I'm not saying he doesn't believe in God, just that his concept of God and his practices puts him outside the folds of Islam. The confusion here, I think, is that you see God as one and the same in every religion, just different names, but it doesn't quite work like that in Islam, you have to believe that there is no God but Allah, and if you worship any other deity or celebrate festivals of other religions, you are committing major shirk, and this makes you an "unbeliever" in the Islamic sense.

Again, this is not my opinion, it's what the religion actually says.

Since we're going this route...

It's "There is no God but God." Allah is a word meaning God, not a name for/of God, despite it sort of being used more akin to a name by many Muslims and people trying to put down Islam (err..some evangelist Christians for example) alike.

And perhaps I should list the different sects in Islam that some other sects don't regard as Muslims.

But as I said, I'd rather not discuss because it will undoubtedly offend people.

But if I'm celebrating Diwali, does that make me less of a Christian? or a Muslim? I've been to my friend's poojas and I do whatever it is that they're doing, not because I dont believe in my God and not because I'm worshiping Shree Ganesha but merely out of respect for my friend and her family. Belief is in the heart, not in the action is all I'm trying to say. If one believes in Lord Ganesha and in Allah at the same time, then yes, its contradictory. But just because a person fasts for Shivraatri because everyone else is doing so, then I dont think they're any less of a Muslim.

if some one think, some religion is above all or respecting other religion or joining other religios function is a sin, those people also should relaize it cant be. Because a religion means peace and love. So if some religion justyfy such things, killings etc, there is a 1000% possibility that religion or teachings of god being misunderstood by humans with the propagation of that religion.Simple...

Every religion spread peace, if not its the fault of current leaders of certain religions who have agendas.

I join every function if I get invited to..whats wrong in that? Then No one cant judge other's religious respects or activities. People should follow goodness in heart, thats what religion is..not other things.

well I have heard that christians and islamic people are not suppose to believe in any other religion/god except theirs, that is quite annoying! but who are we to judge if someone fits in to their religion or not?, who are we to do so? we are living in 21st century, and we are free to believe whatever we want to, if one wants to believe in more then one religion, there is no rule against it, one cannot be termed non-islamic just because they believe in a different religion too! if the Islamic people do not believe Salman/Shahrukh are muslim then it is their loss! a religion is about acceptance, not segregation, according to me

If you want to go into religious discussions, that's fine with me. I can discuss plenty and argue plenty. And I'm not saying this in bitchy or testy way. But not everyone will be able to handle the criticisms or opinions.

I guess that 'unfavourable' question points back to me. To me, religion isn't a touchy subject and I was genuinely curious. I don't see the harm in that.

Seriously?

People die everyday in the name of religion and you don't consider it a sensitive topic?

You've been living under a rock or something for the past, Oh I don't know, since the invention of religion.

I am surprised we are debating the religious beliefs of a movie star. Movie stars treat religion the same way politicians in India treat it-as a means of garnering brownie points with their fans of the respective religion.
