Salman's mother converted only on paper, as in those days, you couldn't get married to a Muslim without conversion. She always maintained her religion though, there are baby pics of Salman around in which his mother is holding him, and wearing a mangalsutra. etc.

but isn't salma a muslim name? seems like the poor lady's name got changed after marriage! :(

I dont think its neccessary to convert for inter-religious marriages. The Indian law allows it though I think as per Muslim personal laws conversion is neccessary. Thats why many people convert for marriage but dont change their names officially.

Who cares???...religion is too 20th century. Its more important to be spiritual than religious. Religion is man made.

Regardless of all this, everybody on the sub-continent is a Hindu. Conversion happened in the 19th century but at the end of the day everybody's roots trace back to Hinduism.

Name changing post-marriage even certain communities among Maharashtrians do it as a ritual and they continue calling the new bride with the new name... Its not that common now but my grandmother said it was quite prevalent during her times... I am glad it's not that prevalent now...

Technically he's not a Muslim. Being born to Muslim parents doesn't make someone Muslim. He doesn't seem to be someone who follows the Islamic way- I don't know if he prays at home or fasts during Ramadan, but I doubt it. You certainly are not a Muslim if you're drinking and sleeping around.

It's better to say that culturally, one side of his family has a Muslim background. But he is not Muslim as far as I can see.

And what did he fast on, scotch ya vodka?

From an Islamic point of view, what your ancestors were doing doesn't matter. You either believe in one God or idolatry or whatever else your belief is. Most of the prophets were born to non-Muslims but were Muslims themselves. So you can't say everyone in India is Hindu. Everyone is responsible for their beliefs, not their ancestors' beliefs. It's kind of hard to explain without explaining the religion.

Eh what's the problem? Let him fast if he wants to.

Well yes, "Hindu" was originally a geographical term referring to the inhabitants of the subcontinent (across the river Indus) in general. So indeed, everyone here is a Hindu. 😉
