i felt it was more like she found a friend/confidant/father /guardian figure in her life because she grossly lacked one all her life...like the man who abuses her was MEANT to be a father figure to her but she obviously despises him and yet still had to be nice to him throughout her llife, she dosent feel very close to her father because she dosent confide her truth to him...when she does confide to her mom, the mom brushes it under the carpet...so i really think the fact tht she confided to mahabir and felt more "protected" with him was because he was kinda like the family/guardian she never had...

i actually never thought their chemistry was ever "romantic" ...

It wasn't..Baradwaj Rangan aptly calls it as a parent-child relationship that neither had..he becomes her father protecting her, she his mother caring for him..

I think Ali conceptualized it as a romantic relationship-because there are some scenes from Mahi Ve missing but Aarti Bajaj(who BTW has done an amazing job) chopped them..I like the final cut more because it was nicely balanced between the extremes of platonic and physical

Same here! Why are critics so hung-up upon Veera opening up about her past or for that matter the abruptness of her confession? It is one of the most heartbreaking monologues ever seen in a hindi film...focus on that, dammit! Rather than why Veera does it or when she does it!
Her choice of words, which she uses to describe her ordeal was simply gut-wrenching and the way she talks...she takes the viewers to her very mind and makes us experience the horror and shock of a 9 year old going through sexual abuse at the very hand of someone she trusted.
Alia was bloody brilliant in the scene...I could not believe that here was this same girl who could barely even play the bimbo in SOTY last year and is now giving the performance of a lifetime! Even Randeep, who is kept in the background while Veera speaks...just look at his expressions when she starts speaking about her past and the way he stops eating and stares at her back with a look of absolute shock.
The scene was justapoxed very well in the film...and the abruptness or out of blue moment is quite apt given Veera's character...she has just been looking for that moment...that outlet when she could pour her heart out and she found it in the man, who let her speak without interupting or trying to avoid it.

I was searching for "hints" of a romantic relationship in the film, because that's what we tend to look at most in movies (love, chemistry and so on 😉)

Didn't find it a direct mention/hint in the film though, and that scene when Veera confesses that she doesn't want marriage or kids was probably the director's way of answering these questions.

The points Baradwaj Rangan made are very, very valid- I'll admit I didn't quite see the film in the same light originally 😊

But as you've mentioned, the editor's chopped off a couple of scenes that could have hinted at budding romance (1:46 of the official Maahi ve song by the Tseries Youtube channel for example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHLnZMjJ8bY)

Why I could see romance

1.) The Chandigarh bus stand scene. When he smiles and she sighs and smiles in relief.

2.) Blocking his path in the bus with her knees.

3.) The English dance, felt somewhat sensous to me, and Hooda's reactions.

4.) The parts on top of the bus.

5.) The "cute lagne lage ho" dialogue in the beginning.

Maybe we need to start a poll to see how many people saw romance in the movie, and how many did not. Would be very interesting to see.

This last bit is completely my POV though- people would have veered more easily to a romantic relationship if the lead actress was closer to Randeep's age (Anushka, Deepika, Sonam or others)

By selecting someone like Alia (who looks very, very young in comparison to Randeep), Imtiaz has left the option of a platonic, non romantic relationship as a real possibility.

@bold - couldnt agree more
infact her confession to me came out right in sync -coz just before that she chose to trust her kidnappers more when the police guys came to search that track...when she said that she could have run away but she dint - that was one hell of a moment - it paved way for the confession - she chose to trust that brooding man...she chose to open her heart out to him...
man Veera...Veera...Veeraa...what a phenomenal character...
and yeah, Alia...oh boy, I totally couldnt stand her in SOTY and offscreen before this movie...and had written her off - going by Pari's and Anushka's performances - I was sure, Alia dint stand a chance and highway was going to be a bummer with another miscast - like Nargis in Rockstar
BUT, the girl surprised me, shocked me and left me baffled with the hidden potential in this one- she has a lot more in her which hasnt even fully come out in highway I feel..like the sharpening of the saw is required but talent is clearly there...and again, m in awe of her singing too...sooha saha is just brilliant - and surprisingly Alia's voice adds such a wonderful layer to the song - an unmatchable hope, enthusiasm to give life a chance...to Mahabir...Imtu scored big time - as a director who could pull out what is there in Alia...just wish that this doesnt turn out to be like a one film wonder for her like Sona in lootera...or Sonam in Ranjhanaa...
I truly want this girl to excel now, just because she gifted me a valuable cinematic experience with bringing alive Veera in an amazing way...

I think there were enough hints of romanticism if one wanted to find it. It was a love story, but not the kind we expect.
The way Mahabir looks away when Veera adjusts her bra strap, the way they are almost always physically close to each other, the way he freaks out when he does not see her on bed in the morning, the way Veera cuddles up to him while he is carrying her- everything points to the subtle romantic connotations of the film.
I like how Imtiaz has deemed us intelligent enough to decide for ourselves. And about that beautiful surrogate parent-child analogy, that is the case with most relationships. We all look for the image of our parents in our relationships. For them, it was more obvious because they were so damaged and complicated.
Their relationship is beautiful that way. There were hints of friendship, romance, physical attraction and oedipal-electra complexes at the same time. Which makes the love story so unique.

Have been going through each and every page of this review thread and all your reviews were just brilliant. Loved reading the in depth analysis of certain scenes ,it really felt like I watched the movie once again as I read all your takes. Especially usernameloading, stargirl, poppy, mallika e bhais and also by bharadwaj rangarajan which someone shared,to name a few.

Regarding the movie, what can I say, which hasn't already been said by you all. It was a surreal experience,it was soul cleansing,it was pure and divine. While watching the movie,I was riveted. It was as if I was with Veera and mahabir ,a silent spectator during their journey,it didn't feel like watching a film.

Almost all the scenes, you guys mentioned were top notch be it the scene in which she comforts him,the scene in which she confesses about the trauma she went through, their first hug,his first smile, her dancing to the English song with gay abandon, the scene where she sits on the rock amidst the flowing water, contemplating, laughing as she soaked up the beauty around her and then bursting into tears, the silences in between, everything was beautiful.

Randeep was a marvel.Even with just few scenes,he stood out. His eyes speak out a thousand words and his body language was perfect. And Alia, words fail me. I could feel her happiness, her horror as she recounts what she went through and when she addresses her family, her heart wrenching sadness as she screams out mahabir's name in the end, wanting to be safe inside the warmth of his arms around her. I sobbed my heart out in the last half hour and at the same time I smiled through tears that she had finally found her freedom,as she leaves her family for good.

This movie will always remain close to my heart. There was a simplicity and beauty in this film which has captivated so many hearts including mine <3

Aaah..a fellow romantic..😆

Didn't find it a direct mention/hint in the film though, and that scene when Veera confesses that she doesn't want marriage or kids was probably the director's way of answering these questions.

But did you notice the question: Randeep asking her about marriage and kids provides enough undercurrents to the is there/is there not equation..After observing and experiencing a lot of life, I've come to the conclusion PURE platonic relationships are very rare..you put a boy and a girl together sparks are going to fly..There is no doubt about the physical attraction..It was all there..but along with fulfilling the typical boy-girl relationship, they also plugged in the gap of parental love..and it's not really that uncommon..guys want a girl like their mum..girls a guy like their dad..If I had to describe their relationship I'd call it that of partners😳
This is my interpretation..though I like Rangan's a lot too

The points Baradwaj Rangan made are very, very valid- I'll admit I didn't quite see the film in the same light originally 😊

2.) Blocking his path in the bus with her knees.
This has to be one of the best scenes..so much conveyed without words

Yes..I agree with this..A lot of us who are saying "glad it wasn't a typical love relationship" would probably be saying "uggh! but I was so shipping them together"😆
That's the beauty of the human mind..And that's what Ali understands really well

@Annie, I found the film deeply romantic on some levels...its just that the romance is not the obvious kind of romance that we are usually treated too in our films...but there was some chemistry between them...I am referring to both the actors and the characters here!

The fact that Mahabir is not shown even remotely interested in Veera probably accentuated the love story instead of diluting it!
That small scene where they are both sitting on top of the Bus and he shares his blankie with her...😳 It was so, so, so sweet! Also, their scene in the cottage, when he picks her up and takes her inside, puts her down and sleeps besides her, while she unhesitatingly curls up to him (actually lies on top of him, and still the scene had no sexuality about it, just felt so warm and cuddly and awww types!)...Immy really nailed it with this film!
@Usernamelaoding...I was shipping them together😆 I really was! And I was also the one who went ewww when I saw the promo's of them together...but the same Alia who made even youngsters like Varun and Siddharth look like her older brothers somehow shared such an easy chemistry with Randeep who must be atleast 15 to 20 years her senior!
This is where Imtiaz scores as a director...you sell the story to the viewer and make them accept your vision, no matter how weird it sounds on paper!
I loved the ending...and I also loved the whole 'were they or were they not in love' angle between Mahabir and Veera but I would have also loved if the film had ended shown them living together in the end! The story and the characterisations convinced me for this impossible sounding probability also!

^^ I absolutely agree.
While the movie had no overtly romantic theme, it touches upon a kind of romance and a feeling of love and bonding that exceeds conventional notion of romantic love.
It was almost a spiritual connection, a deep, melting into each other- bonding. This kind of love is so, so rare in Bollywood movies. And Mahabir'r indifference is the driving force of the story.
The blankie scene was adorable.
However, when Rangan is saying how Veera informs Mahabir in no "uncertain terms" that she has no plans to marry him, or have children with him, he is missing one pivotal point.
Their relationship was never about marriage or children or the traditional idea of romance. That is why, right after the moment she says those things, she says that "she has no plans at all..". She just wants to go with the flow. She never says no to love, she says no to planning. Understandable, she is a girl whose whole life must have been planned to the point of suffocation by her entire family. She just wants to travel with him, to be free. That, in a word, summarized their relationship.
