DG- Perhaps, yes the 90's actresses didn't have that kind of scope to prove their versatility like today's heroines do. But I don't think their roles were nonexistant either, you know? Manisha Koirala and Tabu's films definitely had a LOT of scope for them.
TWM, BBB, and MBKD may have been strong kickass roles that women in BW are getting now, but then the likes of DDLJ, KKHH, Raja Hindustani, Rangeela, Lamhe, Chalbaaz, etc were on par also in the 90's..and dare I say it, performed better. I personally am not fond of Kangana's performance in TWM. She was too OTT for me. And MBKD's 5 mins were torture enough 😆 Anushka though was awesome in BBB..
Even if today's heroines are getting "good roles," it's not like a lot of them are doing justice to them..like Sonam, Deepika, Katrina. Put any 90's actress in their roles, and they will deliver a performance at least 10 times better. So in a way, they shone even in their smaller roles with less scope..
Actually now that I'm thinking about 90's films..it wasn't ALL that horrible for actresses.

Sure there were examples here and there. In theory right, there were a few roles.
But compare the majority. Compare the majority of roles in 90s to the majority of roles today, and come on, girls get a much better deal today, and you know it 😆
The clothes, the styling of the 90s, the acting, I mean, bollywood has grown leaps and bounds and so have scripts, budgets, and the entire look.
Majority of roles for women in the 90s were centered aroudn being arm candy to the males. And yes, while we had to deal wtih our share of htat with Katrina Kaif, lets not forget the entire list I mentioned where overall, women get roles of characters that are STRONG, have SHADES, are dynamic independent women, who have a life other than just loving and shedding tears.
Women characters have evolved, and how!

Well said.

lol, I don't know why desigirl and nkapoor are going back & forth over the post 2000 roles actresses have gotten vs the roles actresses have gotten during the 90s...because Kareena brought up the film Dev D like 3 times to differentiate the 90s from the 2000s. She was comparing the difference in cinema of then & now..obviously before anyone starts criticizing the roles actresses used to get then, in the 90s..they must understand that cinema was totally different then in bollywood. Like I mentioned in my earlier post, certain films that work today would NOT have worked then because that's not what bollywood was about at that time. Everything changes after time, & yes that includes cinema..not sure why some people aren't comprehending that.

& like you mentioned, if we really are going to compare the type of roles actresses get today..then why not compare the actresses who portray these roles? 75% of them don't even know the ABCDs to acting and are at the top of the competition.

& of course Kareena is also going to seem biased of the films created during the 2000s - because SHE began 2000 onwards...so she's just going to be oh yeahh, 2000s..thats when bollywood arrived.

And yet Kareena's favorite film is DDLJ, so go figure 😉
Ok Starstruckk, even if she WAS comparing cinema in general from 90s to today, doesnt that effect the actors present during that era?

If the cinema itself is limited, donest have dimension, doesnt have the scripts that give the scope for something substantial, how can actresses be expected to have had better opportunities back then compared to the girls today?

@ bold: of course it does..but that doesn't just limit you to actresses, but actors also & everything else that comes with the film. Kareena began talking generally..the interviewer began talking generally & I found it a bit ridiculous how they both degraded 90s just like that..it was in a broad sense like heyyy, now we make exciting cinema..back then it was just..boring?

Didn't Kareena also mention how she doesn't feel we're "there" yet which is why a film like Bodyguard which didn't have a strong script still made it so big today..so is she indirectly trying to say we should only produce stuff that's relevant to her times? I just found that entire conversation baffling.

Not to mention her bringing up of David Dhawan films to prove her point. Like I said..cinema changes over time..what works today may not work tomorrow & things just get more advanced & technical with time.

Yes I agree with your points.
I suppose I just interpret her statements differently.
I just thought she was going back and forth. Kinda like to say, yes times are changign but then...are they?
