is the same girl who is giving a performance of a lifetime, something which will be remembered for years...👍🏼
the monologue when she opens up abt her horrible experience as a 9 year old was gut-wrencing..I couldnt hold back my tears...she was sooo good in that scene..completely nailed it!

Randeep was terrific as Mahabir...the angst and the depth in his character was so damn well portrayed by him...when Sooha Saha was being played, one could actually feel the pain he went through as a child..the growth in his character from being a mean and brutal kidnapper to a caring and loving man towards Veera was very well directed and acted by him!

their relationship was just not romantic...I felt it was more like soulmates who found solace and peace with each other...it wasnt about just being physical..it was more of an emotional connect...it was just beautiful :)

I personally felt that this was Imtiaz's best work ! 👍🏼
He made me FEEL in every single scene..kept me hooked until the end..it wasnt the Stockholm Syndrome that lot of ppl are talking abt...its more of a soul-stirring experience...a journey that never ends or rather you dont want to end...

ARR's music was like magic which made the movie flow so brilliantly...loved every composition...too much brilliance in one film and of course cannot finish this review without mentioning Anil Mehta's sheer brilliance camera work...gosh India is so so beautiful...

kudos to the entire team to make the film the way it has turned out...brilliant piece of work!

*SPOILER*
1. the scene when Mahabir was shot dead completely shook me..somewhere I was hoping that he would survive
2. the pre-climax scene where Veera confronts the family about child abuse was only the weak point in the film IMHO...I couldnt help but compare that to the Monsoon Wedding where Shefali's character did something similar...she was bloody brillaint in that scene...here Alia was good no doubts but the other scenes in the movie...she completely nailed them!!

*END OF SPOILER*

rating : I would just say that such films shouldnt be rated on the scale of 1-5...just go watch it and FEEL IT!! 😛

I loved Highway, it was nice, refreshing and emotional. I sort of get where some critics talk about there being a few amazing sequences far and between, and the problem with the length as well, but all I'd say is that those silent, dragging moments were necessary to build up towards the climax. It was totally worth it, I loved the ending too. Alia was brilliant in a sequence just after the interval and the last 15 minutes of Highway, and she was consistent through the rest of the film. Randeep was awesome too, he is SO underrated. This is probably not Imtiaz's best work, Socha Na Tha and Jab We Met are still up there, but it's definitely better then Love Aaj Kal and Rockstar, WAY better.

ARR's music was the soul of the film, he tells a story through his music! Patakha Guddi and Maahi Ve stood out.
