IPL viewership on the rise again

While TRPs further dip, causes loss of 100 GRPs of GECs

As compared to the last season, the first week of IPL 6 has a 3.8 TRP, point one lesser than IPL 5. However, compared to the 79 million-strong viewership during IPL 5 (after being broadcast on a single channel), the numbers for this season have surged to a sharp 100 million, riding on the facts that it was broadcast on two channels — Max and Six — and
for the first time, included Hindi commentary.
And while the opening ceremony netted a 1.8 rating, which is nothing to boast about, it is a definite improvement from last season's 1.2 points. In sharp contrast is the sudden drop of almost 100 GRPs in the General Entertainment Channels (GECs) ratings this week. And experts believe IPL is the main reason behind the steep fall.
This, despite the fact that there were six matches played in the fifth edition as compared to five in the ongoing season.
Moreover, while the opening match between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians last season raked in a TRP of 5.5, the inaugural match this season between team Delhi Daredevils and team Kolkata Knight Riders registered only 4.1 TRPs. However, the ratings of the last match in week one surpassed
the ratings of corresponding
match of the previous season by point-eight. That being said, IPL 6 has failed to cross the 4+ mark. (Look at the table above.) Experts blame the confusion post digitisation for the dip.
