Khan is genetically engineered. He is from India, i.e. he was 'made in India' but he is not necessarily Indian. He's a hybrid of a varying number of different races (confirmed by my dad whose been a major trekkie for 30+ yrs), hence it's not whitewashing. Having said that Khan has always annoyed the hell out of me because there's a clear anti-muslim/arab/Indo-Pak agenda in the portrayal of the character.

On another note if they did cast an Indian I sure as hell hope they wouldn't head to Bollywood, most of them can't act for shite. Personally I would go for someone like Ayad Akhtar, Faran Tahir, Riz Ahmed, Naveen Andrews, Sendhil Ramamurthy, etc.
