Sure there were examples here and there. In theory right, there were a few roles.

But compare the majority. Compare the majority of roles in 90s to the majority of roles today, and come on, girls get a much better deal today, and you know it 😆
The clothes, the styling of the 90s, the acting, I mean, bollywood has grown leaps and bounds and so have scripts, budgets, and the entire look.
Majority of roles for women in the 90s were centered aroudn being arm candy to the males. And yes, while we had to deal wtih our share of htat with Katrina Kaif, lets not forget the entire list I mentioned where overall, women get roles of characters that are STRONG, have SHADES, are dynamic independent women, who have a life other than just loving and shedding tears.
Women characters have evolved, and how!

It's been 10+ years since the 90's ended. Of course the WAY the industry works has to grow. It would be disturbing if it does not.
Let's face it, movies that work now wouldn't work back then and movies that worked back then wouldn't work now because audience perception has CHANGED. We also have grown up, we like different things. I can't imagine a Kaminey/Omkara working back then and I can't imagine a HAHK working in today's times. Similarly, some films from the 2000's onwards will NOT work in 10 years from now...we might fail to grasp what was so great about them in 10 years.
And what I'm also talking about is that if we're going to compare their roles, then let's compare the actresses also. The actresses back then knew how to act. 90% of today's wouldn't know what acting was if it stared at them in the face. Given a chance, the 90's actresses can also kick ass today. Let's not go on hits and flops here..because I'll be damned if hit and flop = quality of acting.
Dynamic independent women. You have to think about what society was like back then. What was expected from women and what is expected now. Films end up being a reflection of society only.
In the 1990's we had a Simran agreeing to get married to a COMPLETE stranger because her father said so. You'll be hard-pressed to find such a girl in today's times. Today we have a woman who gets married and leaves her husband within hours because she's in love with her ex. A lot of people accepted that even if a lot were like W*F. In the 90's, people would have unanimously laughed at such a girl...saying she's out of her mind.
As time goes on, definition of strong changes also. A general example here: back then women were considered strong for being housewives and handling the home well..now we tend to look down upon a woman that is a housewive.

I feel there's no better thread than this to quote:

"Be the change you want to see in this world"

OR else STFU and go on with what you do. Why be part of something you're not proud of? If tomorrow Sonam/Deepika's/Anushka's generation went ahead and did 100 cr movies with the Khans to be the "top" actress, it is dismissed because Ms.Kapoor had a starkling realization that those films are not worthy?

Can I say something regarding Kareena without any offence meant to her fans? I notice that many times some of you guys like to portray her as a ditzy young girl and term her W*F statements as endearing, as if she's one of your loudmouth child who likes to blurt out things. Her potential is talked about constantly as if she is a kid to needs to be pushed in the right direction. The thing is, nature of people hardly change, especially in the span of time she was promoting RA.one and Bodyguard. Did Kareena have an out of body experience to change her tunes so dramatically? It's hard for me to find anything "cute" about a 30 something year old WOMAN acting that dumb. Am I the only one who who is not getting it? 🤪

No I totally co-sign this. I agree, there is nothing cute or endearing about GROWN WOMEN such as Kareena.

no offence taken firstly 😃
and secondly...she has always iterated over and over again tht she was part of those 100 crore films for the money and the popularity...i dunt see anywhere where she is dissing them...she ackowledges the fact that it is equally important for actresses to do the potboilers, along with the new age cinema because potboilers, no matter how bad they are, give her the hits, the popularity and the BO status required to sustain in the industry and get people to care, so tht when she does do something unconventional, she has the power to sell it...if not, she will be in the same state she was 5 years ago..with her chameli's and omkaras fetching her critical acclaim, but people constantly terming her as a flop actress...
and as for how people percieve her, well thts upto each individual...i dunt think tht needs to be questioned or mocked...because if the "fans" share tht perception, therz also a group of people who share the perception of her being a complete B****...none of us know how much truth there is to each of these scenarios...people will believe wht they want to believe at the end of the day...therz bias on both sides.

This year we have:
Rani's Aiyya
Kareena's Heroine
Rani and Kareena in Talaash
Kareena in Agent Vinod - Pakistani Spy
Priyanka in Don 2 - Cop
Priyanka in Barfi
Well well, turns out that when you automatically dont dismiss Kareena because she's Kareena and actually think about what she says, she has a point.
😆

Why are these being counted as part of the 2000s list? They fall in the post-2010 group.

90s = 1990-1999

2000s = 2000-2009

Also, I don't think you should include Priyanka's role in Don 2. By no stretch of imagination was hers a "strong female" role. Just because the role description was that of a cop doesn't automatically make it a strong one.

I think that's clearly Saif talking through Kareena. From what I have heard from him in various interviews, he is not very proud of his work in the 90s. In fact he seems quite ashamed of it even though he has nothing to be ashamed of if you ask me. I think that has rubbed off on Kareena.

Wait, I dont think people realize that Kareena never hailed her work in Ra.One OR Bodyguard as something to be proud of, ever.
She has BEEN saying of Ra.One from day 1, yes BEFORE RELEASE that Shahrukh promised her two hit songs.
And for Bodyguard, she has been maintaining that who woudl say no to Salman after Dabangg and atleast she had somewhat a role relative to what most women have in his films.
She got 2 100 crores, yes, and the reporter asked, her, does that mean you're the hero among women and she denied it.
Did she put her films down? No
But she certainly is FULLY aware of the fact that all she wanted from those films is the hit status, that is HIT. And so even if she got 100 crores out of it, it does NOT mean she's on par with the heroes.
She is proud of her 100 crores, but she also knows that those films dont belong to her.
At the same time, she never FULLY relied on JUST those films. WHILE signing up for Ra.One and Bodyguard, the same girl also signed up for Talaash, EMAET, and Agent Vinod, so she balanced it out. SO even during the phase where she chased the 100 crore films, she had roles that required acting on the side. So really, she's not changing up any strategy or anything around.
I think it would be best to first watch the entire video before picking out certain parts.
That was a summary written by ME guys! With two points taken from the TOI summary.
And its not even in order of what she was saying. Thats why I've provided a link underneath for people who actually wanna watch everything she's said and in what context.
