The After Hrs review: Ek Tha Tiger

Film: Ek Tha Tiger
Director: Kabir Khan
Cast: Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Girish Karnad, Ranveer Shorey
Rating: ***1/2

When you say Salman Khan, you expect a Dabangg! When you say Kabir Khan, you expect a New York! And when you say Yash Raj, you expect a Dilwale… But put the three together, and what you actually get is Ek Tha Tiger, which is a mishmash of all three unique styles. Unfortunately, in this bid to synchronise these styles, there's a lot that seems to have been compromised on all the three fronts.

So the Tiger seems to be on a leash here as the trademark Salman madness is clearly missing from this one. But in exchange of that Dabangg masala, thanks to the Kabir touch, the film at least has some gravitas which is more than any of Salman's recent blockbusters could boast of. The Chopra brand of romance too just about manages to skim on the surface without sinking in too deep. But, as tough as it may be, put the expectations that come with these brand names aside, and you will find it hard to not join in the whistling crowds as Salman lands his first solid kick to the baddie a few minutes into the film. It's a full on adrenaline rush from then on till the next fifteen minutes or so. And as Salman walks on to the screen as the larger than life Tiger, with the music matching steps with the hero, you know you are hooked!

The action sequences are one of the best we've seen here (take a bow Conrad Palmisano) and are at par with the international action thrillers. Salman on his part does full justice to them as Tiger. But who is Tiger? Well he's a RAW agent, who when not kicking ass in exotic foreign locales, lives in a modest government quarter, where his neighbours can't seem to figure what he really does for a living. Work apart, he seems to have little or rather no attachment to anything else. But when his boss Shenoy, (Girish) sends him to Dublin on an assignment, it turns out to be a life-changing one for this top agent, who till then had devoted his life to the country. The devotion is now aimed in the direction of Zoya (Katrina) who he meets while on this mission. But everything is obviously not as easy as it seems. Soon it becomes a matter of love over duty and the Tiger, from the hunter becomes the hunted by both — the RAW and the ISI.

The brilliant action sequences apart, the story has several loopholes, but let's not even get there. Remember, this is a Salman Khan movie! So, even though he seems restrained when it comes to the dialoguebaazi and the masala that the audience has so come to love and associate with him by now, he does pack in a punch. He overcomes the other shortcomings of the film in true hero-style. Katrina seems to have as much screen time as her body double has in the stunt scenes, but she doesn't fail to impress and is actually quite good. As for the chemistry between them…Oh yes, there's ample of that in between the 'stars' and the 'tangri' kebab moments. The lakeside scene does win the most cheesy points when it comes to romance.

Girish Karnad, Ranveer and Gavie are convincing, though we wish there was more for Ranveer to do. He genuinely cracks some witty ones, while Salman refrains from them. The editing is crisp, the pace fast and the music, well the Mashallah is certainly the best of the lot. Overall, it's a treat for action lovers and a bigger one for Salman fans. They may not dance as much in the aisles as they did for Dabangg, but this one's total paisa vasool too. So, dekhna toh banta hai boss!

Ek Tha Tiger is paisa vasool entertainer!

Director: Kabir Khan
Cast: Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif

Salman Khan is a species that invites admiration and applause in any kind of film format or movie genre. Off late we have seen enough of him in mindless comedies and inflated action flicks. But the Yash Raj banner and, more particularly, director Kabir Khan project him in a sober, suave and sensible way over his patented pedestrian image. And since the film follows a sane storyline over silly slapstick, one is able to appreciate and enjoy it better.

In the prologue chase-sequence where he is introduced as an intelligence officer on assignment in a foreign country, Salman Khan escapes his opponents by splurging money in an open market and subsequently camouflages in the crowd that is busy pouncing on the currency. Be rest assured that what follows would be 'paisa vasool' entertainment.

Tiger (Salman Khan) is an Indian intelligence officer who's sent by RAW to Dublin to keep an eye on a science professor. There he comes across Zoya (Katrina Kaif) and expectedly falls for her. Until it turns out that even Zoya is on an undercover mission. Now Tiger has to choose between duty and love.

Aditya Chopra sketches his story on the unusual premise of what would happen if an Indian intelligence officer falls in love with a Pakistani spy. The conflicts in the love story come quite naturally through the animosity between the two neighbouring nations, prevalent for decades. On a broader level the film implies how love can overpower all inherent differences. Yet it never makes a very conscious attempt to sound preachy or positive about the state-of-affairs between the countries. Chopra's story is credibly crafted into a riveting screenplay by Neelesh Misra and Kabir Khan.

At first instance, it seems like the love story is barging in the spy-drama. Until you realize that Ek Tha Tiger, largely, is a love story on the backdrop of an espionage thriller and not the other way round. Once we realize that, the romance track is never a hindrance. Rather the Indo-Pak spy couple lends the love story its uniqueness. Nevertheless there is no compromise on the spy setup of the film either. Director Kabir Khan commendably balances the love story and the spy drama, with each element taking precedence at different junctures in the film as per the requirement.

The beauty of the film is that, though the protagonist goes against his establishment for a girl from a rival country, you still root for him. Their integrity towards each other makes you overlook the fact that the two spies went rogue. Thereby Ek Tha Tiger is more of a rooted romance tale over a mechanical spy-thriller. Where it scores above most Indian espionage flicks (including the recent Agent Vinod) is that fact that though it frequently changes geographical boundaries, the narrative never wanders aimlessly.

Unlike most desi actioners where the stunts are often exaggerated, convoluted and commonplace, Ek Tha Tiger boasts of some imaginative action sequences smartly choreographed by Hollywood stunt coordinator Conrad Palmisano. It isn't of the existing variety where a dozen goons go flying in the air by hero's one kick. Kabir Khan strikes a perfect balance between heroism and realism in this department. So the background score or editing patterns don't have to be overblown for the impact. The tram sequence in first half and the freeway chase in the second is sure to invite applause in cinema-halls.

Despite a serious spy setup, the film has a very cool sense of humour. The tongue-in-cheek lines often make you smile even in the most unusual circumstances. Aseem Mishra's cinematography lends the film a grace that the genre demands, as he captures the essence of Ireland, Cuba, Istanbul and other countries with elan.

Salman Khan carries an urbane charm and looks uber-cool dressed in formals. He is resourcefully restrained sans his customary buffoonery. His acting ability is best exploited in this film after a long long time. Katrina Kaif is gorgeous as always and puts in a confident act. Her agility in action sequences adds to her conviction. And more importantly she shares terrific chemistry with Salman Khan, something that was missing in all their earlier pairings. Ranvir Shorey as Salman's associate makes for a good supporting cast. Girish Karnad and Gavie Chahal lend decent support.

Ek Tha Tiger, by far, is Salman Khan's most entertaining and accomplished works in recent times. Hope he takes the correct cues from this film and stays away from mediocrity henceforth.

Salman's Ek Tha Tiger smashes Agneepath collection at Box Office

Hrithik Roshan's Agneepath, which was released on Republic day, January 26, 2012, has shattered several previous records and become the highest grosser movie of the year. Now, Salman Khan's latest film Ek Tha Tiger, which has already beaten its first day collection, has smashed its first weekend collection in just four days. With one day is left to complete its first weekend, it has already set new bench mark.

Agneepath had collected Rs 23 crore nett at the domestic Box Office on the first day. Ek Tha Tiger, which got a mind-blowing response, has broken this record with its collection crossing Rs 32.92 on the opening day. But like Agneepath, Salman-Katrina starrer too witnessed a big downfall in its business on the following days.

The collections of Ek Tha Tiger fell down by more than 50% on Thursday with its two day collection reaching Rs 14.5 crore. Its business continued to fall on Friday too. It added Rs 12.90 crores to its three day total Rs 60.35 crores nett. Trade experts expected it to beat the weekend collection of Agneepath in just three days, but it could not.

Ek Tha Tiger had an average response in morning and matinee shows on Saturday. But the movie witnessed a big jump in its business in the afternoon and evening shows. As per early trends, the movie has collected nearly Rs 20 crores at the Box Office taking its four day collection to Rs 80 crore nett.

However, Agneepath had collected Rs 67.5 crores nett at the Indian Box Office in the four day extended weekend. Ek Tha Tiger has crossed this mark on Saturday. It is expected to do better collection on Sunday. If it does, the movie would cross Rs 100 crore mark in the five-day extended first weekend.

Ek Tha Tiger collections flop Ravi Teja's DCM

Telugu film Devudu Chesina Manushulu opened to a negative response. The Ravi Teja-starrer had tough competition from the likes of Salman Khan's Ek Tha Tiger and Allu Arjun's Julayi. However, the Puri Jagannath directed film has collected 5.5 crores on its opening day. Sources say that film has hit 600 cinemas, including 563 screens in India, 29 screens in USA and 8 screens in UAE.

Salman Khan's Ek Tha Tiger also released on August 15 but the film opened to a pretty good feedback and the movie's collections has set a new record by registering around 32.92 crores (net) on the first day in all 3300 screens in India.

Salman's Ek Tha Tiger collections were not surprising since the film was occupying maximum number of screens and theaters across all centers. Ek Tha Tiger's one day collections has surpassed the previous best of Agneepath, which collected around 22 crores.

Ek Tha Tiger Creates 1st Weekend Box Office Record

Ek Tha Tiger made 12.80 Crores on it's 1st Friday at the box office. After opening to a humongous 32.92 Crores and grossing 14.55 Crores on it's 2nd Day, Ek Tha Tiger looks pretty steady with 60.27 Crores in it's pocket.

Salman Khan And Katrina Kaif In Ek Tha Tiger Movie Stills

The movie might have seen a steady fall in it's last 2 Days but one can sure reason out working days to be not so huge grossing days. However, Ek Tha Tiger has created a new record at the Indian Box Office. In it's 1st weekend (i.e. 1st 3 days run) it has grossed about 60.27 Crores which is the highest ever in Indian history. Post Monday when the fasting season of Ramadan gets over, there is no saying what collections will the movie make.

Salman Khan indeed is rewriting history with Ek Tha Tiger. One can't but help wonder what other records are to be broken soon.
