'Gunday' All Set To Take A Good Opening

By Joginder Tuteja, MovieTalkies.com, 13 February 2014 09:55 AM IST

The stage has been set, red carpet rolled out and trumpets ready to be blown. Gunday is arriving amidst good buzz and hype which means if the content is good, sky is the limit for this Aditya Chopra production. The promo has clearly been one of the most liked on this side of the year, the songs are popular too, the 'jodi' of Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor is looking good, Priyanka Chopra is adding a huge weight to the affairs while Irrfan Khan's presence is only making the film look better. With the entire packaging right, Ali Abbas Zafar has a job in hand which is simple - 'Deliver a good film'!

With good excitement amongst the audience, the film should open quite well at the box office, both at the multiplexes and the single screens. Releasing at a good screen count, an average opening around the 60% mark is on the cards with mass belt multiplexes and single screens expected to cross the 80% mark, which should be good enough to result in a very healthy total. Unless the film is a letdown (which doesn't seem to be the case), the weekend should only gain further momentum, which anything in the upwards of 40 crore is a good possibility.

The film is already being looked at as a 100 crore success in the offering and with the advantage of solo release as well as Valentine's Day occasion, Gunday has in it to score well. As things stand today, this could well be the first bonafide hit of 2014.

PRIYANKA CHOPRA

Starring: Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapor and Priyanka Chopra

Director: Ali Abbas Zafar

Rating: Three stars

Ali Abbas Zafar's directorial debut Mere Brother Ki Dulhan was about two brothers falling in love with the same girl. His second film Gunday has a fresh plot where two friends (who are like brothers) fall in love with the same girl - the kind of originality that almost choked me! But it doesn't mean it's a bad film.

The film starts in 1971 with two young refugee boys Bikram (Ranveer-still-sporting-Ramleela-look-Singh) and Bala (Arjun-ample-cleavage-on-display-Kapoor). They land in India against the poster of Amitabh Bachchan's Zanjeer (a 1973 release) that magically appears two years earlier in Gunday for that period film' effect! Or was Aamir Khan marketing Zanjeer back then?

Bikram is logical, Bala is short-tempered and circumstances change them into criminals who finally become the most powerful daredevil duo in Calcutta. It was such a delight to see kids turning into adults as the camera pans from their feet to their faces, an Eighties clich rarely seen these days.

Fifteen years later, the police wake up to catch the coal bandits. Enter Satyajit Sarkar (Irfan-the-best-actor-ever-Khan) with his wicked plan. Then there is a love angle too. Nandita Das (Priyanka-I-am-so-eggzaaatic-Chopra) who is a cabaret dancer and has both the friends floored. She keeps them guessing about her love interest that leads to a murder, runaway sequences, misunderstandings and the climax brilliantly shot in a coal mine.

Gunday is something that you have not seen before. It's like the dustier version of Dhoom. But it's done well. Directed well. Shot well. Usually Hindi films have inconsequential sequences - Gunday steers clear. Every, correction, most of the scenes have a purpose and a context.

The dialogues (by Ali Abbas Zafar) help too - Pistol ki goli aur ladki ki boli, dono se jaan khatre mein hoti hain. It's this ladki factor of the famous zar zoroo zameen (money, woman and land) that causes friction between friends and furthers the plot. Though the film suffers from some banalities as well, dosti aur pyaar ke beech mein kisko chunoge or the classic ek taraf mera farz hai, toh doosri taraf mera pyar!! Big YAWN! The film tries to pack in a surprise towards the end, alas way too easily predictable!

Irshad Kamil is the only lyricist (after Gulzar sahib) who fleetingly and aptly mentions Ghalib in his songs. His fun play of words in Tune maari entriyaan dil mein baji ghantiyaan, brilliantly composed by Sohail Sen stands out!

Arjun Kapoor puts a lot of effort in his performance and it shows. Ranveer Singh is a tad more comfortable and confident. He even gets his gh' and kh' right, from the epiglottis! Rizwan Khan from My Name is Khan will be very impressed. Priyanka Chopra might not be the best actress but she looks GORGEOUS! She shows promise and lots of bare back to the point that it seemed one of the characters in the film - Hi, I am Nandita (turns around) and this, IS MY BACK!

My final words:
Gunday presents a familiar story interestingly.
Priyanka Chopra is HOT!
It brings the city of Kolkatta to life.
Priyanka Chopra is HOT!
Irfan Khan's eyes deserve a special Oscar.
Priyanka Chopra is HOT!

If you can read between the lines (LITERALLY!) you would have at least one reason to go and watch the film.

Gunday Likely To Benefit From Valentine Day Release

Gunday is likely to benefit from a Valentines Day release despite it not being a love story or rom-com. It has been seen over the last few years that Valentines Day does generate extra footfalls at theatres irrespective of genre.

The collections mainly get a boost at multiplexes while at single screens business is normal. The extra business is not much as a holiday but the film can expect 10-15% more on its opening day than it would have otherwise collected on a normal day.

Gunday is a film where the product has made a bigger impact than the stars in the film with its promos and music creating the desired impact. Over the last year the films which got an initial due to the product instead of the star/stars did very well in the final count like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Grand Masti and Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram Leela. It remains to be seen if Gunday joins the list and become the first hit of the year..

Review:

Set in the 1970s against the backdrop of Bangladesh Liberation War when an independent Bangladesh was formed, the film tracks the life of Bikram and Bala (Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor), two orphans who are caught up in the chaos. Inseparable since childhood, the two friends grow up to be coal bandits after shifting base to Kolkata. Their solidarity and comradeship is well known all over Kolkata. The two best friends soon become the most influential goons in the city. They fall in love with a cabaret dancer Nandita (Priyanka Chopra). ACP Satyajeet Sarkar (Irrfan Khan) sets out to put an end to their black market business. How the Bikram and Bala's friendship survives through all these hurdles forms the rest of the plot.

YashRajFilms

Indestructible friendship, chemistry, a hint of romance, a lot of action and high-on-emotion sequences - 'Gunday' has it all in good amounts. The director Ali Abbas Zafar has come a long way since his last film 'Mere Brother Ki Dulhan'. 'Gunday' is far better in terms of editing, cinematography and depth. It is fast paced, power packed and fierce. The characters are brilliantly etched and Ranveer and Arjun's bromance is something that the men will look up to in the coming years. Even with its highs and lows in the plotline, never does the film lose its momentum. When Irrfan's track merges with that if Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, the film gradually progresses into an investigative flick. The climax is bound to leave you speechless. The cinematographer Aseem Mishra deserves a special mention for capturing each and every setting brilliantly.

Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor's chemistry is the USP of the film. The two infuse undying energy into every frame they appear in. Both characters completely different from each and yet so similar, Bikram and Bala are the epitome of bromance. They're hilariously amusing and fierce with equal finesse. Ranveer is setting the bar higher up with each film and Arjun Kapoor has done exceedingly well, considering it is just his second film. Watch out for these two performers in the future. Priyanka Chopra looks hot as ever but her character's styling looks awfully out of place. While the rest of the characters look every part of the 1970s,Priyanka Chopra looks straight out of a high-on-glamour 2014 flick. Needless to say, Irrfan Khan delivers a stunning performance as the cunning cop.

Sohail Sen's music is already hogging the charts. All the tracks are high on energy and enjoyable. If you're not hooked on to 'Tune Maari Entriyaan' yet, wait till you walk out of the theatre. 'Jiya' and 'Jaan-e-Ishqa' too, are wonderfully composed.

Verdict: Ranveer and Arjun Kapoor's bromance is one of the best you would have ever seen on celluloid. There is no way you should miss out on 'Gunday
